I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen
ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

After 3 or 6 months of consistent lesson attendance and practice, students will have a clear understanding of how their instrument works and how to care for it. They will be able to read basic music notation. They will be working toward clearly defined musical goals and they will have at least three performance pieces learned.

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. This tutor does not fill the total time paid for. If the student has no more questions, rather than structuring the lesson like other tutors he will simply finish early! I am sure he is very knowledgable, but his accent is very strong, making learning a newer subject harder through trying to understand new words with a strong accent.
A fan was constantly ticking in the background, and he admitted his internet connection was poor.

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING: Using my insight gained as a counseling student, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. I believe that such a space should be available for everyone, so I am especially happy to provide it.

My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). I work with grade school students and adults. ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. He was very nice and I highly recommend him!

Let's explore these ideas a little.

1) Hard (FUN!) Work
If you think writing stories is hard work but you do it anyway because it's fun, then you already have the mind of a writer. Congrats!

2) Good Strategies
One time a teacher gave me a "D" on a writing paper. I felt devastated. I had never earned less than an "A" on my papers, and so I asked my teacher what I had done wrong. She said my writing was "like syrup." And I thought: huh??? I didn't have a clue what she meant.

Later, I found out my teacher wanted me to write with words that sounded like a picture. For example, if I wanted to describe a windy day, I should have used words like "whisper" and "wavy" and "who
osh." When my teacher explained the assignment like that, I understood. But it was too late. I already had a red "D" on my paper, and my grade in the class went down. The teacher even gave me a look that said "I'm so disappointed in you." Talk about crushing a writer's feelings!

That memory always reminds me how important it is to communicate ideas clearly BEFORE giving an assignment.

3) Helpful Feedback
When people tell you your story is "good" or "bad," how can you tell what they mean? You can't. Unless they can tell you what they mean in ways you can understand them, their opinions aren't very helpful.

That's why I have a policy of identifying what is effective in a story and what is ineffective--and then gently explaining WHY. This is the fastest way I know to help a writer improve.

When I was nine years old (a super duper long time ago!), I sat down to write a story. It was about a group of kids about my age who were daring each other to knock on the door of an old, scary house. A haunted house!

Unfortunately, I never finished the story. Why? I didn't know how. I wanted someone to help me get it down. But there wasn't anyone to help me back then.

I don't want other young writers to give up on their stories. That's why I'm here.
Now, as a late-in-life English major, I continue to enjoy the process of inventing, analyzing, and discussing stories. Especially spooky ones! :D

I graduated in 2016 from Yeshiva University with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and decided to take the GRE before starting work full time as an investment banker at Credit Suisse in New York CIty. I took the test and scored better than I could've expected, and since then I've been hooked on trying to help other students feel that same feeling that I felt after taking the test.

I've spent my free time in the last 2.5 years working one-on-on with students to improve their comprehension and test scores, first focusing on the GRE and then expanding to include AP Calculus and Statistics. I focus on helping students to prepare and hone the specific skills that the question makers are targeting with their questions. Every standardized test is geared to test a certain set of skills that can be trained to any student with the right preparatio
n - my goal is to make sure that every one of my students feel that they have been prepped properly.

After some time I decided to take the GMAT in order to be able to attend business school in the future. After spending a few months studying and taking the test, I wanted to apply my knowledge regarding the test, and how to study for it, to help students achieve their business school dreams.

Nowadays, I spend most of my time working in a healthcare and real estate development and investment firm in Chicago, but still devote my free time to helping students plan and prepare for success in the GRE and GMAT.

My lessons will focus on bringing an interdisciplinary approach, pulling from the lenses of philosophy, economics, theology, physical and natural sciences, psychology, anthropology, and literature.
