About Amy

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and have recently completed my Master's degree in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help students discover their unique voice, whether it be through singing, acting, or writing. I share with my students an array of tools to gain the ability

and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those areas for most of my adult life. I believe it is the teacher's job to respect each student's individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, Blues and cabaret artists, and published writers.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

A very good first lesson. We went over breathing exercises and scales. Also had time for Amy to critique my speaking style through a portion of a speech I will be giving in a month. Time well-spent.

She briefly went over the next lesson plan and gave me a little homework to do as well.

I got a lot out of this lesson and I can see how this will help me accomplish my goal of being a better public speaker and having a more controlled and stronger voice.

About Mena

I have been tutoring Common Core Math, Algebra I & II, Geometry, SAT, ACT, and Grade school math since 2012; there is nothing I enjoy more than watching my students succeed.

I create a relaxed environment for my students in order to make the work stress free and enjoyable. My goal is to make the coursework fun for the student by finding an approach to learning that works best based on their unique characteristics. Being able to empathize with students in order to understand where their challenges lie and patient in helping them overcome those hurdles is where I excel. By exploring different approaches to difficult concepts I break them into manageable pieces that fit with each students prior experience which make learning approachable rather than overwhelming. Behind every concept we have yet to master there is a myth in our mind about

what it entails. Demystifying through creativity and humor allows my students to overcome a combination of fear, frustration and/or complacency that we all experience at some point while learning.

I have tutored dozens of students in the SAT and ACT and have helped them all increase their scores with most increasing their SAT score at least 100 points and some by over 400 points and on the ACT most by over 8 points and some by over 15 points. These are very difficult tests designed to be difficult to improve on. All of my students who gave themselves plenty of time to prepare and followed through on their promise to work on their own have seen significant score improvements.I have also worked with numerous students on developing study skills; helping them find the fun in school as well as helping with their organization skills and approach to homework.

We like Mena’s Style of teaching. He has a way to get my 16-yr-old son to study and do extra math work daily. He goes through the lessons to prep my son for the school work and also get him to do the SAT prep. He has a lot of knowledge and tricks on the SAT that are very helpful. We do a weekly class with Mena is the past 6 months and will continue through high school.

For these I give classes in theory, music history, ear training, and technique along with the note reading. Older students generally want to learn to play songs they know by learning notes in the right hand and putting chords in the left hand. For these students, I emphasize the theory so they will understand what notes go together to make a nice sound.

My background has been in church music. I started playing at church for services when I was 16 years old.
