I am an avid reader myself, and I have experience with students who have dyslexia, ADHD, or for whom English is a second language, as well as students who may just need a little bit of extra practice/help.
I have a good sense of what aspects of reading are difficult for students, and often incorporate music, rhythm, rhyme, drama/acting, and humor, to help struggling readers.

About Linda
*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not typically provide any equipment - but I am willing to select and purchase books for the students to learn from (cost of books to be reimbursed by the student/parent) when requested to do so.

I am also willing to provide stick-on note-names for the keyboard, for young children.

The students must have their own instruments, and provide a folder for sheet music and notes/instructions.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar, I specialize in the following styles: jazz, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass, and children's songs.
Piano: I prefer electronic keyboard to acoustic piano, but am happy to teach beginning students on a regular piano as well. I teach note-reading, playing by ear, and theory, with en emphasis on rock, pop, and folk music. I include arranging, chord theory, and use of the many features of an elec
tronic keyboard, in the lessons.
Bass Guitar: I teach rock, pop, funk, and country music on bass.
Banjo: I teach bluegrass, country, and some blues and rock music. I can also teach a bit of old-timey frailing/clawhammer style.
English and Reading: I am highly qualified, to tutor/teach English (spoken, written, and reading comprehension) to both native English speakers and to those learning it as a second language.
*** I am particularly good at working with children who have a.d.h.d. and other learning disabilities!

Linda is easily the most patient and welcoming person I've ever worked with. She has incredible knowledge over a vast array of topics and she is eager to share with others. This, in my opinion, is the most important quality of all teachers. Her lessons have proved a great way to build a solid base in my field of interest. as well as providing me with a well rounded and wonderful mentor that I'm sure to rely on for many other lessons in the future- banjo or otherwise!

Crystal assists students of all ages and reading levels in enhancing their literacy and comprehension.

About Crystal
Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen
ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

Technique
Music theory
Performance style

After 3 or 6 months of consistent lesson attendance and practice, students will have a clear understanding of how their instrument works and how to care for it. They will be able to read basic music notation. They will be working toward clearly defined musical goals and they will have at least three performance pieces learned.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Loft Space: full size electric piano with weighted keys, small digital recorder, microphone, Garage Band, parents can sit in on lessons

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a small keyboard for vocal students with no piano, karaoke tracks and a digital recorder. I also bring a selection of games. Students are expected to purchase all necessary books and sheet music.

*** Specialties ***

Great piano instructor

Crystal is an amazing piano instructor. She is patient, understanding and dedicated. My daughter has learned so much from her. My daughter’s love for music has increased immensely since learning how to play the piano. This would never have been able to be accomplished without Crystal’s professional and caring teaching style.

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

About Zaky
Hi, my name is Zak! Music is a beautiful thing. It has the so much power. It can be used to send a message, move and inspire people. Music can impact emotions, it is a beautiful and powerful thing!

Music, and teaching have always been a big passion in my life. The ability to take knowledge of a subject that you have, and show, share, and shape someone and pass on that knowledge to them. It is an amazing feeling. I am a passionate, and caring instructor. My teaching style is encouraging, motivating, and educational. I fully believe that you can do anything you set your mind to, and I use that by showing my students that I believe in them.

I use a curriculum that was taught to me, and has been used in schools and universities. This curriculum fits all age groups and skill levels. Starting with Rock, moving to Funk, ending with Jazz.
When drumming playing with music, learning improvisation, and playing by ear is important. I also focus on this, having students learn their favorite songs, and learn to play with new music as well. This keeps students interested, and adds a fun personal element to their lessons. I also have implemented use of a teaching app, so while practicing if students have a question they can ask me right then so to not forget, and I can give feedback. It also has a practice tracker tool. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

I look forward to meeting you, and helping you reach your music goals!

My son is 10 years old and has zero experience with music but wanted to give drumming a try. Zaky was perfect- encouraging, fun, and friendly. Zaky is a clear teacher who stealthily sneaks in terms and concepts while the kids are hands on. I'd absolutely recommend him for any age student!

I am committed to helping students achieve to the best of their cognitive and language abilities, utilizing the language tools I have been trained and equipped with. I have a better understanding of dyslexia and its impact on reading, writing, and comprehension. I also understand how to equip students with tools to overcome this disability.

About Heather
I married my husband on June 28, 1997. We have four children. Our oldest daughter was born on August 15, 2001 and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. I quit working to stay home and devote more time to her and her needs. In 2003 we had boy/girl twins and life took on a hectic business. As they grew older, I decided to homeschool my brood. We moved from Colorado to Indiana to be closer to my husband’s ailing mother and the slower pace of life has allowed me time to cultivate my interest in gardening, cooking, and sewing! In 2013, we traveled to China and adopted our second daughter with Down Syndrome.

PLEASE NOTE: I SPECIALIZE IN WORKING WITH KIDS WHO HAVE LEARNING DEFICIENCIES AND WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO KEEP UP IN SCHOOL. I will be more than happy to assess your child and let you know if I am the right tutor for you, but will also
be honest with you and tell you when you should pursue someone who works with the more on track child or those who need someone face face.

I love to read. My mother, as well as a woman who watched me during the day, set the foundation. Both taught me an appreciation for reading. I believe a life-long love of reading should be encouraged.

About Mandy
I have an associates degree in Radio-Television-Film from Austin Community College. I have a limited experience in tutoring professionally. I do have a love of lifelong learning. I hope to pass that on to those I am tutoring. I believe that learning is a lifelong process.

My struggle with mathematics in made me determined to learn it. It wasn't until I was out of school that I found a new interest in mathematics.

I continue to learn as much as I can. If I can teach someone else that would be fantastic.

I have worked with children ages 2 to 12 for over 7 years. Also, open to working with other ages.I have also tutored children in reading and learned how to work with each child individually. Children need a special sort of stimulation to learn properly and I am able to provide to your child.

About Tempest
All students have intelligence and are capable of learning. It is all about the approach we take to get your child to excel and become more knowledgeable.

While working at Right Start Early Childhood Center as a teacher, I had the pleasure of working with children for over 7 years. I also learned what is required for children to learn and grow in all areas (physically, socially, and emotionally). The position required continuous training which kept me up to date on how to interact with ages 2 to 12.

In addition, I had the opportunity to tutor children. My first tutoring experience was with Lindenwood Elementary as a volunteer. While at this position, I guided a kindergardener to increase their alphabet recognition, vocabulary and also helped with some handwriting.

In 2016, I also had the pleasure of helping a child go from E
to C in reading and writing in only two months. I created a individualized plan just for his specific needs.

Your child/student has the intelligence, we just have to find a way to help it shine through.

I help children who are struggling with spelling and reading.

I use the Barton Reading & Spelling System, a highly effective Orton-Gillingham based system.

I work one-on-one with students either online or in Oakton, Virginia.

About Jennifer
The most important thing to know about me is that I love working with children and it shows. You can trust that I will dedicate myself to the success of your child. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing a child succeed at something they truly struggled with.

I have homeschooled my two children since 2002. My son was homeschooled until he entered the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a highly selective specialized high school in Northern Virginia. He is now a student at at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science. I continue to homeschool my 13 year old daughter.

My most treasured memories are of teaching both my children to read, knowing the great gift of reading is a fundamental building block to a successful life.

I have worked with other children for seven years as a robotics coach and a coac
h for Destination Imagination. I love the thrill of watching children develop new skills, and the blossoming of self-esteem that comes with mastering those skills.

I decided to become a Barton tutor after I saw so many of my friends' dyslexic children succeed with the Barton system. One of my first students was my own nephew!

I have been using the system as a tutor since February, 2017. I graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology-Psychology. I have loved caring for, educating and working with children for my entire adult life, and I will dedicate myself completely to the success of your child, using a proven, evidence-based system to teach dyslexic children to read and spell.
