Basic mathematical principals learned from elementary school to college levels. I ensure that all basic fundamentals are well observed and understood by the student.

About Jonathan
About

I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2019
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011

While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp its purpose and reason---whether its music or math.

Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

Meagan is very flexible and is a great teacher. She doesn't make the student feel self-conscious about answering wrong, She gently asks the student to explain how they came up with the answer and allows them to correct themselves. If the student doesn't realize their error during the explanation, she explains to the student wherein the equation they made an error. She also repeats the problem areas with the student until they have a full understanding of the process.

I sought Meagan out after my daughter came home with a failing grade in Algebra I. I am very happy with my selection, she is the perfect fit for my daughter. She is very flexible and I appreciate that she doesn't make my daughter feel like her lack of understanding of the subject matter makes her inadequate. I am going to continue hiring Meagan for the duration of the school year, my daughter really likes her and is learning far more than she is from her regular classroom environment.

I create “ah ha” moments for math students. Many students think they just aren’t good at math. Most often, they simply lack the skills needed to work through problems quickly. Sometimes they just need to “see” math in a different way. They give up. I can change their minds and give them back their confidence. From addition to trigonometry, I can help your child succeed at math. I’m a retired math teacher with more than 20 years experience teaching and tutoring students. I work together with parents and teachers to build a strong team to help your child create and build upon successes. I am an advocate for students. With the tools and skills they need, watch their frustration decrease, while their pride soars.

About M.
Over the past year, I have taken time to be a peer educator with the Education and Outreach at Arizona State University, while I have also enjoyed the demands of being a senior design student. Not only have these positions allowed me to mature greatly, they have also aided my inter-personal skills. Many years at work applying the principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry in engineering have given me a deep understanding of these concepts. I have gained the ability to communicate mathematical concepts to students, as shown by the success of my students.

Instead of just giving finished solutions to the student, my approach is to ask increasingly specific questions to help the student focus on the concept and figure out the answer. In this way, the student practices and learns successful methods for solving problems. Showing a student how to compute the height of a tree without having to directly measure it, for example, increases the students' interest and success in math.

I enjoy helping students perform challenging, detailed, and valuable work exceeding their expectations.
