Tom works at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels as an adult education instructor providing English instruction to classes or individual students.

As an ESL teacher, developing a curriculum he takes an overall approach to English study that focuses on a specific aspect of language use, such as life skills, literacy, or vocational and workplace English competencies. Both approaches involve teaching his students basic English skills, such as listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The Pedagogical Foundations Of EnglishCentral

I was originally born in Cincinnati, Ohio in a large family (youngest of nine kids), and we all attended Catholic schools... this is where I started learning Spanish. I have studied it (and English Literature) for many years, then eventually won a scholarship to study/travel in Mexico for six months. I returned from Mexico fluent, graduated from college with honors in language and Humanities, then decided to go live in Washington, DC to use that language. I got into corporate training, working 10 years at Fannie Mae as I traveled to 38 of the 50 states to help them train banks on their financial systems. I later began working in healthcare, and got certified as an interpreter AND as an Instructional Designer. If you are looking for a Spanish teacher look no further! Naomi is a very skilled and phenomenal teacher. I have taken her class for the last 10 months and I truly can see the progress I have made with her teaching style. She not only has set lessons from the book, but she will bring real-world examples such as food, newspapers, and music! I recently traveled to the Dominican Republic and I was amazed at how easily I was able to hold a conversation. The people there let me know that my Spanish was very good. It was definitely a compliment for me. I believe that a student is only as good as their teacher. Naomi is the right teacher!

We start first with easy phrases, getting to know a person, greetings. We then look at how to ask directions, and learn about ordering food in a restaurant. A large part of what I teach is through dialogue, and to supplement it I have discovered some great workbooks. We work in song, drawing and movement, even with older people, not just children. I can also assist with homework from a person's school, if they are a student.

Kate Lanxner, was a beloved member of our congregation and served as our UUG Youth Director from September 2013 (if my memory serves me well) until June 2016. We were so sad that she had to return back to the U.S and it was a huge loss to our group. The children ADORED her as did everyone on the UUG Steering Committee who appreciated her commitment, creativity, hard work and tremendous service to our community.

In addition to her official position as UUG Youth Director, Kate was instrumental behind the scenes with the adult programming and community building, contributing to the steering committee with valuable ideas, input, and efforts to promote us in the social media, bringing in important speakers and contacts, and always lending a tried and true hand. She single-handedly planned and presented a very much appreciated service in January 2016 entitled: "An Active Peace for 2016: Profile of James Twyman, Peace Troubadour (and other peacemakers)," including a well-received lecture, music, readings, and audience participation. She was a stalwart support and cheerleader for our group and she left a large gap in our community. But we take heart in what she embedded in our group -- a standard of excellence for our children's edification and enjoyment that we will try to replicate in the future. She trained an up-and-coming youth leader, an adolescent who blossomed under Kate’s tutelage. Kate brought into our fellowship a wonderful energy, love, creativity, connectivity, artfulness, and magic which should enrich the environment of any employer lucky enough to enlist her aid and services. She was entrusted with our children’s welfare, with access to buildings and equipment, and was the most reliable and delightful person imaginable. She worked sometimes under very uncertain conditions when we did not know who the participants would be and under frequently and unexpectedly changing conditions, and she was always an excellent problem solver and adapted to the prevalent situation with grace and joy. The entire UUG Steering Committee wholeheartedly endorses her for any work involving children and/or adult learning creativity, art and discovery.

Rebecca is a very good tutor. She is a very communicative and friendly person. Her lessons productive and interesting. She was always ready to support a conversion and stayed calm about my mistakes :) We practiced new words, expressions and idioms, she helped me to correct my pronunciation and grammar. After our classes I became more confident about my English, especially speaking skills. She makes student very comfortable during the class. However, I highly recommend her as an English tutor!

I have more than eight years of language teaching experience. I have learned five languages over the years in China and overseas. I started tutoring Chinese students (age 8-16) English and Chinese when I was 19 and I founded my first summer camp in China when I was 20. Students who had registered for my summer camp increased from 25 in 2010 to 86 in 2016. I've gained very valuable skills and perspectives in teaching, not just as a teacher, but also as a student--students are my teachers too--I've learned there are always places that I can improve and better help them learn languages. Students' "needs" and "wants" are prioritized. It helps students achieve their goals while combined with students' "lacks" in lesson planning. Students should get involved in the lesson planning process.

Interest is the best teacher. When I taught non-nati
ve Chinese speakers (in China, South Korea and the U.S) Chinese, it seemed it stimulated their curiosity and interest to learn Chinese when cultural elements were introduced--such as characters' origin and visualization, historical contexts and cultural traditions. I hope that approach can also bring you an enjoyable experience learning a new language!

To help you be able to use Chinese, our language learning is mainly through interactive and communicative approaches. Talk! Talk! Talk! Please don't be shy. It's okay to make mistakes. Learning from mistakes is also a very effective way to learn a new language. We can make more contextualized dialogues based on whatever textbook you are using now. Or we can produce functional conversation based on everyday topics that you are interested. Lesson plans are customized and they can be flexible.

I went to Miss Xue's summer camp and learned English from her for two years. She was very nice and patient. The knowledge and skills that she told us were very helpful. My English grade increased from 60s to 80s. I really appreciated with her help.
