I teach Acting through method, Meisner, Stanislavski, and I help write and create a repertoire appropriate for the actor or find monologues and scripts easier for the actor to study.

About Ali
Ali has had music in her life since she was in the crib. She has performed professionally in the musical theatre world and she has studied in several universities for Musical Theater, Jazz, Pop, Blues, and R&B. Since the age of sixteen, she has been selected to sing as a guest soloist for venues such as Spivey Hall, Georgia World Congress Center, and Georgia Tech Hotel Conference Center. Ali has also sung for many movies and recordings, and recently recorded a demo for David Foster, Barbra Streisand, and Andrea Bocelli and recently toured as a pianist for "The Women of Ireland." Ali is also known for playing piano. She received her minor in Piano Performance within a year at Shorter College under Helen Ramsaur. She has been playing since she was five years old and has accompanied many people and musical productions.

Linda Eder, Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Lena Horne, Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Billie Holliday, and Lara Fabian, Barbra Streisand

*** Lesson Details ***
Ali loves to share her passion of music to the world and especially through her students. She loves to share new ideas and nuances along with the basics and fundamentals of technique. After a few months, not only will her students have fun, but they will learn how to be a better person and musician.

I believe, wholeheartedly, that with the right teaching and encouragement, anyone can learn to become an actor. Both children and adult beginners will have a great time playing acting "games", (i.e. exercises) that encourage creativity and freedom of artistic expression.

About Heather M.
More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio, in the World Golf Village area, and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across
the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals.

Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.
The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I recently (2014) studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.
Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, and monologue and audition coaching. Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an acoustic guitar to bring to both voice and guitar lessons. I expect my piano students to have a piano, an organ or a keyboard.

***Home Studio Equipment***
In my home studio, my students will have access to an acoustic guitar, an electronic keyboard, an acoustic piano and PC audio recording.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical, country, pop and musical theater singing, classical and pop/rock/chordal style piano, and sightreading, including solfege syllables. I enjoy using Estelle Liebling as my voice method and Hanon for piano technique. My education includes coursework in jazz and pop theory and songwriting from both Westminster Choir College and the Berklee College. Teaching special needs individuals is also one of my specialties, and one that I highly enjoy. I've been trained in Meisner technique, and have experience in both theater acting and musical theater.

whether you're just starting out, getting back to an old high school passion or wanting to take class regularly to continue to grow as a working professional, we will create a program together to discover more of, reinvigorate and inspire you.

About J Marcus
[My studio is not set up for video recording/playback and therefore not appropriate for film/television students.]

Stage actors and acting students: are you preparing for an important audition? I can help you understand your material better and connect to the work in a personal, unique way that will help you stand out as a candidate.

Business professionals: is that speech you have to give, or presentation you have to make feeling a little too daunting? We'll work on that together drawing on experience both in the corporate world and on stage to ensure that your message comes across loud and clear.

I have directed over 40 projects for the stage in San Diego and coached students who have been accepted at NYU's Tisch School, financial advisors preparing to wow their clients and motivational speakers requiring a little confidence
building, some relaxation techniques and even some personal motivation of their own before addressing huge audiences of eager acolytes.

I continue to work as an actor on stage and in television, as a playwright and as personal coach.

Some testimonials:
"[Mark] has been one of the most positive influences on my playwriting career and in my life in general. He has been wonderfully generous both to me and to a horde of other young (and established) theater artists in sharing his knowledge and talent." Jim Knable, playwright

"Of all the directors who have staged plays for me since 1986, none has contributed so consistently as [Mark] to the quality and growth of the Playwrights Project . . . . He is a caring and reliable colleague, a principled man who believes deeply in the importance of theatre in a civilized world." Deborah Salzer, Founding Director

*** Lesson Details ***
If you've got an AUDITION coming up for a stage play - I can help you with PREPARATION by giving detailed feedback on what you've already accomplished, suggest plays to choose a monologue from, and polish your audition to get you the role in as few as two one-hour sessions.

For students looking for PERSONAL ONGOING COACHING:
Beginning stage actors will explore how to work in your voice and your body. You will learn to use relaxation and breathing techniques, along with exercises in both memory and sensory exploration.

Experienced stage actors will work in greater detail and depth to find new ways to move you on to the next level.

You will select and prepare audition material and explore those parts of you that can best bring the character to life.

With consent from your director, stage actors preparing roles can get that extra time and feedback you want.

Excited to teach all levels and skill sets.

About Nicholas
I have been an actor for more the 35 years having worked Off-Broadway and Regionally.

I've taught acting for 18 years privately as well as at Brooklyn College, St Frances College, Marymount Manhattan College, and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

"Nicholas is patient, insightful, friendly, and gets
results. After working with Nicholas, I felt great
about my auditions, got two callbacks, and landed
a touring job.
I would recommend him to any actor."

I am the Producing Artistic Director of the Hudson Warehouse and have been since its inception in 2004. Known as "The Other Free Shakespeare in the Park," we produce free classical theater in Riverside Park during the summer months and we hav
e an indoor season during the winter months as well.

"Mr. Martin-Smith has been my director, coach and
mentor in productions and the classroom. His patience,
insight and his passion excites students, and makes
them feel safe and supported enough to take risks."

*** Teaching Methods ***
I foster a safe, relaxed and engaging environment to explore truthful human behavior on stage.

The objective is 'the truth' to which end there is no one technique. Actors are encouraged to find their own tools and to draw from elements of different practices to discover a technique that works best for them as individuals.

I studied the methods of Constantin Stanislavski for acting with Sergei Pomerov of the Moscow Circus Theater. I am classically trained as well.

I work primarily as a guide to help navigate the way and to interpret ‘the signs.' I teach the lesson in the moment and address the challenges of both the beginner and the experienced actor.

***Classical Work***
My basic approach to classical work focuses primarily on the connection of the breath with the feeling on the word.

This is the foundation on which you can then build. From the ‘words’ to the ‘thoughts’ to entire ‘passages’ of text, as you work and explore, the richness of the playwright’s words comes to life. Your own unique emotional life is allowed to come through the text and you are able to fully embody the role.

*** Teaching Levels and Focuses ***
*Beginning Actors
-Work With Classical Text.
-Vocal Work.
-"Moment to Moment" Work.
-"Sense Memory" Work.

*Experienced Actors
-In depth Classical Text Analysis.
-Connecting to the Text.
-Audition Technique
-Monologue Coaching

I was always afraid I couldn't learn Shakespeare, but Nicholas explained the intent on the word, the intent on the line. Soon, I was so caught up in the meaning of the lines and the story I was telling in that moment that I was able to engage in the role, smoothly, without worrying that I was performing Shakespeare. He broke it down so I could understand it, and then feel confident doing it. Highly recommend!

Nicholas knows Shakespeare and classical work. He really works with the text and helps an actor really understand the emotions in the scene, through the text. I've gotten so much out of his teaching and so have many of my friends. If you have an audition or play coming up, he's the one to get you ready for it! My friend nailed his audition, got the gig, all through his work with Nicholas. I've learned so much as an actor from Nicholas.

I have taught and directed for 30 years in NY and DC. From lesson 1, students engage with a dynamic approach to acting through Meisner-based improv. During the 1st 12 weeks, we go from basic truthful acting to dynamic scene work, followed by 12 weeks of in-depth scene study, then extensive character training and in-depth film and audition technique. My students are successful in film, theater, commercials and TV in DC, NY and LA.

About Robert
I have taught acting for over 30 years based in the Meisner Technique, and I write and direct my own plays and films. I have years of experience as an actor, jazz saxophone player, singer and poet, as well as a philosophy degree, which I bring to my understanding of acting. I use this rich background to focus on the creativity, intelligence and improvisational abilities of each student in their acting process. I know what it takes to walk into any acting situation ready to play the role. My goal is to create actors who enjoy their work and can act skillfully in film, theater, tv and auditions. I emphasize character work in the program, an important and often neglected part of the acting process. I have cast my advanced students in my original projects in the DC area, and most recently directed my original play, "The Big A: Scenes fro
m a Vanishing Landscape" for the 2014 DC Fringe Festival. I have directed two films: "Adams Morgan: The Movie," which premiered at the Avalon Theater in 2010 and was selected and shown as part of the East of the River Festival in DC; and a short film from my original screenplay titled "Crazy" which is currently in the editing phase. My student Mack Leamon is currently appearing in the Arena Stage production of "Raisin in the Sun" and I am very proud of his accomplishment!

This is really a thorough journey into the art and craft of acting at its best. It is engrained in one of the original contributors of acting Michael Chehkov with a contemporary interpretation. It is very difficult to find this kind of a real REAL nature of acting kind of class. True learning experience. It is so specific in its technique and due to the nature of the small class you are given full attention. I took so much away from this class, that will stay with me forever!

For me as an actor, the benefit of a great coach or director has always been that they've helped me reach places in my work I couldn't have achieved on my own. As a coach myself, I'm most thrilled by those small (or monumental!) breakthroughs that my students and I discover together during the coaching process. The cool thing is that I've found the progress my students make in their craft will often inspire me to new heights in my own. (A bonus to already enriching work)!

Performing with professional repertory companies like ACT Theatre, Book-It Repertory, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, and the Shakespeare Theatre in DC, I've gained personal knowledge of the art, craft, and business of being a working actor, which I will put to work for you, in a personalized one-on-one coaching session, either online or in person.

Here's how I can help.

SCENE WORK AND MONOLOGUES: Whether it's dusting off and refreshing monologues you've performed more times than you can count, or developing pieces or scenes for the first time for an upcoming stage or on-camera audition, we can break the material down togethe
r, work on the clarity of your choices and active objectives, and access your personal connection to the material so you'll be ready and confident with a one-of-a-kind performance that reflects the strengths you bring to acting and the story you want to tell.

SHAKESPEARE: Perhaps the most daunting of styles for a contemporary actor, we'll get down to the nuts and bolts of some of the most challenging (and rewarding) material. The famous soliloquies are famous for a reason and can certainly be intimidating, and more obscure material can seem thick and inaccessible. We'll chip away at the mystique of Shakespeare by digging in to the text and verse, activating the language with specificity, and cultivating your personal take on well-known characters or lesser known material they might not have seen before.

DIALECTS AND ACCENTS: From English to Irish to Southern American and beyond, a well executed dialect can be the edge you need to land (and play) that meaty role. I use a multipronged approach that involves ear training to develop an authentic sound, text analysis for clarity of sound substitutions (IPA Proficient), and exercises that pare away stilted and unnatural speech to cultivate an authentic sounding voice that will be your own.

VOICEOVER: I've been booking voiceover gigs on TV, radio, and the internet for over 10 years with clients like Microsoft, Liberty Mutual, UW Medicine, Tableau, Reno Toyota, and Golden One State Credit Union. I can offer tips and tricks of the trade, as well as techniques that can take your VO submissions to the next level and help you book these lucrative contracts.
