*** Lesson Details *** Making music and singing should be fun, and everyone deserves to have a great experience with their instrument for the rest of their lives. I take pride in guiding my students in exploring their potential in a safe, creative and non-judgmental environment. My students will learn to develop courage and confidence, grow their ears and appreciation for music in all its forms, and expand their range, power and musical skills.
Your lessons will be tailored according to your goals, dreams and personal motivation. I will offer you resources and show you how to use research as way to become independent when preparing your lessons, auditions and performances. If you are an aspiring guitarist/songwriter, I will teach you the basics of playing the guitar and offer you fun techniques to build those callouses, play rhythmically with confidence and coordinate your playing with your singing.
Whether you are completely inexperienced, naturally gifted, shy, ambitious about a professional career or just looking for an outlet that feels good, I am here to help you. You will not only learn technical skills and many tricks for beating stage fright and crafting a performance, but you will also learn to share your unique personality on stage, and learn to perform with feeling, heart and honesty.
Everyone has something beautiful and wonderful to offer the world and I look forward to meeting you and discovering your special voice and sound!
*** Studio Equipment *** My lessons are conducted in my home in an open living room area. I have a keyboard and a guitar. You must bring your own guitar (an acoustic or acoustic electric - sorry, I do not teach lessons with electric guitars) and, if you have "accompaniment" karaoke CDs (or mp3 on your phone or laptop) and/or sheet music that you have been working with, I encourage you to bring those.
*** Travel Equipment *** Home lessons are negotiable and I would bring a guitar and/or a percussive instrument. Your home must have a room where lessons can be conducted free from distraction (incl. pets and siblings) and have enough space for exercises and instruments. It must also be in-view of the family and have an open. Group lessons are negotiable. :-)
*** Specialties *** I specialize in singing, songwriting, voice, speech and acting. I also teach beginning lessons in guitar and piano. Other specializations: International Phonetic Alphabet, Accent Reduction, Musical Theatre, Classical Theatre (Shakespeare, Greeks), Movement Theatre (Mime, Period Movement, Stage Combat), Singing Styles (Jazz, Pop, Rock, Classical, Gospel, Musical Theatre, Sacred Chant).
I help speakers develop powerful, authentic voices by combining knowledge of their instrument, vocal health practices and helping them develop the technique to easily sustain their sound. Together, we'll create your personalized 'toolkit' of exercises designed to promote proper posture, ease of breath support and help your voice attain the best speaking resonance.
We will learn how to add musicality to the voice, how to control dynamics and best practices for using intonation to tell the story, or give a presentation.
For 20 years I've assisted in developing singers, public speakers and voice over artists to access their authentic voice with more ease, accompanied by a personal resume spanning a lifetime of performing. My training includes 12 years of one-on-one training in apprenticeship for the field.
[Letters of recommendation from my professors & voice teachers available upon request.]
Are you a singer or speaker who would like a more powerful, authentic voice? My focus is to assist you in finding an easier way to sustain your best posture, breath support, resonance and pitch control by bringing awareness to existing vocal habits while providing a hands-on experience adjusting those habits. My mission is to help you find your most relaxed & elongated posture, breath support, full resonance and best pitch control.
My specialty as a professional voice teacher is Contemporary Commercial Music [CCM] which encompasses genres & sub-genres from Pop, Country, Hip/Hop, Folk, Rock, R&B, Soul, Gospel, EDM [electronic dance music], etc.
I grew up singing freely and naturally until I destroyed my voice thru improper, frequent overuse. I believed my career was over, but it was just starting. Private lessons with vocal professio
nals coupled with academic studies rebuilt my perception of how I was generating sound and their training gave me back MY VOICE, for which I am forever grateful. I combine knowledge from these studies and my own vocal exploration to re-build my voice in exercises that I share with students of voice.
I CAN HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS: My cross-training in dance, yoga, Tai Chi, commercial & improvisational acting provides a well-rounded platform from which to deliver information, guide vocal explorers and also help develop talent.
EXPERIENCE: * 20 years teaching experience * 12 years living & working in Los Angeles * A lifetime of performing experience * 12 years personal private vocal studies master teachers of bel canto & contemporary singing techniques.
LIFE SKILLS: No matter the subject, my focus is also teach skills that can be extrapolated into any area of your life. Life Skills focuses on eradicating negative self-talk and expanding communication skills that help develop confidence, enhancing daily life.
Between performing and my own artistic studies, I have been taking the occasional private voice student since 1997, mostly via referrals from friends and other students. While living in California, one of my voice teachers requested me as her regular substitute at Culver City and Santa Monica Music Schools from 2008-2012, which I felt deeply honored. She said she trusted me with their voices, which encouraged me into full-time voice teaching practice. In June 2012, I returned to Minneapolis and began teaching in my home studio through music services like Take Lessons. Past projects include producing a vocal showcase at The Ritz Theater, musical direction & choreography for a school's 2016 production of the Wizard of Oz; assisting students to prepare for local & national auditions like La Banda, The Voice & American Idol; prepping singers for studio recordings and congratulating a new student who's stepped out of the chorus to land her first lead role!
I am forever grateful to all of my teachers, past and present, for their valuable gifts of knowledge, skill, grace and compassion.
ENJOY LIFE MORE! Singing & dancing improves our quality of life.

Thoroughly impressed! Arlys brings a unique style to teaching that is authentic, intuitive and highly effective.
April 25, 2019
Arlys listened well and focused on what my goals are, where I wanted to go with these lessons. I really enjoyed it, she made it fun.
April 17, 2019
I have experienced improvement in my confidence after 5 lessons with Arlys as compared to a decrease in confidence after working with another instructor for near one year (not a TL instructor). I now realize the ability to sing and play piano does not automatically equate to the ability to teach and most especially, the ability to teach someone who was not born a natural singer (such as myself). Arlys is that instructor that embraces where you are and understands the anatomy of the vocal instrument and the science behind making beautiful music (no matter your skills or lack-of). Arlys brings to the table a multitude of experiences that support her teaching style and learning for students with diverse singing backgrounds or no singing background. In a recent session with Arlys, I was introduced to "rock star monitor" which after incorporating it into our lesson, was a boost to my confidence and performance. Arlys is one of my favorite 5 instructors and the only one I am working with one-on-one at this time. I look forward to each lesson and hope she will continue with this teaching platform for a long time to come.
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and have recently completed my Master's degree in social work at Walden University. I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help students discover their unique voice, whether it be through singing, acting, or writing. I share with my students an array of tools to gain the ability
and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those areas for most of my adult life. I believe it is the teacher's job to respect each student's individual process of learning. My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, Blues and cabaret artists, and published writers.
*** Lesson Details *** Voice I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises. Acting As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on. Creative and Lyric Writing I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.
*** Studio Equipment *** home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents -practice studio seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, cabaret, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.
A very good first lesson. We went over breathing exercises and scales. Also had time for Amy to critique my speaking style through a portion of a speech I will be giving in a month. Time well-spent.
She briefly went over the next lesson plan and gave me a little homework to do as well.
I got a lot out of this lesson and I can see how this will help me accomplish my goal of being a better public speaker and having a more controlled and stronger voice.
Looking forward to future lessons.

Patient. Gifted Teacher!
June 23, 2019
Amy is absolutely incredible. She showed keen interest in my concerns and challenges. She listened and knew exactly what I needed to do to get to where I want to be. She makes it easy for me to understand and she is truly a great coach. I can’t wait to see her again.
Speech lessons are beneficial for many reasons. Perhaps you are getting ready for an interview, or your voice is frequently hoarse, maybe you desire your voice to sound different or perhaps you are a voice over artist looking to add a dialect or wanting to work on inflections. Speaking voice lessons give techniques on how to properly use the voice in a healthy way on a daily basis. If you are interested in the anatomy of the voice, I am more than happy to teach you that as well.
Lauren graduated from McNally Smith College of Music magna cum laude in 2011 with a bachelors in vocal performance. She played everywhere from Duluth. In addition to her McNally Smith Degree, Lauren received master classes from Bobby McFerrin and the New York Voices. Passionate about giving back to the community, Lauren instructed voice and piano students at the Urban Hub, a community center for inner city youth in Minneapolis MN. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect students will have a keyboard or piano.
*** Specialties *** Trained 10 years in classical voice and piano. Undergrad in contemporary voice. 12 years of theatre experience

Auditions!! They are definitely the most difficult and nerve wracking part of being an actor or singer, right? Booking work means your audition has to be as good as opening night. Auditioning is about preparation and preparation takes consistent support. Look, showbiz is not a business about being alone. Artists thrive when working together. We are a collaborative bunch and collaborating to make sure you're ready and organized for your auditions makes sense. Stop trying to muscle through this necessary step alone. No one who works consistently does that! They ask for help. ASK FOR HELP!! Solidify your acting choices so you don't have to worry about them the day before your audition. Know your prep so you can internally drop into it when the casting director says, "Whenever you're ready." Have your music material and performance choices prepared ahead of time. BE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. Work with me when your agent sends you your sides so you show up READY. Know your lines. It's OK if your struggling with memorization. Let's figure out How YOU memorize. Let me coach you for online audition submissions. If we are working virtually I will coach while you are taping yourself to submit your online audition. It works! Let me collaborate with on script analysis in order for you to you understand your material before you audition. Take your work seriously so you bring your most intelligent and inspiring work to the audition rooms. You'll be bringing the agents, casting directors, directors, producers and writers the inspiration they crave regarding their beloved projects. Do that and you're gonna book. "Normally, I don't write reviews for teachers until a couple of months have passed, but I acquiesce as TakeLessons keep on spamming me to write a review. U
nlike other reviews, I'm not going to act as an echo chamber for five-star reviews. This review is based on two months with her after ten one hour online lessons through Skype.
Let's start with the positives. Denise puts in a good amount of effort in teaching you. She's flexible with accommodating your schedule, and she tailors her lessons based on what your goals are. This is evident from her referring to her notes when beginning her lessons with me. She also isn't a clock watcher who makes sure your lesson ends straight on the minute unlike some other teachers.
Is she effective as a speaking voice teacher? So far, yes there has been some progress made. Her methodology might be a bit more different than other speaking voice teachers I studied under. Other teachers focus more on the phonetic sounds, while Denise linger more toward stretches probably due to her dancing background. If you don't like Yoga type of stretches, you may be in for a bad time.
Keep in mind that due to my focus on developing a voice for acting, I'm also not having a pure speaking voice lesson as my lessons are intertwined with monologue work too. If you wish to take speaking voice lessons for public speaking, your mileage may vary.
So why a one-star deduction? Denise at the start can be pushy with trying to sell you more lessons. I mean it goes without saying that of course you'll see improvements faster if you can devote more time to any class, but time and money are factors that everyone should always consider. Let's be frank, private lessons on TakeLessons aren't cheap (unless you're rich of course). I was annoyed when she repeated her tactic three times, enough that it affected my decision to nearly not renew my monthly lessons with her.
She did cease when it seem like I wouldn't budge. Nevertheless, the pushiness did leave my experience a bit tainted, which made me question her sincereness with her excitement and positive reinforcement at times. I continue to give her a chance though because I do feel there's an ongoing improvement with my speech and line delivery. Also because we get along despite being complete opposites in some ways (which seem to frustrate and intrigue her). Despite being my teacher, I see her as a peer in a way because of how close in age we are, but I digress as this review is about her effectiveness as a teacher.
I would recommend giving Denise a try if you’re an actor seeking a speaking voice teacher. In person lessons are still best, but she has proven to be effective as an online teacher despite being a tad pushy with having you buy more lessons from her."
"A bundle of knowledge and energy! Fantastic teaching skills and Im looking forward to our next lesson and to learning with Kim!
"Explanations of complicated things were made simple and easy to understnd."
