With a bachelors degree in biology, I have studied a large majority of the natural sciences. I taught high school biology at Tippecanoe Valley High School and had the privilege to inspire the next generation of scientific minds. Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique from day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer's voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.
During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. I've taught a lot of chemistry. When in doubt, mole it out!
General chemistry is my forte... you know, the stuff you either learn in the class called "chemistry" in high school or maybe "general chemistry" in college. If you want to know why sodium pops, fizzles, and ignites as it skates across the surface of a beaker of water, then you're looking in the right place. BUT...If you're looking for an organic chemistry tutor, then I'm not your guy. Why? Because frankly, stereoisomers all look the same to me ;)

Who I am: I am a veteran physics, chemistry, engineering, and tech-ed teacher at the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. My Pennsylvania teaching certifications are in chemistry, physics, and technology education. I have been at the school since it opened its doors in 2009. Prior to teaching, I worked as a chemical engineer and a stock trader. I've performed on Broadway (yes THAT one in NYC), and I used to play the bassoon. I love to ski and play with my two children.

Why you should hire me: A book can teach you a lot of stuff, and if you are one of those few individuals who absorbs everything they see or read and become instant masters (think Neo learning Jiu Jitsu in the Matrix), then you don't need me, and really, you don't need anyone here. But if you're like most people, then some of the concepts might be a bit tricky and often a few helpful analogies and rephrasing of material is necessary. That's where I excel. If you struggle with concepts, I work to find ways to get the information into your mind in a way that might be more meaningful to you.
For example, I was teaching students about Newton's Third Law (action and reaction). I asked them if they had ever been driving down a highway and hit a bug. They answered yes, and then I asked them why the bug splattered instead of the windshield. Categorically, they gave me the incorrect answer of "well, the bug hit the windshield with more force, didn't it?" I didn't answer them, but instead I showed them a video clip of a drag race between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Bugatti Veyron. Both cars went 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Pretty impressive. I turned off the video and asked them the question about the bug again, and they seemed confused, so I nudged them a bit more. "How long did it take that Veyron to go from 0-60?" A student shouted out, "about 2.6 seconds!" Then I asked him, "and how long did it take that hovering insect to get from 0 to 60, which is how fast your car was going when you hit him?" Suddenly, light bulbs started to flicker... "that was instant, like milliseconds!" I smiled as others started weighing in. "Yeah, that bug went 0-60 in under a second, so its ACCELERATION was greater!" So I finally answered, "correct, the force of the bug hitting the windshield is EXACTLY the same (but in the other direction) as the force of the windshield hitting the bug. Using Newton's Second Law equation, F=ma, if the forces are equal, but the mass of the car is MUCH MUCH bigger than the mass of the bug, it's easy to see what happens...[huge differences in acceleration]. And that is what ultimately destroys the bug. It's like a phrase I once heard from a skydiver--it's not the fall that hurts. It's the sudden stop at the end that can kill ya."

PS... you might think that my online rates don't reflect the standard discount that many other tutors here give their students. That is true. While I don't shun technology, I also understand its limitations. Both of my specialties (chemistry and physics) involve a lot of equations and drawings... these are easily conveyed in short time when face to face. But when having to draw on a camera and/or type equations with lots of subscripts and superscripts, a lot of time is wasted. I don't discourage online help outright, but I don't recommend it as an initial session. That is why my prices display only a modest discount.

It seems that his teaching style is leading students to their own conclusions by giving them hints and guidance along the way including physical examples and practice work. Mr. Hank also is an incredibly patient teacher/tutor. He will use as many approaches as necessary to make sure that you will understand a topic.

As a bioengineer, chemistry is a cornerstone for so much of what I do on a daily basis. Whether you need help on electron configurations, balancing oxidation states, ionic equilibrium or anything in between, I've got you covered. It's easy to understand chemistry when you are learning it from an enthusiastic teacher with a deep understanding of the concepts, and that is precisely what I strive to be.
As a tutor, my goal is not to impress you with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress you by showing you how easily math and science concepts can come to you when you are presented the material the way *you* need to see and hear it. It's my guarantee to you that I will always strive to communicate the concepts effectively, listen to your questions with patience, and work with your unique way of learning to help you truly understand the material. Admittedly, I didn't discover my passion for math and science until years after high school. In fact, I was seemingly terrible at both. This, I later found, was mainly due to poor communication and poor presentation of the concepts from my high school teachers. Almost eight years later, a genuine curiosity induced me to seek out YouTube videos on various math and science topics, and upon finding the right videos, where the material was presented effectively, it was actually fun and very satisfying to learn. In fact, I found that the concepts came rather easily to me. It was a night and day difference from my high school experience.
At this point, it was a glaring reality to me that people simply do not learn effectively when they aren't being presented the material in a very clear and interesting manner (for some strange reason, this is especially a problem with physics teachers/professors). For example, understanding *why* acceleration has units of meters per second squared makes those units much easier to memorize than simply knowing "it just does." Knowing *why* the x-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola is -b/2a, and why it's useful to even know how to find the vertex, makes it worlds easier to memorize than being told "it just is." Very few people in the world can learn effectively just by hearing dry, seemingly random information. On the contrary, people tend to learn and remember information they deem valuable. Since this discovery, it has been a goal of mine to help others learn and enjoy math and science the same way I do. I accomplish this by being a clear communicator, and teaching math and science concepts with excitement and demonstrating how this knowledge is valuable.
A drive to teach others is not the only good thing to come from my latent discovery of my passion for STEM. After teaching myself algebra through YouTube videos and various books, I enrolled in community college and placed in trigonometry. After completing my general education with a 4.0, I transferred to UC Berkeley into the biomedical engineering program and the rest, as they say, is history. Amazing things can happen when you are able to learn effectively!

One of the wisest teachers once said that poor grades, study habits, and test scores are not life-threatening, but they are college-, job- , career-, and quality-of-life threatening. The most competitive students take a pro-active approaching to academics and tutoring while the least competitive take a reactive approach. All you need to do is watching the documentary 'Two Million Minutes' by Bob Compton to realize why students in other countries such as India and China surpass American peers in almost every subject, especially language (writing, grammar, etc.), math, science, and engineering-related subjects. They attend extra classes and tutoring from 6-7 AM in the morning to almost midnight.
In today's fast-paced and competitive job market, there is simply too much to lose by not investing now in your child's or your education. If a student is struggling, it makes sense to get him/her the help needed so that the time spent in school is worthwhile. Great grades and test scores can open doors that may have been previously closed and are also significant factors when determining scholarships, so investing time and effort now can pay off substantially in the future. Finally, let's not forget the most important part in all of this: the student. The confidence, knowledge, and skills that a student gains through effective tutoring can last a lifetime.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch. I scored in the 100th percentile on the ACS National Organic Chemistry Exam, scored in the 99th percentile on the MCAT, and have received A's in every science class I took in college as a cellular molecular biology major. I will be attending a Top 15 medical school in the fall.
Having dyslexia, dysgraphia, and auditory processing disorder taught me how to develop learning strategies that play to my strengths and avoid my weaknesses.
