Some people might fare better with this instructor. More chatting than instructing. Usually telling stories trying to sell himself and talk about how great he is. Delusional ideas about your relationship. Accusatory. Takes things personally. Burns bridges. Claims to be a vocal therapist but doesn't do any vocal therapy. Can provide bad advice and medical information.

This was my first piano lesson in 50 years. It was everything I hoped it would be... intellectual, fun, relaxed... and it filled me with hope that I could finally make something out of a musical instrument I left in the dust so many years ago. Jimi is wonderful to talk with and work with. This was beyond my expectations.

I’m 80 years old and play sax in a Senior band. I signed up for several lessons with Jimi Z. to improve my tone and breathing. I think Jimi did a great job with me, and I recommend Jimi for sax lessons. Dan Ginsberg

I've graced the stages of some of NYC's most beloved theatres including; The National Black Theatre, The Public Theatre, 13th Street Rep, and HERE Arts Center. I can be seen in a number of films, commercials, and music videos alongside the likes of Shaquille O’Neal. I’ve performed worldwide in places like Athens, GR. I have worked with world-famous directors like Broadway's Kenny Leon and Dennis Hilton-Reid, and received training from some of the world's top acting institutions (The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, CalArts). I have directed regionally and in New York, I teach regularly with The Family Repertory Company (Where I have served as a resident actor and director since 2016), and have students spanning the globe! I strive to acquire as much knowledge about this craft as is possible and to share that gift with the world. A wise man once told me, “The only reason to act is that it hurts too much not to.”

After a long time of searching for an acting coach, I finally met Darius.

His coaching approach is very unique and truly changed my career and skill as an actor. He has a depth of knowledge and is very caring.

I highly recommend Darius.

Taking classes with Darius was tons of fun. Helped me through a few problems with a monologue I needed to learn and helped add another layer to it that I didn't even think of. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes as it'll help you reach into whatever piece you're working on and draw out something new for your character work and overall understanding of the play/film/show. if you're wondering whether you should do it or not, I say, take the class! In the long run, you'll be grateful for the help.

Darius is a great teacher. Not only does he care about his students, but his attention to every detail is spot on. A true theatre artist in every respect of the term, Darius is just as talented as a performer and playwright. Take class from him before he becomes the next Lee Strasberg and the waiting list is eons long

"Alex was my Movement and Voice/Speech instructor in my graduate programme. I had done my undergrad in acting overseas and then moved to LA to complete my MFA in Acting. In my undergrad programme, I absolutely detested every Tuesday and Friday when we had Movement and Voice...but all that changed when Alex became my teacher for these subjects. Suddenly these were my favourite subjects. She made me actually look forward to going to class at 9am. I looked forward to what I was going to learn next from her.

She was so attentive to ALL her students, no matter your level. She always found time to work with you in whatever you were struggling with. She really truly cared about us. It was unlike anything I'd experienced with any other teacher I'd have ever. At one point, I was victim to some intimidation from another student in my class. Alex was the first person I confided in and she guided me through what I should do and how I should handle it, she was completely there for me, even allowing me to call her past 10pm to calm me down after one particularly bad encounter with said student.

Her lessons are prepared, structured and completely engaging. Somehow she is able to detect exactly what you personally need to work on and makes sure you are offered the most appropriate advice that best suits your personal needs. I can't even quite express how much I have learnt from her in the short four months that she was my teacher. She has exposed me to so many different techniques and exercises which, through her guidance, afforded me the opportunity to choose what worked for me.

If there is one thing that you cannot deny about Alex, she genuinely cares about her students, sometime to the detriment of her own life. She is an extraordinary teacher and an even more exceptional woman.

As cliche as this is, she inspires me to not only be a better actor, but to just be a better person."

"Exceptional! Toya is a working artist herself, so she is beyond knowledgeable about acting and voice. A lot of my daughter’s lessons ran longer than the time I paid, which is a rare, and very generous thing. Toya makes sure you get what you pay for and more. She’s so passionate about helping talent find their way in the arts. She is equally great at helping parents who know nothing about the arts, like me, learn the best way to support our kids in the arts, which is just incredible. She is beyond talented, very professional, and an absolute inspiration to all those she teaches. My daughter started out with no experience, and learned it all from Toya. She is now working as a professional actor thanks to Toya! My family and I will get to see my daughter in a major film in theatres! By far the best acting/vocal instructor on TakeLessons or anywhere else, hands down."

How to Read & Understand Stage Directions

If you’ve ever been in a play or musical you will be familiar with the term ‘stage directions’. For those who don’t know, stage directions are,  “an instruction in the text of a play, especially one indicating the movement, position, or tone of an actor.” Stage directions can also be instructions for the director, such as the way the stage should be lit or what kind of sound effect could be used.  Stage directions can also tell an actor how to deliver a line— pace of speech, emot …

4 Drama Games for Method Acting

If you’re interested in the wonderful world of acting, you’ll want to eventually familiarize yourself with the concept of method acting. But what is method acting exactly? It is an acting technique that allows the actor to associate with the character on an emotional level. This often involves the actor fully identifying with the character, feeling, expressing, and evoking thoughts and emotions that resonate with the character’s role. Essentially, the actor “becomes” the character. …
