Mrs. Jen has been a violin teacher for our daughter for 3.5 years. She is an extremely qualified and talented musician who deeply cares about her students and is committed to teaching. She is kind and patient, but also effective and motivating. When our 8 year old daughter learned Mrs. Jen was moving she said, "I probably will never have as neat or special of a violin teacher as Mrs. Jen"- and she's right!

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

The public school system of today requires individuals to function as a different kind of educator. They need teachers who will not only teach, but will also inspire and lead. Moreover, they need administrators who understand the different relationships between students, parents, and schools. As an administrator, I oversaw the successful deployment of several tutoring programs and worked to ensure the longevity of these initiatives. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to contribute.

About Celeste
I am a graduate student in Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. Still, I have a wealth of experience in the classroom and in after-school programs. I have been a tutor for over ten years and have taught a wide variety of subjects to an array of different students.

About Gordon
Hello! My name is Gordon L. and I would love to help you or your child discover your passions and work towards reaching any academic or artistic goals!

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, I am fortunate to have had an exceptional academic foundation. I attended Punahou School K-12 earning high marks and went on to graduate college from the University of California, Berkeley. I have a variety of expertise and tutoring experience in these subjects:

- Computer Programming
- Math
- Chinese
- Humanities
- SAT

Outside of school, I have also always been an artist and hobbyist, heavily investing myself in various forms of creative expression including:

- Dance (hip-hop/urban)
- Photography (DSLR, Lightroom/Photoshop)
- Card magic/Card flourishes (look it up :P)

Over the years, I have found that my enthusiasm for both people
and learning different things greatly enriches my life and those around me. If you're looking for someone who can introduce you to a variety of subjects, I'm your guy. I love learning about anything and everything and hope to encourage others to explore their passions. Furthermore, though my interests are many and varied, I have also committed years into training, have a solid grasp on their principles, and can confidently say that I am a qualified expert. I break down steps to make math less intimidating. I draw visuals and use real life examples. With a positive mindset and some practice, math will be a breeze!

About Mary
English language teacher with more than 10 years of experience. I have taught all levels, from beginners who don't speak any English, to advanced lessons within businesses where my clients already understood English but wanted to improve pronunciation, grammar, and email etiquette. I am passionate about teaching and my students express how much I help them with valuable feedback and quality lessons.

I attended Seton Hall University for Education and Spanish. I attended Rutgers to study teaching English as a Second Language. I am certified in New Jersey.

In our first lesson I like to see what level students are, ask what their goals are, and begin lessons that target those goals. I love to help my students accomplish their goals and enjoy the process!

I have 8 years of experience as a tutor, including a gap year running an after-school tutoring program for at risk youth. I'm a firm believer that, despite what many students believe, almost no one is "bad at math." As a consequence, a major component of my job as a tutor is to help students develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed in any math class. Of the dozens of students that I've tutored over the years, I have yet to have a student whose grades did not significantly improve after working with them for a few weeks. In several cases, students who had previously failed math classes ended the year with As or Bs. I'm passionate about helping students achieve and I look forward to working together!

About Josh
I'm a researcher with 8 years of tutoring experience and spent a gap year directing an after-school tutoring program for at-risk youth. Over the years I've tutored dozens of students (in subjects ranging from biology, math, and earth science to English writing, SAT prep, and statistics) and have yet to come across someone whose grades did not significantly improve after our time working together. I'm more than happy to provide references to anyone looking to hear more about my past work.

I'm passionate about tutoring because I believe every student has the potential to thrive in an academic environment. Unfortunately, many students aren't taught in way that helps them achieve conceptual mastery or don't get enough individual attention in the classroom. That's why I believe in the power of the personal, individualized tutoring relationshi
p. When a tutor, I focus on a few things:

1) Concept Mastery - I work to help students understand that it's not enough to just understand how to solve a problem, but that you also need to understand why that solution works. If you have a deep conceptual mastery over the material, you'll be able to solve new kinds of problems with those same skills, even if you haven't encountered a problem like it before.

2) Academic Confidence – I’m always surprised by the number of students that I work with who honestly believe they aren’t smart or capable enough to succeed in school. So, part of my job as a tutor is to help those students understand that hard work and confidence are the key to success, so matter how difficult they find the work initially.

3) Love of Learning – This is perhaps the most important element to me. My favorite teachers were not the ones who managed to cram the most amount of information in my head, but those who helped me be excited about the subjects they taught. As a tutor, I work with students to develop excitement about the subject matter and a love of learning more generally.

Finally, here’s a bit more information about me. Currently, I'm a public health researcher at a large non-profit, and specialize in systematic reviews and project evaluation. I studied Sociology and Public Policy at UNC Chapel Hill. I graduated summa cum laude and received a Chancellor's award for excellence in my field of study. In the new few years, I plan to go back for a PhD in clinical psychology. I look forward to working with you or your student!

Josh was a very patient and a hands on tutor. He took time to get to know each student in order to better assist them personally. He had good boundaries with the students and was able to stay professional while being able to have fun with them. We saw personal gains based on the VA SOL test scores at the end of the school year after his assistance.

Both of my sons went from F’s to B’s with Josh’s help. We had all pretty much given up that they would be able to get good grades in math. We were just hoping Josh could get them to pass. We can’t say enough about Josh’s clear, understandable and relevant guidance. Yes, they got great grades, but he also made them feel confident in their abilities to do the work. He is wonderful!
