About Zachary
Dear Students and Parents:

My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich my immediate community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building strong connections with my students at absolutely any level. My personal musical performing experiences span opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and R&B. I am so excited to share my knowledge and passion for singing with you, as well as any other subject
we find to explore! As of February 2013, I am also available through TakeLessons' online instruction program! Please find more information below and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

Zachary B.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I am always happy to hear from new students!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open area between the living room and the dining room, seating available, piano to accompany the voice lesson, garage/driveway/street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I prefer for my students to have a keyboard or piano, and if possible, a music stand. We can always make a situation work if the student does not have access to these tools. I provide music, pencils, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I am an opera singer, and specialize in classical singing. However, I apply similar vocal technique to all genres of music, and focus on breathing technique, body and energy awareness, and discuss a holistic approach to singing with all students.

Greetings! My name is Tommy Huang, and I am an expert in Mathematics. I am happy to offer tutoring services for anyone who wants help learning Mathematics. Helping others has always been a major passion of mine, and I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to pass my knowledge and skills on to others.

I earned my Master’s degree in Statistics and Applied Mathematics, and my Bachelor’s degree was in Mathematics and Economics. I first started working as a Math tutor during my undergrad years, and I continue to help students to this day. Through the years, I have worked as both a classroom teacher, as well as a private tutor. As a tutor, I have taught at several colleges, learning centers and even private homes.

Most of my students are Middle School, High School, or College students who either need extra assistance in Math or are loo
king to get ahead and learn advanced material. With my help, students improve their grades and gain confidence in their Math skills. Additionally, I also regularly assist students in preparing for the Math sections on important Standardized Tests, such as the SAT and the ACT. Most of my students report that they achieve highly-desirable results on these tests thanks to my help.

I teach my students how to recognize patterns and how to apply appropriate problem-solving techniques whenever they encounter a certain type of problem. Math is all about recognizing problems and applying the appropriate steps in order to reach a solution. Once a student knows how to recognize problems and use the correct techniques to reach a desired outcome, they can accomplish almost anything in Math.

My favorite aspect of tutoring is having the ability to teach something I love, while also working to improve the lives of others. It gives me great joy whenever I am able to help a student overcome their obstacles and achieve success. I really enjoy Math, and I want to show my students that Math can be fun and exciting with a little bit of practice. I believe that anyone can learn Math if they put their mind to it.

I offer competitive rates for my tutoring services, and I guarantee outstanding results. If you have any questions, or you would like to inquire about receiving tutoring, please send me a message, and I will return it as soon as possible. Thanks, and have a great day!

About Mariana
Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. I specialize in musical theatre, but have a thorough classical technique, as well as strong pop/rock/belt training.

My teaching style is highly energetic, and engages the development of the student's self-esteem and enjoyment, but is also focused on a foundational technique and strong work-ethic. I am extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments many of my students have made, from achieving principal parts in their school productions, to even getting cast in Broadway shows. I am determined to help every on
e of my students reach their greatest potentials.

As a tutor, my approach is no different. Trained in the highly specialized and effective Lindamood-Bell programs, I have an intuitive grasp of children's needs and levels. I teach decoding, math, and reading comprehension, and nurture students' self-esteem and independence in their learning.

We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

My teaching style is student-centric and organic. I draw from a wide-ranging toolbox of techniques to find the approach that will work for you. What is most enjoyable and interesting for you usually points to the most efficient and effective path for learning, because your nervous system thrives and builds best when you feel open and engaged.

As a teacher, I draw on my professional experience as an actor and singer, my teaching background in myriad subjects (Feldenkrais, Music Together, general music, theatre, yoga, fitness, literature, etc.), and my eclectic training in acting, classical voice, musical theatre, various methods of body work, and healing.

I strive to create a working environment where students feel safe to take risks, learn to challenge themselves, and find increased joy and freedom in expression. Self-awareness/body
-awareness, relaxation, and nurturing of individuality are emphasized above all.

Though I have a long background in performing arts and performing arts education, my teaching philosophies and techniques draw primarily from my study of movement and mindfulness through disciplines such as yoga, and especially the Feldenkrais Method, "a remarkable approach to human movement, learning and change... based on sound principles of physics, neurology and physiology, and the conditions under which the nervous system learns best." (The Feldenkrais Institute, NY, NY, 2013).

Training/experience:

- Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Teacher
- Feldenkrais Practitioner Training Program certification in process
- Bachelor of Music, Highest Honors, SUNY Binghamton
- Professional singing in the US and Europe
- Professional acting throughout the US, theater and film (member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA)
- 100+ hours of YA approved yoga teacher training
- Eclectic studies in voice and body work (Linklater, Sound Healing, various dance styles, Kinetic Awareness, Tai Chi, Beijing Opera techniques)
- Kids/family music teacher certified by Music Together (an amazing, international, research-based program)
- Teaching artist (opera, chorus, musical theater, acting/improv, mindfulness) at schools around NYC - Bronx High School for Law and Finanace, PS 129, Yorkville East MS, Baruch MS, Anderson MS, PS 3
- Former fitness instructor

Finding mastery in practices of music, acting, and mindfulness have core similarities - when you find your flow, it feels like flying. But we have to start from the ground up. The stronger the foundation, the higher you fly. Let's get started!

Notes on teaching locations:

- HOME STUDIO: For a number of reasons, I prefer to teach at my home studio whenever possible. I have two friendly cats - hope you aren't allergic!

- ONLINE: For some students, online lessons are very effective, but for others, it is imperative to meet in person. So if you would like to try online lessons, please message me first to discuss,

Peace,
Briana

Amy is so great with kids! I originally hired Amy to help my daughter with essay writing, as she was applying for a private high school. Amy quickly zeroed in on my daughter's weak points in writing, and had fun activities to help improve the weak points. I feel that my daughter's writing greatly improved because she went from writing short 2 or 3 paragraph answers to full essays in a few weeks. My daughter loved the writing topics, and was thrilled to begin writing her entrance essay. With Amy's guidance and direction, my daughter wrote an amazing, well organized essay that resulted in my daughter getting into her 1st choice school. We actually kept Amy on beyond the writing tutoring, because she has such a way of breaking down concepts.

I am a comedy writer and screenwriter based in Brooklyn, NY.

I specialize in creative writing, academic writing, and college admissions essays. Whether you or your child wants to improve their writing, loves writing but experiences writer's block or an inability to actually DO the writing, or wants to workshop essays for a class, application, or personal project, I am excited to work together with my students and help them achieve their goals.

At Tufts University I studied English with a focus in creative writing. In school I wrote a mix of analytical papers and creative works, culminating in a fiction thesis. In school I taught a successful weekly creative writing class to homeschooled students, helping them improve their writing and create new and engaging stories that they later submitted to contests and magazines around the Northe
