Hi I’m Corey, a computer science graduate from UCSD who has a genuine appreciation for the study of math and computer science. I also have a passion for helping students excel in their academic goals. My motivation comes from my own experience, from a poor educational background in grade school to graduating from a highly accredited university. This journey has enabled me to see the detail in how education shapes lives and how a negative experience from it can hold back otherwise great students from achieving extraordinary accomplishments. When this happens, I consider it to be the biggest let down for a student, and even more, an unfortunate loss for society. It's where I get my passion from and it’s what drives me to teach, motivate, and inspire students to pursue STEM or any other academic field.
 
I know from my tutoring experience that every student is not just worthy of academic success but is more than capable of it. It is, however, largely up to the teacher’s ability to guide students to their success, and that’s something I'm proud to say I can do. For me, being a tutor is more than just going over homework problems or helping students prepare for an exam. Instead, it's helping students create a vision for themselves where they can discover their own passion and purpose that excites them to set high goals and encourages them to achieve.

My success as a tutor is centered on providing students with a foundation of first principles, discussing the motivation behind concepts, and showing how they connect to other topics. I see the world of math and computer science as being a map where each topic is like a town where some are big and some are small, but in any case they’re all connected. Thus, as I give the zoomed in details of a topic, I also provide the bigger picture overview, showing how that topic fits into the overall map and how it connects to other topics.

What I like about this approach is that it helps students avoid becoming lost in abstraction, and instead shows them exactly where they’re at in the subject while also equipping them with the finer details. The outcome is that when students understand where they are on this map, they develop a stronger curiosity to learn more. It also helps them apply what they know through a critical thinking lens to solve problems, versus solving by memorization - which is what the point of education is.

Simply put, I'm the tutor you can count on to teach you how to think, problem-solve, and also help guide you to your own educational achievements.

Corey's approach to Mathematics is very refreshing. While my understanding of basic concepts were roughly there, Corey ensured that he understood exactly what I needed improvement on before diving into the more complex nuances of early Calculus. His fresh take on the building blocks allowed me to clearly see the reasonings that make up the study of Calculus.

 I would highly recommend Corey for any subject of learning, and plan to continue leveraging his vast knowledge of many of the courses remaining in my pursuit of a BS in CS.

I have been working with Corey for a few weeks now, and I can safely say he is an excellent Java tutor.  Not only does he show you the answers to your questions, but he shows you the reason that is the answer.  He works with me until I fully understand a concept.  Corey also clearly understands the structure or the "in's and out's" of Java very well; he has shown me things that I probably would not have been taught for another two semesters in college.

Honestly, Corey is the bomb.com. I take him as a Java programming tutor and let me tell yall. he has been able to dumb stuff down for me. the first teacher(my college professor) that I had for java wasn't the teaching type so Corey has really been essential with keeping me up and running during my second course of programming.

Corey went above and beyond during my 1st Java lesson. Very detailed and made sure I understood each step of the process.  I’ll be using Corey for continued help in Java and highly recommend Corey.

Corey is currently tutoring me in Java, a subject I find very painful to learn. It was difficult to understand my professor's method of teaching, since he dove right into syntax without explaining the foundational piece. As a result, I was not retaining any of it. Corey has in-depth knowledge of why Java works and how it works, which is a good launch point to move to actual programming. Recommend him for anyone who, like me, struggles to understand the basics. He also keeps my interest in a way that makes it not so painful - sometimes bordering on enjoyable!

My daughter is high functioning autistic and was struggling with Algebra 1 to the point of nearly failing the class. We tried to work with another tutor but that was unsuccessful due to personality conflict between the tutor and my daughter. Once Corey started tutoring her, with his focus on understanding over memorization, my daughter's grades improved dramatically and she was so much happier. We were extremely happy with Corey's approach to teaching, his work ethic, and his patience and understanding dealing with someone with special needs. We intend to continue lessons with Corey in the fall for the next school year.

Corey helped me in Calculus and is a really great tutor. He doesn't just explain the problems but also the concepts beyond. It really helped me understand the fundamental issues I had with the class. His explanations are really concise and easy to understand.
