I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre, mostly in the city.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returne
d to NYC, I began to build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

I teach voice lessons to adults and young students who are beginning their vocal training practice, as well as those who are accomplished singers and performers and want to take their singing and performance to the next level! I use my skills as an accomplished vocalist and teacher to empower my students to find their own voice and learn to express a story through song. I enable my students to hone their craft and find their own style of expression through the exploration of music in a multitude of genres and cultures.

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn 5 Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
1. Pitch
2. Rhythm
3. Breath
4. Voice
5. Diction
Pitch
Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA

I have been a professional voice, music theory and piano teacher for the last ten years, and have loved every minute of it. I am originally from Canada, and went to the University of Windsor to study vocal performance. I was given an opportunity to the study principals of classical singing and musical theater. From there, I began to work as a featured classical soloist and choral singer throughout Canada. I came to New York to continue my studies, and earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

I believe that singing lessons should be a lot of fun. With good technique, my students and I can team up to accomplish anything from singing classical songs and even some opera arias to popular songs and musical theater. *** Lesson Details ***
My lessons with always begin with warm ups and technique. We'll also focus on an important principal topic, such as breath and support, vowel placement or expression. We'll use some exercises that I have already, or perhaps a new one just for your needs (once I get to know your voice) to help you achieve our goals. We'll then work on 1-2 songs. You'll probably have picked one, and I may have picked one. The concept that we worked on in our technique session will be applied directly to the songs you are working on. You can learn so many different things in each song, we may practice your songs, using a different goal in several different lessons.
All of my students get a chance to perform in occasional "vocal class" settings, where you can sing your favorite songs for one another, in a fun, laid back environment. All students are welcome to participate in an annual recital for their family and friends too! Piano lessons are designed to suit your needs. We can work on the basics for classical playing, read chords, jazz improv and more.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own music studio set up in my apartment. On teaching days, my living room can be a comfortable waiting room for parents/guardians. You are all most welcome to relax, have a cup of tea or coffee and listen to our lessons. I do ask that you do not sit inside the studio (at least not after the first lesson) as this can be distracting for your child. My studio is equipped with a music stand, upright piano, work sheets for theory, pencils and crayons. I also have a full Broadway and classical music library that students can borrow from, CD/DVD's that can be borrowed, and a New Grove Reference set.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring some music, until we assess the student's needs, then they may buy some books, while I provide the rest. I bring theory worksheets, stickers, pencils etc. If a student would like to sing/play a particular song (Broadway/pop etc) I may have it in my music library.If I do not, the student will need to purchase the music they would like to sing. The student would need a keyboard/piano in their home should I travel. I have a piano in my home.

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you'™re incapable of achieving what you pursue. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Vanessa is amazing. She is working with my 13-year old son and has him inspired and confident with huge improvements to his acting and singing ability. She has worked around our crazy schedule and seems to truly care about my son's success. We would definitely recommend her to anyone, were very lucky to find her on this site and have no hesitation in continuing lessons with her.

Tiffany is very skilled and proficient at her profession. She is also exceptional at being able to translate and communicate those core competencies and techniques to her students in such a manner that there are specific exercises identified to encourage them to learn, practice and refine their developing skills and talent. My nephew's dramatic presentation has grown significantly during his time of being coached and trained by Tiffany. I would recommend Tiffany, without reservation, as an instructor to anyone who is serious about advancing his or her acting skills.

About Victorius
Victorius Michel is a native from Den Haag/ The Hague, NL. He began his dance training at the Diana Meijer Dance Academy. He is a graduate of the Lucia Marthas University, Amsterdam (NL), where he earned a BFA in Musical Theater and a BA in Education.

He is a 2-time recipient of the VanDenEnde Foundation scholarship grant and a recipient of the EMIA Summer Award of Merit & Talent Scholarship.

He attended the Ailey Summer intensive and EMIA summer intensive, and studied at the Ailey school where he completed the independent study. He has performed works by a range of choreographers including Troy Powell, Anthony van Laast, Bob Fosse, Pearl Primus, Abdel Salaam. Victorius has danced background for recording artist Lisa Lisa, Danced in Saturday Night the Musical (NL).

In 2015 he performed in Santiago de Cuba at the FinDance Festi
val with KaNu Dance Theater. In 2016 he toured Japan with Vissi Dance Theater. He also performs with Something Positive Inc, Phyllis Rose and Forces of Nature.

Victorius is also an arts in education teacher and has taught for EM Techniques, Arts to Grow and the Lucia Marthas Academy, in the styles ballet, hip hop, jazz, Tap, Afro-Caribbean and contemporary. He joined the Teaching Artist Roster of AIley’s Arts in Education and Community Programs in 2016

He has been seriously engaged in the art and craft of acting since a teen. Subsequently, he pursued two theater related degrees, the most recent being a MFA in Acting from Rutgers, Mason Gross School of the Arts.

He has taught Acting & Public Speaking for the last eighteen years, both on a collegiate and secondary school level. Moreover, he's acted in or directed numerous high quality theater productions.

Othell brings a mature artistry and a professional approach to his teaching style. He maintains high expectations for students and motivates them them to achieve their goals. Not only have I witnessed Othell's success in helping students to grow in theatre/acting, he inspires students' personal growth and confidence. As a director, his productions are thoughtful, relevant, and ambitious. I can only imagine how useful, effective, and enjoyable his one-on-one sessions would be!

Mr. Miller has a passion for acting and teaching and it is clear he loves doing both. He has been my acting instructor for 6 years and under his direction he has crafted my raw talent into a full fledged artistry. With him as my instructor he has helped me craft audition material that, after my execution, turned into an acceptance from two college level conservatories.
