Learning to read can be challenging in English. Our language, while beautiful, has as many unique characteristics as do our people! Since I have a secondary English minor, I've had long experience in reading, teaching and interacting with many levels of students.

Difficulty in reading can often be simply a translation problem. When that glitch is narrowed in on, and taken apart, the magic of words opens up!

I had a college language placement exam looming, so I signed up for 10 lessons with Susan to help me review and prep for the exam. I ended up testing out of two semesters of college-level German, which was even better than I had hoped for! I couldn't have done it without Susan. She was fantastic at explaining the tricky subjects, like accusative vs. dative cases, and helped me rigorously review all of the material. Plus, learning with her was fun, and I looked forward to the lesson every week.

A love of reading is not always inherited, especially in this age of social media, gaming and such, but a passion for the written word can definitely be developed. The key is allowing students to read stories that interest them, as well as discussion along the way, with a teacher they connect with.

I have been teaching reading and writing for over a decade now, and it has been my experience that even kids who claim they don't enjoy reading just need the right tutor and material to have a positive change in perspective.

About Rico

For Parents of Children: As someone who has been teaching for over a decade I have found that one of the most effective teaching methods is through Reading Comprehension. Not only does the student develop a love for reading, but he or she also learns new vocabulary, writing skills, pronunciation, a

My two children have been taking reading and writing lessons from Teacher Rico for over two years now. My husband and I have been very pleased with the results, the kids being among the top of their class, being published in their school newspapers, a few awards in writing contests. Rico's help has been invaluable.

The SSATs can be overwhelming. 500-600 vocabulary words and an extensive list of math concepts to remember. Although standardized tests are terrible indicators of aptitude and intelligence, the unfortunate reality is that this is the way that private schools determines a child’s eligibility for acceptance. I’d love the opportunity to work with your kid and teach the skills, concepts, and techniques necessary to improve their SSAT score.

"With a few painless lessons, Chris was able to raise my son's ACT scores significantly. Most impressively, he taught him a few easy strategies for the reading section, which had been his weakest area, which resulted in a 34 on that section. We were very pleased - it was time and money well spent."

"Colin helped me through the last semester of IB Calculus. He would email me two days before each lesson so he was prepared with a relative lesson plan for our hour long weekly session of review. He even created a video explaining a topic I was stuck on and sent it to me after our weekly session. I wouldn’t have gotten an A in the last semester without him. Thanks Colin."

"Daniel is an interactive tutor who is very helpful with any calculus problems you have. He helped me study for my math test by going through problems step by step with me, which allowed me to understand the concepts at hand. He made sure that I actually understood the process by asking me questions, so it wasn’t only memorization but actual grasping of the way to solve problems. I definitely recommend Daniel to anyone who would like help with their calculus!"

"Irfan is an outstanding tutor that I highly recommend. In less than an hour, he had my son understanding the concepts of chemistry that were frustrating him. Even though we were in different time zones, Irfan made sure to accommodate our schedule. While I originally had doubts about the effectiveness of web tutoring, I can honestly state that Irfan made it effective by using screenshare. Irfan also went out of his to share web links that would help my son with the chemistry issues they were working on. Again, I would highly recommend Irfan if you are looking for a chemistry tutor! We will be using him again I am sure!"

"Lt. Colonel Rivera is the best instructor/tutor I have encountered in my four years of college grade academia. His mastery of finance and military history/philosophy has had a direct positive impact on my career path and education level that cannot be overstated. Lt. Colonel Rivera will be the wisest instructor you'll have the honor of learning under. He will turn your failing grades in mid semester to 90%+ final grades with the work ethic and educational adaptability found only in higher level military education. You -will- become a better human being just by conversing with him. His leadership has that impact upon everyone he encounters. With his educational tenacity and understanding of the material, your grades will improve and exceed your wildest expectations. I speak from experience as my failing grade in finance became a 91% and my other classes rose from 83s and 86s to 95s and 97s. You hire this tutor and you get not only that but a mentor and role model. Consider Lt. Colonel Rivera as a instructor if you're serious about your immediate and continued success in academics, life, and career choice."

"As a non-traditional student I was struggling with Gen Chem 2 early in the semester because I didn't have the fresh skillset my peers possessed from only being out of high school chemistry for a year or less. Dr. Alan helped simplify complex concepts which brought me up to speed and made sense of the fray, allowing me to go from a 70 at the the beginning of the semester to a high A by the end of the semester."
