My sewing curriculum is designed so that first time learners will feel motivated to keep on sewing. The first three projects are usually completed within the first 3-4 lessons. After learning how to operate the student's machine, together we will make a draw string bag, a skirt (for a doll, for a student or someone else) and a stuffed animal. These first three projects lay an important foundation; students learn basic and useful skills they will use over and over again as they begin to choose their own projects that we work on together.
I believe that if the student- whether a child or an adult- enjoys sewing and sees what they are capable of from the start, they will be more eager to learn more and take on new challenges.
Currently developing sewing worksheets for children.
About Melissa
I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.
After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is
My experience includes;
-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects.
-I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12.
-I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format.
-I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center
-I am a resident costumer for Sundog Theatre.
-I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy
-I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies
Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn students, but please inquire before booking. I have locations in 10306 and 10309 that can accommodate students if you don't wish to learn in home.
My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, four sewing machines, 2 professional mannequins, and a closet full of fabric and notions!

Students can expect a Systematic Approach to Sewing, what I fondly call the SASsy way. We will start with foundational topics like the Anatomy of the Sewing Machine, building on that foundation one skill at a time. I've learned that remaining motivated to sew often holds people back so I will also teach you how to plan out projects and how to build a sewing habit that helps you see consistent results and keeps you motivated to sew!
About Timpla
FEEDBACK FROM MY PREVIOUS STUDENTS:
"It was great! I learned so much about my sewing machine."
"Had a great time Timpla! I was able to hem my daughter's skirt and repair a shirt sleeve. Looking forward to next time."
"I definitely benefited from the class! Thanks so much!!!"
I LOVE helping my students conquer their "fear" of the sewing machine, which unleashes excitement about their potential to sew unique items for themselves and others.
I've been sewing since I was a young girl, learning from my grandmother.
My experience includes sewing women's and girl's apparel, home decor, and quilts. I decided to start teaching private and group lessons after receiving many requests from friends and acquaintances.
I look forward to helping you develop the

About LILY Q.
CloseBeginner-You will learn basic skills of hand and machine stitching, seams, darts, pleats, zippers, pouch, tote bag and build many more samples into a scrapbook.
Intermediate- Fabric dimension and behavior, cutting skills, bias binding, various necklines and making a skirt or blouse. Learn to make garment with commercial pattern.
Advanced-Make dress, skirt, pants or blouse with lining.
Note: Although students learn at different rates, the above results are expected, if taking lessons 2hours a week, for 5weeks for all levels.
About LILY
Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For six years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

About Kristina R.
CloseI don't remember learning how to sew, that's how long I've been sewing! My mother taught sewing classes when I was little and I just picked it up from her! Since then I have taught many children how to sew! And some adults, too! It's an awesome skill. I love sharing this past time with others.
