Learning to read can be challenging in English. Our language, while beautiful, has as many unique characteristics as do our people! Since I have a secondary English minor, I've had long experience in reading, teaching and interacting with many levels of students.

Difficulty in reading can often be simply a translation problem. When that glitch is narrowed in on, and taken apart, the magic of words opens up!

About Marsha
Fall, fall, fall! Beautiful music, beautiful weather, beautiful trees that look like flowers for leaves! We are finishing Halloween pieces and starting Christmas ones! Master Class next month preparation, and a 100 day Music Challenge in full swing. I am currently full except for ONE slot Wed at 4:30, snatch it up quickly!

Goals: Since I am also a Life Coach, we really focus on how to accomplish our hopes and desires. We begin by weekly, then monthly and even a yearly goal.

Each week we also focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. Another is TECHNIQUE. Technique is the ability to have proper position, wrist-lifts and finger curve as well as Theoretic knowledge and application.

I started giving out lickable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet a
nd come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Perhaps you are reading this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano - upright; CD player; Music stands; Dozens of music books and lesson materials; flash cards; computer and music writing program; mic and mirror, syllabus.

*** Travel Equipment ***
No travel.

*** Specialties ***
Over the years I have dabbled in most methods, but finally come to use my own syllabus and musicianship. I can easily adapt to your favourite if that is your desire. I specialize in a total music education, not merely in learning notes. It is like looking in a mirror and only seeing eyes and skin. Music has many facets and we discover all of them.

Another specialty of mine is teaching both decoding and reading comprehension. As a professional tutor for 6 years, this was what I taught to most of my students. I use an imagery-based approach for both cases. For students seeking decoding skills, we use imagery and thorough toolkit of rules to boost readers' fluency and accuracy. For those focused on comprehension, I use imagery to begin to formulate basic visualization, which is the foundation of understanding. In both these areas, I've worked with students as young as 3 and as old as 72. And I am especially comfortable with students with special needs.

About Mariana
Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. I specialize in musical theatre, but have a thorough classical technique, as well as strong pop/rock/belt training.

My teaching style is highly energetic, and engages the development of the student's self-esteem and enjoyment, but is also focused on a foundational technique and strong work-ethic. I am extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments many of my students have made, from achieving principal parts in their school productions, to even getting cast in Broadway shows. I am determined to help every on
e of my students reach their greatest potentials.

As a tutor, my approach is no different. Trained in the highly specialized and effective Lindamood-Bell programs, I have an intuitive grasp of children's needs and levels. I teach decoding, math, and reading comprehension, and nurture students' self-esteem and independence in their learning.

*** Lesson Details ***
I give lessons in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. Each lesson will be personalized to the specific needs of the student.

We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

I teach students how to comprehend material. Specifically, I address skimming for particular kinds of information including the Purpose of the piece, what Terms are important, and how the Terms are used to fulfill the purpose. This approach is used very effectively to precise notes on the relevant information. From the notes, I teach students how to anticipate test questions and prepare for them.

About Christopher
I philosophize. It is what I do. This means I think about reality and happiness for a living. I can teach you about rationality—yes, there is such a thing. It is likely not what you think. I specialize in metaphilosophy. It is indeed philosophy about philosophy—one probably does not love one’s field more than this. Of this I focus on philosophical problems and solutions; in short, what questions are we trying to answer and to what extent may we answer them. I am also well trained in rationality, logic (propositional, mathematical, first-order predicate, modal, set theory, decision theory, and game theory), metaphysics (especially causation and mereology), ethical theory, and some epistemology. I have a good knowledge of the history of philosophy. Give me enough time to research, and I can tell you about pretty much anything. I
earned a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Missouri-Columbia, though I have a fair amount of education in other areas.

The reading lessons I provide are mostly centered on Test Prep objectives, e.g. GRE/SAT/ACT Reading Comprehension, etc.

(IMPORTANT: Please do NOT book any lessons without confirming with me if we have a match in schedule. I have other obligations besides tutoring so if you do not have a flexible schedule, I recommend other tutors that will match your budget and schedule.)

About Rod
(NOTE: Use the "Ask a Question" feature to confirm if we have a match in schedules and targets/expectations. In other words, DO NOT book any lessons with me unless we have a mutual understanding. Please read my profile below, the subject(s) you are interested in, my tutoring rates and minimum times very carefully. Thank you.)

I specialize in Test Prep (NYC Gifted & Talented Test, SHSAT, TACHS/HSPT/COOP, SSAT/ISEE, Common Core, Regents, college/graduate admissions tests [i.e. SAT/ACT, GRE/GMAT]) and tutor a number of academic subjects in Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Combinatorics), Statistics and Science (especially Physics) and K-12 English. I am particularly interested in Number Theory, Systems Engineering (Feedback Theory), Electronics (Analog Circuit Design) and Cosmology. In the soci
al sciences and in my work experience, I was practically exposed to Marketing and HR/Corporate Strategy. I have bachelor's and master's degrees in electronics engineering and business respectively and I enjoy tutoring both children and adults.

My interests also include gifted learning and STEM education. For example, I was successful in helping a 5-year old pass the NYC Gifted & Talented Test so he could enroll in any New York City school participating in the program.

I have several years experience working with various people from different backgrounds as an engineer (hardware+software) and as business developer in multinational companies and startups and this exposure has given me deeper and practical insights into personality and intelligence enabling me to adapt my teaching style to different needs and situations. Furthermore, I have learned from experience that there are three best tools for learning: practice, practice and more practice!

Tutoring for yourself or for your son/daughter is both an investment in time and money for a future return so please also plan accordingly. Now, I make sure that I do not totally depend on tutoring for income so I can maintain a certain level of quality. In other words, when there is a match in objective, budget and schedule, I am quite happy to be part of someone's educational journey. I consider it indeed a very special privelege to be able to help a student because it is my experience that effective education can be life-changing. Finally, I am aware that other tutors may be in a better position to meet your existing situation so we have to accept that and move on.

Tutoring Rate (IMPORTANT): I only do in-person tutoring because I believe effective learning is multi-dimensional and personal not flat and distant. My minimum lesson length is 1.5 hours for Academic subjects and 2.0 hours for Test Prep. My rates for children and teens will in principle be at least the same as adults because I actually invest more time and effort since I have to consider the feedback of at least 2 individuals (student+guardian) compared with an adult student. Different arrangements possible on a case-by-case basis. Please see each subject rate for more details.

When I am not tutoring, I am involved in projects related to technology, hospitality and service industries. I also enjoy cooking especially when I can make an ordinary dish into something extra-ordinary by adding that little "extra."

I initially reached out to Rod for Algebra 1 review because I felt that my daughter lacked a solid foundation in algebra. However, after a couple of sessions, we have decided to switch gears toward geometry with Rod’s recommendation. Throughout the geometry lessons, algebra practice was incorporated. I am happy that not only did Rod tailor his lessons to my daughter’s goals but also he gave her a lot of encouragement. My daughter found it extremely helpful that she got to explain and discuss with Rod, which made lessons interactive and real learning. Now going back to school, my daughter feels confident, thanks to Rod!

Rod worked with my daughter weekly for a couple of months leading up to the NYC state tests. With Rod's careful, concerted planning and diligence, my daughter's score went from 2.4 on the 7th grade Math state test, to a 2.8 in 8th grade, which equates to a move from below the 50th percentile, to between the 50th and 75th percentile. My daughter's in-school math instruction was chaotic and disjointed, and I attribute her improvement to Rod's intervention.

I asked Rod to work with my daughter on geometry to help her get ready for 9th grade. Rod explains each concept and its application very well. His lessons are appropriate for grade level but also challenging. I am particularly happy that my daughter is learning a broader approach to problem solving and critical thinking. As a scientist (PhD in chemistry) and a mother of a teenager, I appreciate Rod’s approach as it will provide a solid foundation for my daughter’s learning for many years to come. And he is always on time and gives me an overview of what was covered and what will be covered after each lesson. I highly recommend him.

If you've ever struggled to explain to your child why a word says what it does or is spelled the way it is, please join me for a one hour seminar in Phonics for Parents.

To many emerging readers, English can seem to be a frustrating jumble of exceptions. For nearly a century, many students have been taught grossly oversimplified phonics that generate thousands of exceptions. That approach works for some students, but many struggle - especially rule-following, logical, literal students. Indeed, nearly two thirds of 4th and 8th graders read below grade level.

Thankfully, English follows a deliciously rich and robust code with remarkable consistency - and in fact, fully 98% of English words are phonetically regular. The Phonics for Parents seminar is one hour of intensive instruction designed to give literate adults the tools needed to unlock the code and become a literacy superhero. You'll come away with insights that have left many wondering "how did I not know this before

Excellent
Contacted Cindy a few months ago to help me to put together a slide show, clean up my photos, To say that I'm technically inept would be a compliment. At my age (you don't want to know) just about all these new programs give me the shakes. I was using a rather basic photo program and she recommend I take a look at Adobe Lightroom. I was notified that it would look a bit intimidating and was pretty aggressive. That was an understatement. Well, it's been a couple months now and I think the Adobe LR program is absolutely terrific. I've become quite proficient and the program is so inclusive that I'm sure, despite how far I've come along, it will always be able to do what I need with the help of Cindy. She has been very responsive, knowledgeable, organized and very patient. My lessons will be ongoing (every two weeks) and will build upon a strong foundation. Highly recommend Cindy.

With a degree in English Literature, reading comprehension has been the most important aspect of my academic carreer. I know how to help you confidently navigate and come to a more complete and nuanced understanding of what you are reading, the main morals, motifs, and main purpose of each piece you read.

Our focus will of course be on coming to a complete and correct understanding of exactly what you are reading. Depending on the level you are at, our sessions will eventually inspire you to develop your own bold and unique opinions on everything that you read going forward.

About Nick
My name is Nick and I have been tutoring in writing since I was in high school. I love to work with students from grade school to grad school and help to make lasting adjustments that improve writing over the long term.

I became a Writing Consultant at St. John's University when in college where I worked with hundreds of students at every stage in the writing process. From brainstorming topics to write about, all the way down to making sure references have been correctly annotated, I covered it all. I can help you with any and every stage of the writing process that is giving you trouble and ensure that you are more equipped with strategies to help avoid any familiar difficulties going forward.

The experience I have in teaching writing coupled with a positive attitude and personality make for a pleasant and productive tutoring sessi
on that will alleviate the stress of your assignment, course, or subject matter and leave you feeling more confident in yourself and your ability to complete similar work in the future.

I genuinely want to and enjoy helping you become better and accomplish what you need to. I am excited to help out and hope to hear from you soon!
