I've been teaching ballet for over twenty years. My ballet teacher was a Bolshi alumnai. He and his dad both danced for the Bolshi before they came to America. I teach a combination of Vaganova and my own updated style to keep my students interested in the style. I use classical music and pop to help students gain a love and appreciation for the style.
I have been teaching Piano for 20 years now. I have taught students from age 2 1/2 - Adult. I was self-taught when I was a kid and begun taking formal lessons as a very young adult in my early twenties. I graduated from CSULB with my BA in Music with a concentration on Voice. As a Music major, you spend a lot of time at the Piano. I became a member of MTAC in 2004 and a member of Sigma Alpha Iota in 1998. I have a great passion for Music and a bigger passion for the Piano and sharing the wonders of how beautiful the Piano really is.
*** Lesson Details *** In my opinion, piano is the hardest instrument to learn, but the most rewarding. If you can play piano you can pretty much play any instrument. I believe that a piano lesson should be fun. I'm a strict teacher with a smile and a giggle. I push my students to greatness while helping t
hem love the piano through the good times and the bad. I'm a very encouraging but honest teacher. I compliment when warranted and I assess incorrect performances in an honest, but encouraging manner. I always let a student know that, though their performance was not their best, they can and will improve. It's always only a matter of time. I use the Schaum and Nevin series depending on the student's personality. I teach Classical and Pop Music. It's important for a student to learn the Classics and gain the ability to play things they like. I find the happy balance between the two. I teach Beginning to Intermediate levels. I also like to incorporate Music theory into the lessons because understanding the mechanics of Music helps make playing and creating Music much easier to accomplish. A typical lesson will start off with a hand drill warm up. We then will move on to the lesson book and repertoire. Theory will be assigned as homework. I look it over at the beginning of the lesson and discuss it and answer any questions in the last five minutes of class. Baby lessons go as followed: 15 mins. of play time and 15 mins of Music theory. I like to keep structure in my lessons but sprinkle a little joy and laughter to keep the atmosphere light. It makes for a much more attentive Piano student.
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect the student to have a Piano or Keyboard of some sort. I may provide music on occasion.
My class focuses on the use and understanding of movement execution as well as ballet vocabulary. The class will start with a ballet barre, then move to center work, and across the floor. Younger students will be taught with the effective use of imagery for movement and older students will focus on the anatomy of the body. Students will be expected to bring a journal to each lesson to note vocabulary and movement combinations and review outside of lessons.
Briana has enjoyed teaching since she was a teaching assistant at Detroit Windsor Dance Academy, her high school dance studio. Since then she has taught students within Washington DC Public Schools, the University of Michigan Recreation Center, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, Morton Street Dance Center, District Dance Arts, as well as many other studios and non-profit organizations. Teaching allows her to express herself, pass on her knowledge and experiences and inspire students to develop their technique, creativity, individuality and showmanship.
There is never a dull moment in Briana’s classes! Her specific classes and lesson plans are catered to specific age groups from Pre-K to adults. They consist of engaging movement activities, warm-up, and complex movement combinations. She is an energetic and patient teacher who seriously
takes into account the needs and skill level of the student in preparing her lesson plans and material.
Briana’s use of dance vocabulary and physical demonstrations allow her to teach the material accurately and effectively. Her positive attitude and constant words of encouragement keep students motivated and engaged in the lesson. Students will increase their knowledge and physical vocabulary of the movement style and leave each lesson a better dancer, performer and person.
She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Dance and Bachelors of Arts in Sociology from the University of Michigan in May of 2013 and has had a wide range of professional experience. She has worked with and performed works by modern dance choreographers such as Lindsey Merchant, Melissa Beck, Germaul Barnes, Jessica Fogel, Christopher Huggins, Shen Wei and Dianne McIntyre. She was artistic director of a chapter of the international hip-hop dance company Dance2XS International.
Briana was a full-time company member with StepAfrika!, a professional stepping company in Washington, DC from 2013-2015 and currently, she is working with CityDance resident artist S.J. Ewing & Dancers. Briana has had the privilege of performing at DC's City Rhythms Festival, Catholic Universities Hartke Theater, the Hill Center, the VelocityDC Festival, the Guantanomo Bay Naval Base as well as others. Recently she was invited to perform a modern dance solo in Dance Place’s 2014 New Releases Choreographers Showcase and Joy of Motions 2014 Dance Project Concert. Most recently, she served as the assistant choreographer on the American Theater’s Company’s production of The Project(s) in Chicago, IL, rated 4 stars by the Chicago Tribune. Most recently, she collaborated with Hard Soles Dance Company on a new piece titled “Re:set”, combining contemporary dance and body percussion, for the 2016 March on Washington Film Festival in honor of the 70th anniversary of the integration of the NFL and was chosen as Dance Place's 2016 New Releases Commission Recipient in support her new work to be premiered the summer of 2017.
Briana encourages students to bring writing materials to each lesson to take notes for any learned vocabulary and each lesson will follow with a recorded video of the movement for the students to refer to until the next lesson.
I'm extremely new to ballet and dance in general (for reference I'm 16). Briana was very patient and an amazing teacher! Very friendly and welcoming while still being very professional. It's great to get the exact corrections I need without feeling bad about it and yet still work on it until proper. Very happy and pleased!

My daughter had a great first session. She identified my daughters areas of weakness and began immediately to help improve them. Looking forward to our next session.

I am already worried that if I tell people how amazing Briana is that she will get too booked up for me :) She is a great instructor with a huge heart. Loved it.
Ballet is one style I would recommend to every single athlete. Ballet teaches body awareness and control. It elongates the body, builds flexibility and stamina. I love basic/beginner level ballet because it consciously helps you focus on every muscle and part body. With ballet technique under your belt other forms of dance can be picked up easier and athletes will have better grace and quicker transitions on the playing field.
Hiii... I'm Dwan and I'm so excited to meet with you and have a blast learning with each other. I've been teaching private lessons since 2000 and I have loved the growth that I have seen in my clients; gained skills in multiple dance styles, grasping the understanding of musicality & coordination, and the comfortability in stage presence. My journey began in 6 grade at my college prep magnet school Charleston County School of The Arts; I attended this school through 12th grade and thereafter I excepted a scholarship to Columbia College. These two schools gave me the foundation of dance history, tech, skills in instructing, and the quality of being versatile in styles. Along with a professional background in music videos, tv shows. productions, and tours; I have insight on how to market yourself in the entertainment industry. Best way
to describe myself, I'm high energy and I'm a big bubble of fun, and my teaching style is full of dedication, patience, and positive reinforcement. I look forward to helping you reach you goals!!! Let's Dance!!!!
We have been working with Dwan for a few weeks now. Our experience has been excellent. She is knowledgeable, listens well and sincerely tries to help my daughter attain her dance goals. Dwan is also very encouraging and just has an overall uplifting spirit. I highly recommend Dwan.

Dwan's classes are so much fun! She's detailed about her instructions and makes you feel comfortable. She makes sure you're having a good time and helps you find your own style!
I grew up in Denmark in Europe and have spent my whole life dancing with The Royal Danish Ballet. I've danced every ballet in the book; Swan lake, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and about one hundred more and worked with countless of choreographers, instructors and teachers and I absolutely love sharing my knowledge and my anecdotes from my fortunate career. Come and dance with me!
Born in Denmark and classically trained at The Royal Danish Ballet, she has performed hundreds of performances, all over the world including Palais Garnier in Paris, Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, The Royal Opera House in Oman, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, Olso Opera House and the David Koch Theater in New York City. She has performed spectacular pieces such as Kylián’s Falling Angels, Balanchine’s Swan Lake, Bournonville’s Napoli and La Sylphide and Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away. Debuted as the Swan Queen in Balanchine’s Swan Lake at the Harris Theatre with Ballet Chicago. .
Benita understands how to teach passion and expression to others. She has the unique talent not only as a dancer herself but as a teacher to bring than on to her students. Very few teachers can do that.
To quote from Mozart in the jungle.
She dances/teaches with the blood.
You want to start learning ballet? Want to improve your techniques? Or just want to have a great workout? I would love to share my passion for ballet and all the knowledge I gained through my career. I believe ballet is demanding and hard but also it brings joy and beauty in your life. I make sure that my students are challenged but also having fun in my class. All ages/Levels welcome and of course lessons are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student.
I started dancing at the age of 7 in Japan. At the age of 17, I attended to Arts Educational school in England and at the age of 18, I moved to New York city to attend Joffrey Ballet school. At the age of 20, I was accepted to Dance Theatre of Harlem in NY and danced as a professional ballerina for about 6 years. Performed many principal roles and toured all over the US and overseas. After my dancing career, I have been teaching dancers of different ages and experiences, from pre-ballet to adults and from ...
Mayuko Shoka was born and raised in Gifu, Japan, where she started ballet training at Ballet studio K&M at age of 7 under Kazuko and Zlatko Mikulic. The main ballet style practiced was the Vaganova. At the age of 17, she moved to England to attend The Arts Educational School. Here she mostly practiced RAD ballet method and Cecchetti ballet technique and she got a Cecchetti teaching certificate. She also had exposure to tap, jazz, contemporary and modern dance forms while she was there. After a year, she moved to New York to continue her training at Joffrey Ballet School. At the age of 20, she was accepted to Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble under the director Arthur Mitchell, where she performed many principal roles in such as Joplin Dancers, New Bach, Concerto In F, South African Suite, Le Corsair, Nutcracker, and Glinka, among others. W
hile she was there, she toured all over the United States and overseas such as Bahamas and Jamaica. After moving to Seattle she became certified Yoga teacher by CorePower Yoga. While there, she taught Ballet and Yoga at Vam Studios School of Dance and took tap classes from Mark Mendonca to deepen the tap education. She recently moved to LA and she is very excited to join TakeLessons to share her passion for ballet and all of the knowledge she learned in her career. I believe that I am good at teaching young children, teenagers and also adults. When I was dancing professionally I was so focused on the techniques that I forgot how fun is and how much I loved dancing. Then after my career, I was able to approach dance from a more relaxed and fun-driven perspective and it made me realize that everybody should be having fun dancing, especially if not dancing professionally. Also, when I started dancing as a kid, I didn’t have “the ballerina body” (e.g. not flexible enough, closed hips, no adequate feet) so ballet did not come natural for me. I always had to work so much harder than the other girls in the studio to achieve the same results. Thanks to my hard work, the shape of my legs changed completely after many years. This struggle, to get a better dancer, taught me how hard ballet could be and made me understand more about the details of techniques and the steps necessary to perfectionate them. I am happy to share all the knowledge accumulated over the years to allow my students to improve their skills while still having fun.
Great, positive person, good instructor. I am excited to work with her.

I did yoga regularly with Mayuko when she lived in Seattle and it was an incredible experience. She's one of the best teachers I've ever had, just really sweet, fun, and knowledgeable. I knew very little about yoga, and I'm hardly fit or flexible, but I was able to learn so much from her!

We hired Ms. Mayuko to supplement my daughter’s rhythmic gymnastics training. Ms. Mayuko delivered rigorous ballet lessons in sequence to help build my daughter’s foundation in classical ballet, but to also improve her ability to accomplish a strict code of points for competition in rhythmic gymnastics. With Ms. Mayuko’s program, my daughter achieved her split leaps, extension, and turns in less than 6 months. My daughter was able to get the all-around gold title for her state and region, in large part to Ms. Mayuko’s training. She is strict and her lessons are rigorous, yet her genuine love for working with children is imminent and is what kept my daughter’s motivation for ballet and gym going. I recommend Ms. Mayuko to the highest degree.
Experienced former professional ballet dancer, and specializing in the beginner/intermediate ballet classes. Everyone is welcome from kids to adults. Lessons are customized to the needs/goals of the students.
I can teach beginners, starting from the basics to help you build a strong foundation of theory and technique. For advanced levels we would work on your technique, posture, and artistic expression. We can work on some dances/variations if you are preparing for a competition or a performance.

My name is Ana. Let me tell you briefly about myself. I began studying ballet full time at the age of 10 at the Cuban National Ballet School. After numerous years of classes and exams I became a professional ballet dancer with the Cuban Ballet. I toured around the world dancing different classics such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote and Cinderella. Later on I became a free-lance dancer and performed in Spain and Japan. I am here to help you achieve your dreams. I love ballet and would love to pass on the education that I received. Send me a message!
10/10 would dance again. Very kind and informative teacher.

Ana is an exceptionally gifted ballet teacher. She is the kind of teacher that strives to improve her students level and lift up their spirits. Her passion for ballet is infectious and my daughter is always looking forward to her next ballet lesson! She has made tremendous progress under Ana's guidance. I definitely recommend her!

My 8 year old daughter has now completed two private lessons with Ana. We both thrilled with Ana as a teacher and an individual. Ana is a professional dancer and she is simply wonderful. She is patient yet professional. Ana knows how to get the best out of your child and there has been immediate progress already. I highly recommend Ana if your child (or yourself) is seeking to improve their ballet skills.
