About Cara
My experience tutoring ASL students began in 1994 when, ironically, I was one myself. As a Freshman at the University of Rochester, New York, I took an ASL class and fell in love with the language and culture. Consequently, I designed my own double major: ASL/Linguistics. The next four years were spent in immersion. The Deaf culture in Rochester provided me with an “abroad” opportunity without leaving the country. Once fluent I began tutoring college students, interpreting at the neighboring college (NTID) and often, was mistaken for one of the Deaf students. Post undergrad, I earned a Masters Degree in Deaf Education at Boston University so I could begin making our complicated language of reading and writing English accessible to young Deaf children. Over the course of my career I have taught ASL to all ages and levels of hearing student
s and English Literacy to all ages and levels of Deaf students. A love for children has recently led me to teach Baby/Toddler Sign classes using ASL.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

Chess may be an entertaining and challenging game to you. But Chess is like life.
In chess you need to learn know and understand the value and importance of each pieces, to know their strength and weakness, so that you will learn how to place them and maneuver them to the right spot at the right time where they will be most useful and productive to achieve your goal in the game or in life.

You need to think, calculate, strategize and be responsible and accountable for each move. Each move has a consequence that may result in a loss of a piece, loss of control of territory and loss of a game. Just like in life, if you don't think first and make a move, your move or action may lead to harmful effects to you, your friend or a family member. You have to be responsible and accountable for each move. You have to take care of each pieces
or member of your family.

In life as in Chess, you need to know who you are, your mental, psychological, physical and spiritual strength which you may all utilize during your growing period, from school to actual adult life. In chess as in life, you need to calculate your moves or actions, you need to have a plans or direction, and strategy. You need to learn who your chess opponents, classmates, teachers, brother, sisters and parent are, to understand them so that you will know how to relate with them in a game or life. With know knowledge, you will gain understanding and patience in a chess game or in life.

To win a chess game you need to learn how to make the right moves, to make the right moves you need knowledge, understanding of the degree of risk and benefits of options available to you, to take calculated risks, to be calm and courageous during difficult moments never losing confidence in yourself. If you fail or loss a game, Start all over again with the same enthusiasm. Be positive Always and you will win and be an achieve in life as well.

Let play and learn chess together.
