A Favorable Place for Singing - Kansas City!

By Thomas G. - Kansas City Singing Teacher

So you want to sing opera, in a Broadway show or a professional chorus? You'll find those opportunities 'up-to-date' in Kansas City! My name is Thomas, and I teach piano and singing lessons in Kansas City. I've just accepted a contract for "Carmen" at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, my 93rd show! I also serve as a section leader in the Trinity Choir of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, which tours to the British Isles every three years! As a member of the Trinity Choir, I've been able to sing in France, Italy, Austria, Ireland, Scotland and, of course, England!

Students looking to take singing lessons in Kansas City come to me to prepare for auditions, work on roles, as well as improving singing technique. So, if you’re looking to take singing lessons in Kansas City, check out some tips below on things to do and see to supplement your lessons in this favorable place for singing!

Kansas City is not just famous for its barbecue, it is renowned as an up-and-coming vibrant place for the arts. With the new Kauffman Center, Music Hall, Sprint Center, Crossroads District for the Arts, and First Fridays, the number of performance venues for your talent is incredible. Most cathedrals and larger churches employ section leaders. These types of community centers are great places to start, where you can meet local singers who know the scene and are active in other organizations. These singers are knowledgeable guides to auditioning and performing in the many organizations available to you in Kansas City. Larger churches also feature their own concert series and recitals, which give you opportunities to perform.

Additionally, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is an arts presenter and hosts the annual BACHATHON, a five hour extravaganza of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, held on the Sunday closest to Bach's birthday every year. Check out its website here: http://www.kcago.com/bachathon.html

The number of Broadway theater opportunities in Kansas City is staggering - I count at least 15 companies where you can audition and perform, and another 10 performing choral groups! A partial list of theaters would include: The Kansas City Starlight Theater, The Barn Players, The Theatre in the Park, Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, The Coterie, Musical Theater Heritage, Spinning Tree Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre (all produce Broadway musicals) and the Unicorn Theatre (off-Broadway musicals). Plus, there are many college and university group performances to choose from. Check out the websites below: www.kcstarlight.com www.thebarnplayers.org www.theatreinthepark.org www.metkc.org www.thecoterie.org http://www.musicaltheaterheritage.com/ http://spinningtreetheatre.com/ www.kcrep.org www.unicorntheatre.org

Professional and semi-professional choral groups include the Grammy award-winning Kansas City Chorale, William Baker Festival Singers, Kansas City Symphony Chorus, Heartland Men's Chorus, Kansas City Women's Chorus, Kansas City Men's Chorus, City of Fountains Chorus, Kantorei of Kansas City, Octarium, Te Deum, and Musica Vocale. You can find web links to most of the above (just Google them!). Whether you are a beginner, an amateur, a semi-professional or a professional singer, there is a performance venue waiting for you in Kansas City!

It is my pleasure to work with singers in the Kansas City metropolitan area!

He may be good if you want to sing opera. I just didn't connect with him and his 'Style' of teaching. I was looking for more current music and that was where a very large disconnect was.

Right off the bat I could tell that my daughter will flourish with Dr. G. He is very encouraging while simultaneously effective at improving a weak nuance of her current skill set without making it feel like a negative critique. She is very excited to see what he can help her accomplish.

Regardless of your experience or age, singing is a wonderful expressive and educational tool. My extensive background in singing and wellness training allows me to teach students in a healthy and exciting way.

About Zachary
Dear Students and Parents:

My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich my immediate community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building strong connections with my students at absolutely any level. My personal musical performing experiences span opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and R&B. I am so excited to share my knowledge and passion for singing with you, as well as any other subject
we find to explore! As of February 2013, I am also available through TakeLessons' online instruction program! Please find more information below and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

Zachary B.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I am always happy to hear from new students!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open area between the living room and the dining room, seating available, piano to accompany the voice lesson, garage/driveway/street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I prefer for my students to have a keyboard or piano, and if possible, a music stand. We can always make a situation work if the student does not have access to these tools. I provide music, pencils, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I am an opera singer, and specialize in classical singing. However, I apply similar vocal technique to all genres of music, and focus on breathing technique, body and energy awareness, and discuss a holistic approach to singing with all students.

Every lesson I teach is tailored to the individual needs of the singer, both vocally and artistically. Students will receive a vocal workout specific to their voice type and vocal issues. Additionally, I offer students training for auditions, songwriting, recording technique, and performances. Past students h ave gone on to perform on broadway, national tours and American Idol.

About Emily
Emily has been working professionally for over 15 years and teaching for nearly as long. Professionally, she has worked with labels like Universal and Sony, and with artists like Katy Perry and Billy Joel. Former students have gone on to perform on Broadway, national tours and American Idol.

Every student's individual voice and style is taken in to consideration when forming their training. No two voices are alike, and thus, no two lessons should be alike.

Emily will focus on helping you find the strengths in your voice and then finding and overcoming your weaknesses. Emily is a firm believer, that the voice is a muscle system that must be worked and strengthened, just like any other; and she will provide you with the proper strength training to achieve your artistic goals.

Emily also teaches songwriting and piano, tailored to c
ontemporary artists.

I also believe there should be some time for experimental material and improvisation. Experimentalism is something I believe should be focused on as far as theoretical educational design. Creating an environment in which students are free to create on paper or on the spot (improvisation) is something I hold as a very important part of a well-rounded music education. I believe in Existentialism because we, as musicians, are always trying to understand the meaning and existence of music itself.

About John
I have adopted the philosopher Bennett Reimer’s beliefs. He believed in music for music sake. In other words: Music was an art-form to be admired and not always performance based. Reimer believed in music literacy and wanted every child to understand and know how to read basic music notation. Music is also an interpersonal and multicultural art-form designed to excite and engage all cultures. If you can link any and all subjects to music, you will be able to grasp more students. Knowing how sound waves are made and the history of the piano, is just as important as knowing and demonstrating singing or playing instruments. My own philosophy on performance is, “Not only is it necessary, it is a necessity.”
