If you have felt like youtube videos don't give you enough guidance in folding Origami, I would be delighted to take you step by step taking things at your pace and level as we explore the craft of Origami together.

I was born in Japan and origami was something that came naturally to me as a child. The love of Origami was passed down to me from my Japanese Grandmother who decorated her room with all of her paper creations.

It's been in my blood and comes as second nature to me however I know how complex some of these folds can be and my goal as a teacher is to help anyone be able to fold anything, while throwing in stories from Japan and Origami trivia!

Kat is a thoughtful and gifted teacher, and is great with kids! She is teaching my 7 year old to sing, and play the ukulele. She has been such an inspiration to my daughter who had previously been frustrated and discouraged by taking lessons from two prior teachers, so much so my daughter wants to take up guitar and possibly songwriting in the future. My daughter always looks forward to lessons with Kat. I am also happy she practices and does her homework because she wants and chooses to do so, and not because I am bugging her about it! It's so refreshing and such a relief! Kat has a special way of connecting and encouraging my daughter to develop her passion to sing and play music. Thank you Kat! Keep up the great work!

Kelvin was an incredible teacher! He somehow made the very technical art of origami a bit easier to digest and do on our own from home. He was supportive and cheering us on, and his passion for origami was extremely evident. We can't wait to work with him again. Thanks, Kelvin!

My name is Ron. Last year my 10 y/o twins took weekly origami lessons from Haggit for a period of 6 months. They are both doing origami diligently since then, and proudly teach origamo to their classmates. Origami became a fun family activity in our house.
In march 2019 they invited their friends to celebrate an Origami birthday party. Haggit taught the guests how to fold several models. The children had a great time. They were all talking about their experience the following day at school. I highly recommend Haggit for teaching and leaading Origami parties

Ms. Qi is a very accessible and diligent teacher. My son can be difficult, but she found ways to quickly connect with him and get him to open up. She accommodated his need for assistance with his regular work, but encouraged us to "start again" with Chinese which is probably a good idea. Very much appreciate her experience and enthusiasm.

Private Origami Lessons Near You

Origami comes from the Japanese words, ori (folding) and kami (paper). In cultural context, origami refers to the Japanese art of paper folding, but modern usages reference any type of artistic paper folding, regardless of its culture of origin. In the practice of origami, the artist attempts to transform a flat square of paper into a completed sculpture, using specific sculpting and folding techniques alone.

A few basic types of folds, which range from beginner folds to more advanced, can be combined to create a seemingly endless amount of designs. While artistic origami uses paper, the principles of origami are used in engineering and all types of design. Origami has been used to create unique packaging, pop-up campers and trailers, and even satellites that cleverly unfold after being launched into space.

Paper's all you need for origami. The limited number of tools required makes it a cost-effective hobby to take up. Some purists prefer using no tools, but others use a flat surface, bone folders, and paper clips.

The Benefits of Learning Origami

Origami boosts brain health. Its constant use of spatial and mathematical reasoning, fine motor skills, memory, and concentration is a good workout for the brain. Once you've advanced to a skill level at which you're able to make your own designs, origami will also improve creativity.

These skills are not only beneficial to adults but prove highly positive for children, as they develop. Children who fold origami benefit from improved hand-eye coordination, sequencing skills, reasoning, and more. Plus, for children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, origami provides a healthy, educational, non-disruptive, brain-boosting way to keep their hands busy in school.

The Best Way to Learn Origami and What You'll Practice in Lessons

Sure, you can find lots of free origami lessons and video tutorials online, but the best way to learn the art of folding is with a private origami tutor. In private lessons, you'll have your teacher's undivided attention and receive the type of personalized instruction that simply isn't possible in a larger class or when reading instructions in a book. With immediate feedback, you'll improve quickly, while focusing on the types of origami that interest you most.

Plus, every private lesson is different! Teachers customize every class keeping in mind the student's goals, interests, existing knowledge, and preferred learning styles. For example, origami classes for kids differ greatly from origami lessons for adults in terms of course content and teaching methods. In private lessons, you'll stay motivated and interested while you learn at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Origami

If you're just getting started with origami, then beginner lessons are for you. In these classes, your origami teacher will introduce you to all the basic skills you need to start making origami. Your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to materials: origami paper and diagrams
  • Learn some basic folding techniques (mountain fold, valley fold, inside reverse fold, etc.)
  • Learn how to read origami diagrams and get started folding simple designs

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Origami

If you're familiar with the basics, but get stumped by more challenging types of origami folds, then intermediate lessons are right for you. In these classes, you'll study more complex techniques in order to produce increasingly difficult folds and designs. Your teacher might cover the following topics:

  • Practice increasingly difficult designs: dragons, boxes, roses, and more
  • Construct multi-part origami sculptures
  • Learn intermediate folding techniques (spread squash, open sink, closed sink, swivel, twist, and pentagon folds)

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Origami

Advanced origami lessons are intended for highly skilled folders. You'll have the opportunity to work with an origami expert to learn highly advanced folding techniques and even make your own designs. Topics covered in advanced lessons depend on the student's interests and goals, but your teacher might cover the following:

  • Create your own, original origami designs
  • Apply the principles of origami folding to different materials
  • Learn advanced techniques (unsink and closed unsink)
