About Azuri
Learning is one of my main pursuits. My name is Azuri and I have studied music for over a decade and have my degree in guitar performance from musicians institute. I've had the gift of studying many artistic crafts and spend my time today trying to further my own study, while sharing what I've learned with my students.

Art is one of the most important tools we have as a culture and contains in it a shared history, tradition and the keys to future ones. Whether it be through the primal qualities of music or the impulses of dance, the records of drawing or descriptions of writing, these are the tools for our expression. I have had the great fortune to study, in many different settings, a small piece of these traditions and sharing them is paramount in respect to receiving them. I love sharing knowledge and I hope to elevate yours as a st
udent.

Teaching Philosophy -

My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

I am a very relaxed, fun, and motivated teacher. I teach everything from classical to gospel to country to pop music. One thing you will find out from my lessons are you are "learning" rather than "memorizing". Lessons are structured to the students needs. I put my all into the lesson to the last minute or maybe run a minute over but at the end I know I've done my job!

I like to make it fun, so I encourage students to bring in music they would like to learn even if I have to simplify it a bit!

LadySonya is amazing!! I havent played the piano in probably over 10 years, and only played the piano by memorizing music, not truly learning. However, after just my first lesson with LadySonya, I was learning music theory and actually practiced a few songs playing by ear! I've learned more in this one session than I've learned after years of taking lessons. I cant wait to see how far I can go with this!

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. Carl has an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. ​Carl lives in Brookings, South Dakota. He enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

It was truly a pleasure meeting Concetta for my first ever violin lesson. It is difficult to learn anything at the age 40, specially a musical instrument, but she made it comfortable and easy to understand. She's extremely patient a key quality when teaching a subject such a music to anyone. I would say, give her teaching style a try and you won't regret it. Very knowledgeable indeed.

Very patient and beyond knowledgeable! I haven't done anything with TakeLessons before and my online class was hosted via skype so it was easy to get connected and learn at my own pace. I played piano for Brigham Young University's Dance Department for 7 years - sight reading or playing without any music for Ballet and Modern Dance classes. I think sight reading is one of the best piano skills to have because you can play whatever you want in a fraction of the time. So my goal is to get students there. Most people aren't looking to become concert pianists, and my goal isn't that. It's to help them play well enough to really enjoy it and be very satisfied with their progress.

My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I am currently writing music for video games.

Amy received her BM and BS from BYU in 2004, her MM from U of U in 2009, and is currently working on her Doctorate degree in music (Vocal Performance & Opera Directing). Although I'm only on a short break from playing piano with Amy due to motherhood and my children making it impossible to practice, I'm excited about returning as soon as I can! Amy has brought up my confidence in my playing as well as my technique. I can't wait to get back into piano lessons with her :-)

I've had several voice teachers and Amy has been by far the best! I've grown more as a vocalist with her as my teacher than anyone else! She explains things in ways that makes sense and the awkward exercises she has you do really work! Whether you're female or male and want to improve, she can help you. The question isn't whether or not she's a good teacher. She's a great teacher! The question is whether or not you're willing to put in the work.

If you want to learn the piano but don’t want to learn to hate music, I can help!
Most piano teachers work solely by the book, grilling you with rote memorization exercises and dry theory without application.
I like to have fun playing the piano and I think that’s how it should be. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take hard work and dedication to get good but nothing worth doing is ever easy.
We’ll get you sight reading, playing with both hands and all fingers together and independently, even composing and improvising in any and all genres, not just classical. Music needs to be understood intuitively and with the ears, not just with the eyes glued to a page!

Why should you take lessons from me?
Well, I started teaching myself piano at age 5. Started playing drums at 10. Went into school band at 11 and played tenor sax in concert and marching band. I picked up guitar at 12 and started my own gigging band and joined the school jazz band. That was the same year I got my first multi-track cassette recorder and have been producing demos and albums ever since. Over the years I've never stopped learning new instruments (just added banjo, flute, and ukulele), never stopped composing, and have gigged with 14+ bands across genres from alt/grunge, rock, to progressive metal, to funk/r&b, reggae, hip hop, industrial/electronic, etc...

Though I didn't attend an expensive university for music like many teachers, earning a BA in game Art/Design gives me a broader expertise from which to draw and a unique
perspective when it comes to music education. I've even been able to integrate my game design experience into my lesson plans with tailor-made Virtual Reality experiences! I think, "why shouldn't you take lessons from me?" would be a much more difficult question to answer.

Music is my life's purpose and I am committed to helping anyone and everyone I can to reach their musical potential. Whether that is as a hobby, an experience or fulfilling their own life's purpose.

From 2013-2015 I taught group music classes through Soli Encore in Orange County, CA, in violin, guitar and K-2 creative music (Orff-based instruction with singing, xylophone, hand percussion and flutophone). The last two years of that position I managed the entire program including hiring teachers, writing curriculum, and teaching classes myself. I had also consistently held private violin, viola, and guitar students. In both violin and viola I saw my students move up chairs in their orchestras and excel in local, district and state honor orchestras. I sent students to great schools for music like Orange County School of the Arts and Ne
w England Conservatory.

As for my performance career, I have committed to always being a member of an orchestra, band or performing group of some sort because it's my passion and I endeavor to teach from personal experience. Over my last ten years in SoCal I performed with several groups including the Blackbird Music Project, Montage Orchestra and Symphony Irvine. My last year concluded my position as Principal viola of the Dana Point Symphony for four seasons. I was in two bands during my college years. With Galanis I was a part of several Western U.S. tours that took us through California, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. I have had the privilege of working with artists such as violinist Anne Marie Calhoun, Jimmy Hopper, Andy Grammer and Stevie Nicks. Some of the larger productions I have been a part of include appearances on TV shows like Melrose Place and the Bachelorette, and performances for former President G.W. Bush and at the Governor's Ball for the Academy Awards.

My performance career continues to grow here on the East Coast, where I have lived since August 2015. I have been a member of the McLean Orchestra and have been added to rosters for the Alexandria Symphony, Arlington Philharmonic and Washington Sinfonietta. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Music in Viola Performance from Azusa Pacific University where I studied with Robert Becker, founder of the American String Quartet with a BM and MM in Viola Performance from Juilliard. I am now enrolled as a graduate assistant for my Master's of Music in Viola Performance at the University of Delaware.

When I'm not making music I'm running far, studying nutrition, cooking or spending time with my beloved friends and family!

Piano has so many challenges for beginners so I emphasize the basics early. A student wants to be able to continue advancing independently and needs to have a proper foundation of theory in order to do that.
Students may have talents in playing by ear and may have interest in making their own compositions, I am a teacher who will encourage these ambitions. Not forgetting, again, to continue pressing the study of theory.
Knowing how to hone in on a student's learning style has helped me keep individuals moving forward and keep the instruction exciting!
I love music and just want others to get to express themselves and find the joy in it that I do.

About Sharon
Music has been a central pulse to my entire life. I started taking piano lessons at age 5 and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the end of middle school I was writing songs on the piano and guitar and trying to get anyone I knew to play in a band with me.
In High School I finally did manage to play in a band that would play shows in the Greater Rochester Area in New York State. Once I hit age 18, I packed my bags and moved to San Diego where I continued working on my craft and started my new life.
I never stopped playing music, writing songs, and trying to find people to collaborate with. By the time I started my career as a hairstylist, I knew that I had to share my love and passion for music with others and endeavored to build a student schedule.
My first students, as an adult, were my future in-laws. Mother, father and si
ster in-law learned piano, guitar and music theory with me. My late father in-law had a left leg amputation and was blind. We taped rice on the back of the guitar neck so he would have a tactile reference to his frets. It felt so good to bring a dream of his to life and to prove to naysayers that anyone can play, even if the challenges are far greater than average.
Within a year, I had enough referrals to fill 2 days of the week with students. I have held 3 recitals and plan on having a holiday recital this year.
I will never stop sharing music with others and look forward to meeting any new students granted via this platform.

Excellent teacher! I haven't played my ukulele in years, she helped tune it and teached me a few more cords. I have guitar and piano lessons with her. She has lots of patience and encouragement when teaching. I highly recommend!!
