I am interested in helping students struggling with math from basic algebra to calculus. When I was a computer science student, I took about 10 math classes; Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math I and II, Discrete Probability, Statistics and Continuous Probability, and Numeric Method on Digital Computing. I got good grades for all these classes. I enjoyed solving problems in math and often found myself taking the challenges of solving extra credit problems. It would be a very rewarding experience if I am able to share the process of solving math problems with others and help them improve their abilities to solve problems on their own.

About Amber
I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master
Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria). I was awarded scholarship when I attended Cleveland Inctitute of Music and Aspen Music School. My teachers include Jinsook Kim, Donald Walker, Paul Schenly, Gabriel Chodos, Viktor Teuflmayr, Claude Elffere, Anne Epperson, and Vivian Hornik Weilestein.
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. Recently I taught at Half Note Music School in Bellevue, WA and was a pianist at St. Columba's Episcopal Church and United Christian Church in Renton, WA.

For everyone out there that hears the word "Algebra" and runs away, it's time you knew a secret. Algebra can be fun and can be simple. Algebra is really just solving puzzles. Once you found out the easiest way for you to solve jigsaw puzzles, they probably became a lot easier! And notice I said the easiest way for YOU. We don't all solve puzzles in the same way. I solve them best when I do all outside pieces first. My brother solves them best when he finds pieces of the same color or pattern. I even have a friend that solves them by going across in rows. So you see, there are lots of ways to get to the same answer. Same thing for any type of math. Find what works for you and you're set to go! During my Algebra lessons, I focus on helping you discover your easiest way and I use lots of concrete objects.

I've been teaching Algebra over 10 years in my private tutoring practice. I'm pleased that the majority of my students realize a full letter grade improvement (or more).

I like to view algebra the way I view a game: there are simple rules that govern what you can do, and if you know and understand the rules, the game is a whole lot easier, and fun! The same exact thing can be said about Algebra. If algebra seems to be a struggle for you, I can help you identify the basic concepts (i.e. rules) that you need strengthen your knowledge on. I remember what it was like to personally struggle with algebra, and I know the most common pitfalls which make it seem much more difficult than it actually is. Because of this experience, I am quite adept on picking up on my student's tripping up points, and helping them clear up fuzzy understandings of the rules of algebra. I started teaching algebra six years ago when I first started teaching it to myself. Since that time algebra has been the subject I have tutored the most frequently, and I believe I have become quite good at helping students master concepts that were once the most challenging for them.

About Colin
Hello there! My name is Colin and I am a senior biomedical engineering major and undergraduate researcher at UC Berkeley. Additionally, I have been tutoring math, science, and essay writing on college campuses and online since 2014. Math and science are a significant part of my daily life, which is fortunate for me as I am very passionate about both.

As a tutor, my goal is not to impress you with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress you by showing you how easily math and science concepts can come to you when you are presented the material the way *you* need to see and hear it. It's my guarantee to you that I will always strive to communicate the concepts effectively, listen to your questions with patience, and work with your unique way of learning to help you truly understand the material. This takes time, and it takes work
, but the rewards that come from it - high test scores, a strong GPA, and deep satisfaction of really mastering math and science concepts - are worth it many times over.

*Read a little further if you would like to know about my personal story on my journey to becoming a math and science tutor*

Admittedly, I didn't discover my passion for math and science until years after high school. In fact, I was seemingly terrible at both. This, I later found, was mainly due to poor communication and poor presentation of the concepts from my high school teachers. Almost eight years later, a genuine curiosity induced me to seek out YouTube videos on various math and science topics, and upon finding the right videos, where the material was presented effectively, it was actually fun and very satisfying to learn. In fact, I found that the concepts came rather easily to me. It was a night and day difference from my high school experience.

At this point, it was a glaring reality to me that people simply do not learn effectively when they aren't being presented the material in a very clear and interesting manner (for some strange reason, this is especially a problem with physics teachers/professors). For example, understanding *why* acceleration has units of meters per second squared makes those units much easier to memorize than simply knowing "it just does." Knowing *why* the x-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola is -b/2a, and why it's useful to even know how to find the vertex, makes it worlds easier to memorize than being told "it just is." Very few people in the world can learn effectively just by hearing dry, seemingly random information. On the contrary, people tend to learn and remember information they deem valuable. Since this discovery, it has been a goal of mine to help others learn and enjoy math and science the same way I do. I accomplish this by being a clear communicator, and teaching math and science concepts with excitement and demonstrating how this knowledge is valuable.

A drive to teach others is not the only good thing to come from my latent discovery of my passion for STEM. After teaching myself algebra through YouTube videos and various books, I enrolled in community college and placed in trigonometry. After completing my general education with a 4.0, I transferred to UC Berkeley into the biomedical engineering program and the rest, as they say, is history. Amazing things can happen when you are able to learn effectively!

Colin was flexible with my schedule and was readily available if I had additional questions. He broke subject matter down for me and made sure that I had a good understanding of the topic before moving forward.

Most importantly, Colin never made me feel incapable when it came to doing the work.
