I'm usually a horrible mathematics student but this semester I was taking calculus which is daunting on its own even for students who have been taking mathematics. I have had a 5 year gap from my studies and Varna has been excellent, she helped me work my way up from an F to an A!!! I would recommend her for ALL my future mathematics classes.

#### About Amadou C.

CloseCalculus is the climax of all of the mathematics you've been learning from Kindergarten through college; I take that into account when tutoring calculus, as it is deeply rooted in the concepts that you have learned in your past math classes, and it has a direct relationship with pre-calculus, trigonometry and Algebra II. I believe that calculus has unfairly been branded 'the most difficult mathematical subject' simply because most people fail to understand it's prerequisites. I dispel the phobia of calculus by seizing every opportunity to relate its hard parts to the basic concepts in mathematics (that we understand better) that define it. For example: I make compelling analogies using easier concepts in algebra, such as evaluating expressions, in order to facilitate the learning process during your introduction to limits and continuity. Allow me to mollify your acquisition of knowledge in calculus, and endorse your effort to 'chastise calculus'.

I have lived in over 20 countries, which allowed me to speak several languages, and which permitted me to maintain my patience, élan and spirit of enthusiasm when dealing with even the most extreme personalities. I have solid background in both math and the natural sciences, as I have consistently maintained a 4.0 G.P.A since high school. I am now studying mechanical engineering at IIT, and I have gotten 5s in all of my AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Biology exams. I have also been the winner of many STEM-related competitions, through my demonstrating of exemplary leadership qualities and through my brainstorming of blue-sky ideas. I am also a "Mental-Math" practitioner, reflexologist and guitarist. I believe that everyone has potential; however potential is worthless unless put in motion. And experts like me value ourselves in our abilities to give students that push, that jolt of energy that galvanizes them into pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps, allowing them to achieve academic excellence.

#### About Colin S.

CloseAs an engineer, I use calculus on a daily basis to solve problems, and this includes multi-variable and vector calculus. Taking a calculus course and knowing the steps to solve a derivative or integral is one thing, but applying calculus concepts to problems in engineering and physics (i.e. biomechanics or fluid mechanics) is the true mark of understanding calculus - something I've learned how to do over many years of applying what I learned in my calculus courses. Sure, calculus can be a challenging subject at times, but with a focus on geometric representations, attaining a solid understanding of the concepts is well within reach, and that is the way I approach the subject with my students. For example, I don't just show you how to analytically solve an integral, I show you what an integral is, and what the solution means. When you understand calculus on this level, you'll be able to work through any of the curve ball questions your teacher might throw in on an exam.

##### About Colin

As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress my students by showing them how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my foundation level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.

My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. I hope this brief explanation of my qualifications and teaching style has provided a clear image of what you can expect from me as your tutor. I am eager to hear from you and help you succeed in your academic goals!

Last time I studied math was 20+ years. I am 40 years old and about to finish my second degree CRJ, and like many others I left math class at the end. Taking the math prep test (which I failed) placed me almost in kindergarten..Lol! and I knew I needed help to re-learn math. I am so happy Colin answered my request (I sent 15 requests, and only 2 teachers answered). I wanted to start eating the study guide provided by CSN and just focus on the topics, but Colin wanted to show me the "why we have numbers, type of numbers, etc" definitely I wanted to fly before I could walk, and I am so grateful he had a different plan............because IT MAKE SENSE!

I mentioned I prefered to have a lobotomy (siks!) instead of facing math in my 40's because I never had a chance to understand math, I just digested the fact I was going to fail and obtain an "s" for grade. I am looking forward to like, learn, and comprehend math with Colin's help so I can graduate in December 2018.

Thanks Colin :)

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

Whether you want to catch up with your current math course, get ahead and learn more advanced math, or aiming to ace your SAT/ACT I'd be happy to help. What I enjoy most is to have a friendly, peer relationship with students rather than being seen as just a tutor so you can expect to have fun while learning. However, what is most important to me is not l

Some might call me a "math nerd" (to which I take absolutely no offense) but I have other interests as well. Most recently I've taken up golf but I love playing any sport with friends. I also watch nature documentaries and comedies. And of course I also love videogames (Overwatch, COD, FIFA) as well as boardgames. To some parents these might seem like useless facts but as an experienced teacher I can tell you that connecting with students on unrelated topics has an invaluable effect on the student-teacher relationship and will make for a smoother, unfiltered learning atmosphere. Not to mention it's much more exciting to refer to a sports analogy for a word problem rather than the unrelatable problems people are unfortunately used to ("person A buys x ft of fence...").
