I am in New York City and accepting new students as well as reconnecting with anyone who wants to return. I have two graduate degrees: one in Music and the other in Dance and Theater studies. My undergraduate degree is from The Juilliard School, in Dance.
I've taught children and grown ups for many years. I have a strong performing career and love the way teaching keeps me in a giving and learning place.
*** Lesson Details *** With beginning students I am very laid back and patient and believe strongly that in the play of games and experiments technique will develop and manifest. As the student becomes more advanced I become more demanding as do the materials.
As an Acting teacher I have the capacity to take students along all the way to professional and beyond. I'm a member of the Actors Studio, the performing unions and ha
ve studied since childhood at ACT and then all over the world including The National in London.
For Dance, I have a wide knowledge and can teach several forms as well as history and materials. I also teach Ballet and many forms of Modern Dance. I adore teaching dance composition. To help a dance student make their own dances is very fulfilling. I also teach choreography or composition. One of the aspects of dance composition that has recently captivated me is the composing of sound and music for the dance that is also being made. Using software, we can explore electroacoustic as well as language and text collage as sound score for your dance. It is super fun!!!
For the Visual Arts I teach Abstract Painting as well as Installation and Performance Art. *** Studio Equipment *** I have supplies and space. Visual Art students need to contribute to materials by finding or purchasing whatever they like and adding to the mix. My students are welcome to use what I have here and I am always adding materials. Many people throw away materials that are perfectly good for art making so keep your eyes open and you'll find all kinds of good things. Visual Art students need to book a 2 hour minimum and I will lower the price if you just let me know you need it.
My fees: I start at a higher fee and after you've been a regular student we can lower the fee for you if you need.
*** Travel Equipment *** just a space to work in - we can create a work space out of any space.
*** Specialties *** In dance I teach classical ballet principles for beginners or those who are returning and want to work carefully and privately. I teach from the tradition of Alfredo Corvino's principles of relationship to organic forms and structures for sound development. I studied with Mr Corvino for years and continue to study with Ernesta Corvino. For acting I teach a combination of classical acting technique with American sense memory and relaxation skills. I am well versed in the teachings of Lee Strasberg and then spent time in London to 'fill in the cracks' of my training with analytical skills as well as the various european influences that the Royal National embrace. I teach creative discovery in combination with classical devices so the student can discover their own artistry while learning actual classical devices for accomplishing specific goals.

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).
Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.
Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.
OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

CANCELLATION: 48 hour lesson cancellation policy and emergencies (determined by Rachel) are handled on a case by case basis. All students (or their parents/guardian if under 18) who have scheduled vacations and other activities (meetings, parties, school shows, concerts, rehearsals...etc) that interfere with the student’s regularly scheduled lesson time, need to contact Rachel as soon as the vacation/other activity is scheduled but no later than two weeks in advanced before their missed regularly scheduled lesson to prevent from forfeiting the lesson.
MAKE-UPS: Make-Up lessons will be scheduled if time allows. No Make-Up lesson or class will be given to ‘no shows’ or “late cancellation”, and no extra time to extend their lesson will be given to students who are late to their lesson or class. If there is ever a time Rachel is running late, extra time will be given to make the lesson a full 60 minutes. If Rachel needs to reschedule, a Make-Up lesson will be scheduled as close to the same week as possible. Make-Up lessons are scheduled at Rachel’s discretion.
ONLINE LESSONS FOR IN-PERSON LESSON CLIENTS: In the event that the student is sick but still would like their lesson, an online lesson will be scheduled instead. Students can NOT come to their in person lesson sick, coughing, sneezing, with a runny nose, cold, flu, allergies, fever, etc. (This is to make sure no germs will be spread).
An online lesson will also be scheduled if there is bad weather, if a student is having car trouble, or any other reason for the student not being able to physically get to Rachel’s private studio during their normally scheduled lesson time. Online lessons are conducted through Classroom, FaceTime, Google, Hangouts, or Skype.
SCHEDULE: Lessons are weekly, on the same time/day of the week unless we have rescheduled or we have discussed in writing another lesson plan. If the student’s lesson falls on a holiday, we will either reschedule or if no other day is available, resume the following week.
LATENESS: If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.
SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave. Of course there will be times when the parent will be invited back in at the end of some of the lesson to showcase progress.
COMMUNICATION: Due to Rachel's normally scheduling students one right after another without breaks, being in the recording studio, performing, or being on set, the best way to contact her is through text AND email. Please ALWAYS leave messages when calling Rachel with your name, contact info, AND the reason you are calling. Please be specific. Thank you!
"I try to be as fair as possible to both parties when it comes to cancellations, rescheduling, lateness, and make ups. Have a concern or question? Just talk with me. I'm all about communication!" - Rachel
Racheal did a wonderful job helping my daughter with her stage presence.
January 29, 2018
My 9 yr. old daughter received singing lessons with Rachel. Rachel was SO wonderful, patient, and creative with every session with her. She was constantly coming up with different ways to keep her engaged and was always reassuring her to increase her confidence. She gave great constructive feedback on how my daughter was doing and what she can work on to improve. I give her 5 stars! Thanks so much, Rachel!

Overall, very impressed. She is direct and doesn't tell you something you want to hear. Her evaluation process is well rounded and planned. She puts together a great curriculum to know what to expect in the coming lessons. Very easy going person and makes you feel completely comfortable at the initial lessons.
I have been teaching and coaching actors for 20 years. My students work professionally on stage, TV and film. Within the first few lessons, you will understand how to create a character. Soon, you will have the skills to book a role. I specialize in method acting, but draw upon my experience at The Second City (improvisation) in Chicago and other training I have had. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels; I can't wait to meet you!
Are you working on a part for a play or film and need assistance? If you are new to acting, I can teach you what it takes to be an actor and how to bring a character to life. Do you need to prepare for an audition? Do you want to learn about the business of acting? Script analysis? I can help.
I can help with your audition for performing arts high schools. My students have gotten into the schools of their choice.
If you have training or are a working actor, I can help take you to the next level.
I am a working actor, published playwright and award winning filmmaker. I graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where I majored in drama. I taught Method Acting, Acting for Camera, Improvisation as well as other classes at The Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York. My
students, both at the Institute and from private coaching, have appeared in independent stage and film productions, TV shows, commercials and Hollywood films.
Acting is the art of bringing a character to life. I use the Lee Strasberg Method, my original exercises and a fun and serious demeanor to help actors express themselves as artists and gain the confidence and skills they need in order to book acting jobs.
My book, "The Young Actor's Handbook", is published by Applause Theatre and Cinema Books. "The Young Actor's Handbook" ignites the beginning actor's creative soul with acting exercises, acting theory, writing exercises and insight into what it means to be an actor. This is a pragmatic manual that guides and informs the young actor, beginning actor, novice acting teacher or anyone who wants to understand acting.
"Jeremy Kruse's book, "The Young Actor’s Handbook", leads the young actor on the correct path. Jeremy is an experienced acting teacher who has broken down acting in an academic way while nurturing the soul of the actor. He understands the emotional aspects of good acting. I commend Jeremy and believe he has accomplished quite a feat in writing "The Young Actors Handbook." - Vincent D'Onofrio

Today what's the first lesson for my two girls with Carolyn. All I can say but the lesson was absolutely amazing my girls came out extremely inspired with lots of exciting homework to do they couldn't wait to show me what they've learned and couldn't wait to start practicing Carolyn was everything we were hoping for and a lot more. I have no doubts that would have made the best choice who could possibly make. My girls can't wait for their next lesson.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏👏👏👏

Great first time tapping at 72, Carolyn was great

Carolyn was very helpful! I’m looking forward to our next session.
I will first figure out what your goals are for the theater. Then, depending on your level, we will work on everything from breath to keeping each performance interesting and engaging. Expect to be challenged, to ask questions, and to dive deeper into the character that you are trying to explore. Also expect to learn how to work the stage and the basic skills needed to succeed on stage, which includes actor feedback as well as technical feedback such as "cheating out" and "not upstaging yourself."
My name is Kyla and I am currently a working actress and substitute teacher. I am on a webseries that just won a pilot competition, I just wrapped a play and start rehearsals for another one in June, and I have done a number of other live shows, short films, and webseries. I have taught theater, I substitute teach, currently, and I have babysat and tutored. I am also an alumni of the University of Southern California (BA) - one of the top universities in the US with one of the best theater (and film) schools! I love teaching, especially the arts, and I love to help someone understand something better and to feel more confidently about a subject or skill. I am excited to meet you all and get started!
The teacher was able to discern my exact needs, and then focus on those, and create in-the-moment scenes to energize my abilities as well as stimulate my own ideas in the directions necessary for my development.

Although Kyla is very nice and I could see her being a good acting teacher there were a-lot of issues. Late almost every-time and often seemed frazzled or caught off guard for my lesson. She was helpful with her acting technics for the first couple of lessons once we got into it, but then I took a week off for a vacation. She bumped the prices double the cost and did not inform me as a student. When I came back and was ready to purchase my next set, that we had already discussed a date and time, I noticed the price increase and questioned her. It was difficult for me to understand why she did not inform her current students of a price increase (and a big one at that). I was very clear with her in pervious lessons where I stood financially and that this was an investment already. Although she isn't an "expensive" teacher being a college student made this transition difficult. I was able to look past some of the other issues but the miscommunication between students was a NO WAY for me. Unfortunately, although she has potential as a good teacher she did not handle my lessons professionally.
Acting is such a broad term! What are your goals? Do you want to be in films? Do you want to do Shakespeare? Do you want to be in a sit com? Depending upon what your interests are and where you want to go, we will build a plan together. My philosophy on acting techniques is that they are tools to help you, not tests you pass if you're a good actor and fail if you're a bad one. Different techniques work for different people and it is our job to find out what inspires you.
I've worked as a professional actor for many years, performed on Broadway, have my MFA in Performing Arts, and my BA in Arts and Education. I was an assistant director to Tony-winner Sharon Ott and have written and produced my own work. I have experience in both stage and camera acting, which have specific technical differences, but are both a lot of fun once you get used to the medium. Audition technique, preparing monologues, and creating promotional materials are also things I can help with. Anyone who wants to ...
My approach is both supportive and pragmatic, based on where each individual's skill set is right now and what your specific goals are. I've had the benefit of both formal instruction as well as a decade in the "school of hard knocks." Climbing up the ladder to earn my Equity Card on a Production Contact taught me a lot and I believe gave me a nuanced perspective as a performer.
Over 95% of my career is from attending open calls, including finding representation and my Broadway debut.
I continue to audition for film, television, and theatre, as well as perform in concerts and other venues. I write and produce my own work and am currently signed with Roth and Associates East.
A-mazing! She’s an awesome mentor! Her approach to singing is brilliant in the sense that she helps you explore yourself, your strengths and areas you could work on to improve. She helps you find and utilize your voice in a way that makes a unique artist. She digs in right to the foundation of singing (vocals) and performing. I am glad to have found her! And to add up, I never had a dull moment with her with her sense of humor and caring approach!

Rebecca is wonderful at helping my daughter learn better public speaking skills.
July 5, 2019
Rebecca immediately made my granddaughter comfortable. Rebecca is a sweet, charming woman who, I can see, works very well with both children and adults. She is extremely knowledgeable and knows how to make people feel good about themselves.
"I know nothing about acting! Ian was very kind and patient. I like to think I’m not quite so bad now! LOL"
"To be honest I've never acted a day in my life before. Tamika was absolutely wonderful in helping me calm my (obvuously) nervous self, and worked with wha
t I naturally brought to the stage and highlighted my own attributes. By the time I had opening night, I felt more comfortable than presenting to a bunch of investors (which is my day job). Thank you again Tamika, for really helping me develop skills and traits for the acting stage even I didn't know I had in me! I loom forward to working with you again soon!"
"Natalie is awesome! She has been working with my daughter for several months, during which my daughter has grown in skill level, confidence, and passion f
or acting. Natalie is extremely knowledgeable, talented, articulate, and caring. We just love her and look forward to Continuing lessons with her!"
"Natalie was such a wonderful help in preparing monologues for my college auditions! I didn’t have much experience in auditioning but she helped me gain co
nfidence in the audition room. She even came to my Chicago audition to cheer me on! Thanks to her I got in to my top choice theater school!"
"Great first lesson!"
"I was recently in a play titled “Why Does It Hurt So Bad?” with Tamika as an Artist Development teacher. She was extremely helpful when it came to knowing
how to project your voice, emoting and becoming the character that you are portraying. Tamika was very professional and she always helped wherever she could. Tamika always gave great advice and how you can improve your craft as an actor. Everyone in the play took note of what Tamika was saying and applied it in the next rehearsal, getting better and better every time. This is the reason why the play was so successful. I will definitely keep in contact with her to keep perfecting my craft and to see if there’s a way that I can take acting lessons from her. Thank you so much Tamika. You’re AWESOME and so TALENTED!"
"Dalia is excellent at working with anyone. She will meet you where you are and together you can find the journey of the scene, monologue, play. Dalia uses
friendly language fabulously to describe highly complicated subjects. Dalia is great- I highly recommend"
"I really enjoyed my time with Kelsey. She seems to have a true love of what she is doing. she made me feel comfortable immediately."
