We've only had one session so far, but Amy really knows her content. She assessed my 8 year old son's reading/spelling/vocab skills quickly and accurately and was very kind and engaging during the session. I feel confident he'll be at the level we want him to be by the start of the school year.

About Jackie
Hi! My name is Jackie, and I have 15+ years of experience in teaching, tutoring, and training. Currently, I am enjoying managing two small businesses while teaching students part time.

All of my students, meaning a perfect 100%, have improved their grades by at least one letter grade, if not more, and passed every one of their tests and exams. I help ALL my clients reach their goals!

A couple years ago, I returned to San Diego after living in Peru for several years where I taught English as a second language. My students ranged from adult business people and academicians to primary and secondary school students. I really needed to utilize different teaching methods depending on each student’s needs. Some students wanted more business-related conversation, so I had to be able to teach business principles in marketing, communication,
logistics, interviewing, and so much more. Critical thinking was an area that I pushed my business students to improve. Other students needed to work on the basics of grammar, reading, and writing, and we had a lot of fun in class, whether going through the interactive lesson or improvising by playing fun games to emphasize thinking on their feet in another language.

The feedback I often received from my Peruvian students, as well as my students in Mexico and the U.S., was that I made learning an enjoyable experience—they wanted to work harder to advance quickly in their classes. All of my students agree that I have a lot of patience and turn even the most challenging lessons into ones of positivity and encouragement. I provide critical feedback in the most constructive of ways that help the students reach conclusions on their own. I enjoy being there to support and guide their experience!

Before I left for Peru, I worked at St Vincent de Paul Village (part of Father Joe's Villages) in downtown San Diego. There I focused on Health Education. I built the Villages' first Health Education department and helped start its innovative Health & Wellness program. As part of these two programs, I taught homeless and low-income adults with and without learning disabilities, as well as children from preschoolers to high school students. Teaching such a wide variety of students how to improve their health while living in sometimes precarious situations without much income or stability pushed me to think creatively and come up with memorable ways to engage the students and help them apply what they had learned in their daily routine.

In high school, I took all AP and college prep classes. I went to a liberal arts college in Virginia where I focused on social studies and biology. I spent a few years training business people in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, as well as presentation techniques. In grad school, I specialized in applied anthropology and public health. During that time, I tutored students in web design. In between, I've worked in Communications and Training in international health and development, so I have a lot of experience to bring to teaching.

Basically, I love teaching. I'm enthusiastic yet patient, and I absolutely adore helping kids and adults alike learn. It's such a sense of accomplishment when my students show off their terrific grades. I see the same look in my students’ eyes regardless of age—that pride that shines from within, that exuberant smile, like they can conquer anything. I want my students to keep that pride for a long, long time.

Right now, I'm writing two textbooks to be used in my Spanish classes. I've also written several academic articles published online. I love traveling, cats, and learning!

Rather than hard and fast lessons, it was an opportunity to spend time, one on one, with a professional and learn from his experiences what works and what doesn't.

About Jiawan
Hi there! This is Jiawan, and I'm here to help you achieve your goal.

A little about me. I was born and raised in Beijing, both my parents are professors. I went to Japan for high school, after that, England. I spent almost five years there, got my Bachelor's and Master's degree. After severn years of living oversea, I went back home in 2010 and worked in a film/animation company for several years. In 2014, I came to the States, finished another Master program at University of Miami. After graduated from UM, I moved to Michigan to live with my boyfriend. Last summer, we just got married. Right now, I’m working as s freelancer for a LA based indie film company. In my spare time, I also write my own stories and scripts.

A little about my Chinese lesson. I started to teach Chinese (both simplified and traditional) as a part-time job si
nce 2007, so I'm pretty confident on it. Student of all ages and levels are welcomed. One thing I would like to point out is unless you have required textbook, I tend not to use any existing learning materials as they always turn out rather boring and disappointing and so out of date. The first session will just be we get to know each other and discuss your goal (and it will be free), then I will design each session and make materials by myself.

A little about my Math lesson. I don't believe that Asian people are better at Math, but I do agree that we have some unique ways to master basic Math, which may make Math easier for grade school student.

A little about my writing lesson. As an international student, I graduated from my bachelor's program with a GPA 3.5, my first master's program with a GPA 3.8, and my second master's program with a GPA 4.0. Academic writing can be tricky, especially for those international students who do not have any experience before. I will show you the rules of academic writing, and you will find out that you don't need a perfect English to get an A for your essay.

A little about my college admissions lesson. To apply for a program is to make yourself different from other candidates and suitable for the program. I did my undergraduate and postgraduate application all by myself, and got accepted by my first choice school. With a little bit luck, let's knock your dream school's door open together.

A little about my IELTS prep class. IELTS is a language level test for non-native English speakers, so to get a higher score, a good foundation is necessary. Also, you need test taking skills and proper trainings to master it. That is why I'm here to help.

Thanks for reading this. If there's anything I could help, please don't hesitate to contact me. Have a nice day!

About Matt
I'm a professional, independent, highly experienced private teacher. I specialize in high-level academic tutoring and rigorous test preparation for high school, college, and graduate students.

I studied math, literature, and philosophy at MIT and Harvard, and I have a decade of professional teaching, tutoring, and mentoring experience in the Boston metro area -- and around the world by Skype. I've always been interested in both the sciences and the humanities, and I love sharing my passion for ideas. On the science side, I've worked in labs at NASA, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the McGovern Insitute for Brain Research, and MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. And on the humanities side, I was an editor at a political and literary magazine for four years; I've also edited three books published by MIT
Press and co-edited a chapbook of poetry including work by the former U.S. Poet Laureate. When I'm not teaching, I'm probably reading, writing, running, or thinking about teaching.

My philosophy is simple: I teach the way I would want to be taught. No matter the subject, my goal is to help students achieve deep mastery and long-lasting understanding, not just better grades and test scores. I emphasize critical and creative thinking, never rote memorization or mechanical rule-following. I focus on big-picture ideas and precise reasoning -- not just the what or the how but the why.

My profile here at TakeLessons is new, but I have more than 60 student testimonials. I'm happy to put prospective clients in touch with former students.

"A rare gem.”
Matt is a rare gem in the tutoring world. He has an amazing style of teaching. He really goes in depth. My 11th grader son has a lot of respect for him. According to my son, "Matt is a genius". His logic and teaching style makes him stand out. Matt is not only great in mathematics, he is absolutely fantastic in english, reading, and writing. He loves to breakdown complex problems for his students to understand and also expects his students to ask him questions. Matt has helped my son in calculus, reading, and writing and my son has benefitted and enjoyed the lessons to the fullest. One thing that impressed me the most was that he does not need the answer keys to verify correct answers. He trusts his own reasoning in his explanations. But, there is one problem: once you hire him as a tutor, its hard to find another of equal caliber. Thanks to Matt, our son got into Cornell.

I never believed in tutoring, with the plethora of resources available online. But when I decided to test out of
a pre-calculus course in my sophomore year and take AP Calculus BC instead, my mother thought of finding
some help for me. After struggling for months to find a good tutor, she found Matt online, and his
biography looked impressive. In our first meet, Matt’s questions were very engaging and thought-provoking
and I realized, “This guy is a genius.”
Matt has helped me with math, reading, writing, and my college applications. He has also mentioned,
“Although I am not a physicist, I can read and explain AP Physics C if needed.” Matt is a master in logic and
his confidence is unmistakable. Matt’s lessons were always profound and enjoyable, which made me
confident with high school subjects like probability and statistics, calculus; as well as college-level courses
such as multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Thanks to his help, I was both
accepted to Cornell University's College of Engineering and wait-listed to Harvard University!
Matt has been helping me in all aspects of academic decisions and progresses. Matt isn’t just a tutor: he is a
mentor, counselor, and guide. My mother says that Matt is smart and a great teacher in developing talent in
students.

About Natalie
Oh, hello! I'm Natalie. I'm an author, illustrator, speaker, teacher, dog mom, and improviser.

I've been doing improv for about seven years now, and have been writing professionally for nearly a decade. I've had some cool improv experiences over the years - including that one weird time where I was in a weekly show with my troupe on the island of Bali - and today, have written seven books, including the bestselling Peter Able series.

Now, I want to share what I love about improv and creative writing with you! I have lead many workshops and classes for students anywhere from seven to seventy. In my classes, I'll also be using a lot of Authentic Relating* and circling to dive into any creative blocks you might have, and really feel into what's alive.

By the end of our time together, you'll feel more present, more embodied, connect
ed to yourself, confident, and hopefully, will have had a whole lot of fun!

*Authentic Relating and circling are tools for deep connection, vulnerability, and honesty. I am a trained Authentic Relating facilitator and would love to create a safe and welcoming space to guide you into what's alive.

I so enjoyed the improv class I took with Natalie at the Texas Authentic Relating Retreat this past weekend! Natalie was playful and present and explained the games clearly. Even though it was a single class, she had us do scene work right off the bat, even with some of us being beginning improvisors. Her approach of using games and exercises to ease into it really took the edge off my fear of doing "big scary improv scenes." I had so much fun and laughed a LOT. I would definitely take another improv class with her again!! Thanks Natalie!!

I've done improv work in the past but it's been quite a while, and I've found the idea to be intimidating lately. Natalie, however, was a fabulous instructor - she was fun, engaging, and eased the class from warm ups into more complex exercises seamlessly. I learned a bunch of new games and some new twists on old favorites - this class inspired hands down the funniest moments of my entire weekend retreat :)

About Abbi
I graduated in 2016 from Yeshiva University with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and decided to take the GRE before starting work full time as an investment banker at Credit Suisse in New York CIty. I took the test and scored better than I could've expected, and since then I've been hooked on trying to help other students feel that same feeling that I felt after taking the test.

I've spent my free time in the last 2.5 years working one-on-on with students to improve their comprehension and test scores, first focusing on the GRE and then expanding to include AP Calculus and Statistics. I focus on helping students to prepare and hone the specific skills that the question makers are targeting with their questions. Every standardized test is geared to test a certain set of skills that can be trained to any student with the right preparatio
n - my goal is to make sure that every one of my students feel that they have been prepped properly.

After some time I decided to take the GMAT in order to be able to attend business school in the future. After spending a few months studying and taking the test, I wanted to apply my knowledge regarding the test, and how to study for it, to help students achieve their business school dreams.

Nowadays, I spend most of my time working in a healthcare and real estate development and investment firm in Chicago, but still devote my free time to helping students plan and prepare for success in the GRE and GMAT.
