Calculus 1 exposure as a teacher at a community college

About Jeff

I got my first masters in Applied Math when I was 23. To stay current and refresh my knowledge I earned my second graduate master's degree in May of 2016 and finally the PhD in Mathematics in 2020. I spent 30+ years 'near Wall street' in the IT departments of the Financial Guaranty companies. Wh

I took my first math course with Professor Slepoi at Union County College back in Fall 2015. Professor Slepoi was very interested in math and often expressed his interest in the material. Up to now, I still remember how passionate he is about math and as an Engineering Student, I began to realize why math is so important. His passion for math translated to me the urge to dig deeper into math material and has made me pursue a minor in applied mathematics.

I met Jeff Slepoi at Montclair University where both of us were graduate students at the Mathematics Department. We often took the same classes at the same time with Jeff helping me on my way. He was always willing to help being
both a capable mathematician and a great pedagogue. His grasp of the material was consistently nothing short of remarkable. In the classroom his questions made our professors and classmates penetrate the covered topics even deeper, shedding light on their hidden aspects. Often I was under the impression that he could do a better job teaching these classes than our professors. Both a strong mathematician and a pleasant person to work with Jeff seems to me a perfect teacher who can give a lot to his students. I can highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning mathematics.

As an engineer, I use calculus on a daily basis to solve problems, and this includes multi-variable and vector calculus. Taking a calculus course and knowing the steps to solve a derivative or integral is one thing, but applying calculus concepts to problems in engineering and physics (i.e. biomechanics or fluid mechanics) is the true mark of understanding calculus - something I've learned how to do over many years of applying what I learned in my calculus courses. Sure, calculus can be a challenging subject at times, but with a focus on geometric representations, attaining a solid understanding of the concepts is well within reach, and that is the way I approach the subject with my students. For example, I don't just show you how to analytically solve an integral, I show you what an integral is, and what the solution means. When you understand calculus on this level, you'll be able to work through any of the curve ball questions your teacher might throw in on an exam.

High school math can be confusing if you don't understand everything before you leave class. Dr Dawn made a pretty quick impact on my sons understanding of geometry, understanding when to use the right methods and talking through word problems to make sure he knew what to solve. Definitely recommend!

"I was struggling with calculus 1 at SMC and felt very intimidated before Daniel came along. He helped me understand what calculus was all about and always explained new concepts clearly. Daniel went above and beyond his duties and was always on time. I ended up with an A and would highly recommend Daniel to any student with math needs. "

"Colin helped me through the last semester of IB Calculus. He would email me two days before each lesson so he was prepared with a relative lesson plan for our hour long weekly session of review. He even created a video explaining a topic I was stuck on and sent it to me after our weekly session. I wouldn’t have gotten an A in the last semester without him. Thanks Colin."

"I'm happy to say I found Colin for help with my calculus 1 class. I was doing okay from the beginning, but I felt like I was lacking the depth of understanding of some core algebra concepts and wanted to get solid on them before the class got more challenging (integration), as I was striving for an A in the class. Colin was a wizard at honing in on my weak points and he did an excellent job of really breaking things down and honestly, presenting concepts in more tangible ways than did any of my algebra teachers. I used the principles I learned from my sessions with Colin to get me through some challenging exam problems, and I'm proud to say that I ended up with a 97% in the class overall!"

How to Score a 5 on the AP Calculus Test

Getting ready to take the AP Calculus test? Brush up on these study tips from Olympia, WA tutor Tali H...   The AP Calculus exam is rumored to be one of the harder AP tests - especially for those of us who math doesn't come easily to. The test takes three hours and 15 minutes, and has 45 multiple-choice questions and six short-answer questions. Both types have a non-calculator part and a calculator part. Even though it sounds daunting, with some determination and productive studying, …
