I have extensive experience as a stage actor and teach actors of all ages. I am proud to say that my students are almost always the best actors in their performances!

About Nancy
I believe in the extraordinary power of music to communicate, to inspire and, often, to heal. That belief inspires all my work.

My goal is to help you find the power to express express through singing your unique self. It doesn't matter whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's YOUR voice. It has its own sound and characteristics, its own particular beauty, and the world needs to hear you!

Whether you want to be a professional or audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to help you.

I'm a classically trained leading soprano who has had the great good fortune to sing masterpieces with such companies as the Caramoor Music Festival, Glim
merglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and the Manhattan School of Music.

But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, strict classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, yes, but also rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus or sound great on karaoke night.

Above all, the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.

*** Lesson Details ***

I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

*** Specialties ***

For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.

For all singers, I am also a superb acting coach!

Nancy is great to work with. She really engages our daughter. Our 10 year old is always happy after her lesson. Nancy also is a clear communicator both with parents and our daughter, so we always know what is going on, and how things are working.

Spent a lot of time going over my musical background and getting to know me in general. Made an assessment of my vocal ability, potential strengths and weaknesses that seemed accurate to me. Proposed a lesson plan to develop my singing that seemed reasonable and practical given my goals.

Love Sharon! My 13-year-old daughter takes voice lessons with her and Sharon is funny, positive, and very energetic.
My daughter has said she would not go to anyone else. Sharon is great with young students and getting the most out of them, especially if they’re a bit shy. We look forward to seeing her every week and I highly recommend her as an instructor.

I highly recommend Sharon as a piano instructor. She is very enthusiastic, encouraging and patient. Also her way of teaching is amazing. I am an adult beginner who had taken a few lessons with another instructor before. Though I did pick up some terminologies, I like the way Sharon goes back to basic and teach me the fundamentals without assuming me know it. These are essential for me to progress further.

I honestly don't know where to begin. Sharon West has helped me in so many ways! Not just vocally but in all aspects of performing and in life. I was a 13 year old little girl when I met Sharon for the first time. I immediately knew she was the person that was going to help me achieve my goals. I don't know how I got so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing, caring and loving vocal coach but I was totally blessed! Thank you, Sharon for all that you have done for me. Love you lots Sharon

In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. Mary is a lively, voluble person with enormous experience particularly in musical theater who enjoys working with students.
Initially and as the student moves along, Mary assesses talent and abilities and then continues to periodically reassess the learning in a manner that never ceases to amaze me. I have been working with Mary for six months and found her evaluations of my strengths and what I need to work on to be spot on every time.
What I esteem most is Mary's technical acumen, the techniques she learned from her teachers and mentors and her experience as a performer. Her keen ear and eye immediately pick out every nuance being sung that needs work. She answers questions about where "to go" in throat, mouth, tongue, torso, etc., demonstrating how to correctly produce the sounds, tones, and supported breathing in question. Voice teachers, of course, are supposed to do this. Mary does this superbly.
If you are seeking a teacher who knows her technique, especially in musical theater, I highly recommend Mary.

Hi Mary,
In my opinion, our session last night wasn't productive. My opinion is, you weren't really interested in teaching me. Out of the 60 minute session. I only did about 3 to 5 minutes of exercises. You spent 55 minutes talking about your past and present students, professional actors you know, show business, acting techniques and your accomplishments. You did talk about about the script that i would read and the emotion behind it, but that lead into more about your students and professional actors you know. it took you 30 minutes in your office to find that script, (which should have been done a head of time) then we went downstairs and another 25 minutes of talking before i could read it to you.

Towards the end when i finally spoke up about so much time being passed and nothing being done. You said you needed to see my personality so you can know where to start with me. That made no sense to me, how are you seeing my personality if you are the one mostly talking about your accomplishments and who you know and what you've done?
Why not pick a point and start there and see what my weak and strong points are? You also asked me the same questions you asked me on the phone, have you ever taken lessons before, why do you want to act, what do you do for work which to me just consumed more time.

What i found surprising and discouraging was when you asked me why would I take acting classes up here when there are some of the best acting schools in the world just an hour away in New York City? I wish you had said that to me over the phone before our meeting, I would reconsider taking lessons from you and just spend the extra money and go down to the city. If i were an instructor i would be grateful for anyone who sacrificed their time and money to come see me, and never ask why they chose me when there is better not that far away. With that said I have decided to cancel my remaining lessons with you please do not bill me any further.

Jason

PS Telling a person of color that they are a weird fit as a real estate agent in Croton N.Y, and would be a better fit in Brooklyn N.Y was discriminatory and offensive to me.

I have been studying theatre acting for years. I have been a Musical Theatre performer for years and I am still studying singing, acting and dancing. I am still young and know what it feels to want to better yourself everyday, so I can relate to most learning students. I put a lot of importance to voice training, technique and acting warm-ups.

Lehman College, Bachelors of Fine Arts, Graduate! I am a Musical Theatre Performer. I perform all the time and believe that warm-ups are a big importance when it comes to performing. I have studied, worked as an actress and a director and taught in Berlin, London and New York - both in theater and opera. I was the first person to ever be offered the Juilliard Opera directing Fellowship two years in a row (where I worked primarily with Postgraduate students) and have worked with actors and singers across the country as well as in several German A-houses. After studying a variety of acting methods over the years, I have developed my own method of approaching a character or an audition monologue/song, which encompasses the physical, emotional and intellectual in order to create an easily accessible three-dimensional person. I will not only help you apply said method, but also teach you the tools so you may access it on your own at any time. Finally, I have received critical acclaim as a young director, and - as a teacher - I have a track record of helping people get hired from major auditions.

About Ophelie
I am a professional stage director, who has worked in Germany, England and across the United States. I have worked with singers as well as actors, as a teacher, assistant director and director.

I graduated as an Associate of King’s College London with a degree in Philosophy and significant experience acting and directing for independent theater companies in London.

I then went on to work as an assistant director in major German opera houses, where I learned how to apply the same teaching and dierecting methods with singers.

At only 23 I was offered the Juilliard Opera Directing Fellowship - and I was the first person, to whom it was offered two years in a row. At Juilliard, I mostly worked with the few selected Postgraduate students.

I have considered accepting an adjunct teaching position, but chose to go on directing and tea
ching privately instead. My students have repeatedly gotten hired for auditions I coached them for (amongst other places at the Metropolitan Opera) and gotten great reviews for jobs I coached them on.

“I cannot recommend Ophelia Wolf any higher as an acting coach and stage director. I worked with her privately on staging all of my audition arias. Her genius is connecting your unique story to the character. She knows intuitively how to break down emotional/body tension to free up performance and discover your truth. She has a flexible formula for analyzing characters and making them immediately personal to you.
As a German native speaker, she prepared me for all of my audition trips to Germany. With her guidance in perfecting diction and conversational style, I gave a confident tour. I also sought out her method when giving a series of masterclasses on how to interpret characters.
We worked together right before my first audition for the Met, and I got the job! You’ll love working with this director who has experience working with the greatest opera houses in the world."

Felicity is amazing, and make no mistake, she is a brilliant actor AND screenwriter herself. I think that it's this combination that makes her such an effective teacher. She totally gets subtext, and she helps her students dig deep to understand where their character is coming from. When I was preparing to audition for a part in a play earlier this year, she helped me create an entire subtext and backstory, so that by the time I auditioned, I had already totally embodied my character. I nailed it, and I got the part. I definitely recommend Felicity to anyone, any age, looking for acting lessons, or who is already in a play, film, or TV production and needs nuanced fine-tuning. My approach to teaching and acting stem from a naturalistic approach and is sourced from various techniques. I guide students to find the joy in acting even in dramatic work. I am a longtime working professional actor and have been a Teaching Artist in NYC for well over a decade. I am a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, and can be seen on various Network and Cable shows as a Co and Guest Star. I like to tap into experiences that the student has had and help them develop their own ways to express and explore their emotions.

I worked professionally in film, on TV and on stage for years until I found representation. I discovered the joy in acting *and* auditioning and began to teach it through Acting Without an Agent™.

About Twinkle
I am a working professional actor, who has been teaching since the 80's. I think that acting is acting. Once you have a solid foundation, the difference between stage or scene is minor. I like to help my students find the most natural and seamless way to a character by using the text and various exercises. I find teaching and acting to be a tremendous joy and I love sharing that delight.

I am frequently in NYC for work and auditions and can come to you if you are not in the Beacon, NY area.

In the past year, I have done Co and guest starring roles on the following TV shows: MURPHY BROWN; GOTHAM; MADAM SECRETARY; LUKE CAGE; ELEMENTARY; THE OTHER TWO; and the upcoming "THE LOUDEST VOICE" on Showtime, with Russell Crowe. I have been in many National and regional commercials. I have done theatre at such prestigious venues as Woolly Mammoth
, Dorset Theatre Festival (Winner of the "Best Actress" award for VALLEY SONG) , and The Public Theatre, to name a few.

I began working as a professional actor and got my auditions and booked work without representation. My Acting Without an Agent™ technique still gets me in the room and I would love to share that knowledge as well.
