Chess is a great hobby for children and adults alike! I've been teaching chess for over a year now (through private lessons and at the Los Angeles Chess Club) and my lessons are as fun and engaging as they are educational. Whether this is your first time seeing a chess board in your whole life or if you've always admired the game from afar, I can help you develop your understanding of all aspects of the game.

About Jessica U.

Hi, I'm Jessica! I've been an avid writer since I was nine years old. After an elementary school project to write our own book, I fell in love with storytelling. That love has pushed me to write countless short stories, poems, and a few novels, as well as to perfect my craft through the attainment of a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing from CSULB. I have a great deal of experience in all departments of English (as well as how they relate to one another), from the fine details of grammar and composition to the more imaginative, personal art of literary analysis and creative writing. I am eager to share the tools and ideas that I’ve developed throughout my educational career with my students.
Creative writing has been my life's greatest passion. My entire childhood was spent reading and writing, determined to hone my English skills and carve a path for myself in the world of creative writing. I earned my B.A. with summa cum laude honors and I plan to attend graduate school to even further develop my knowledge of English. It saddens me that many young people find English boring or difficult due to stale, tired teaching methods and repetition of the same classic stories. Years of reading and analyzing many different types of work, from Young Adult novels to quirky short stories to even songs or movies, have given me the ability to analyze just about any written story. Finding my students' passions and intertwining them with the world of English studies allows them to develop their own passion for English.

Jessica’s enthusiasm for the game is palpable. She is very patient and gets one to start thinking about why one move makes more sense than another move. After my first lesson today, I’m thinking about attackers and defenders, and making sure my attackers outnumber the defenders.

Jessica is a very patient and knowledgeable chess teacher. She breaks things down so they’re easier to understand and less overwhelming. I highly recommend her as a teacher!
