I come from a musical family where everyone was able to play piano at a high level and considered pursuing a career in piano for a long time. Although violin had become my primary instrument, I still perform and teach. I teach any level from beginner to advanced!
Some of the books I use - Piano lessons, Level 1 James Bastien, J. S. Bach 24 Fuges and preludes, L. Beethoven Piano Sonatas, A. Mozart Piano Sonatas.

Q&A:

Q.: Do you teach bi-weekly lessons?

A.: No, I do not give bi-weekly lessons, and require all of my students to take at least 4 lessons a month to be able to join my studio.

Q.: What happens if I miss a lesson?

A.: My studio policy is that all of my students are required to give me an at least 24-hour notice if they will be missing their lesson for any reason with the exception of illness or family emergencies. It is the student's responsibility to reschedule the lesson for the same week, or their lesson time will be charged in full. For illnesses and ...

I always cater my instruction method towards a student's specific needs. Beginners will usually progress through a series of books to help them improve performance technique and grasp the fundamentals of music theory. We then move on to practicing more focused repertoire, which may include anything from Bach and Beethoven to The Beatles and Ben Folds, depending on the student's interests. My goal is always to give the student a set of tools that will allow them to adapt to any style of music.

I specialize in working with beginning to intermediate pianists and vocalists of all ages, especially those at any level who know the style of music they want to explore and master. My passion is working with my students in ways that prepare them to pursue their musical interests armed with technique, music-reading capabilities, and what I call the "building blocks" of music: knowledge of functional music theory and how to use it.

"Music theory" can sound daunting, but in fact it is fascinating, at least the way I teach it, using analogies appropriate to the age of the student, from chords like different types of sandwiches (yum!) to chord progressions like the materials and equipment used to build a house.

I encourage my students from the start to EXPRESS themselves musically, emotionally, playfully, in ways that keep their imaginations engaged in their musical studies, rather than private lessons becoming stressful or tedious. Let's get started in my beautiful home teaching ...

Teresa is an amazing music teacher! This was my first time getting singing lessons, and I was really nervous going into it, but she did such a great job at helping me feel more comfortable in the beginning. She’s so kind and she’s a great teacher too. The techniques and skills that she taught me have been extremely helpful, and she teaches them in a really easy-to-understand way. I would definitely recommend her!

Music has been my passion since starting lessons age 7 and training for years in performance, composition and theory, culminating in a masters degree from The Royal Academy of Music in London, England. Learning to read music well with enjoyment, musicality and strong technique is my main focus. I cover music from different periods in history, including music being composed today. I work with children age 5 to adults with all levels of experience. I have taught children in schools and privately in my home studio where I have an upright acoustic Schulze Pollmann (German/Italian) piano and a Yamaha keyboard with weighted keys. Positive reinforcement is my teaching philosophy and each lesson is tailored to the students needs and goals. Check out my availability and let’s get started!

I made the switch from in-studio to online piano lessons with Gabbi and couldn’t be more impressed with how seamless the transition has been. She has been helping me learn the fundamentals of technique and theory and is very good at creating a challenging yet supportive learning environment. She’s also good at helping me to choose pieces to learn that are within my abilities but still enjoyable to play. My playing has improved a ton in just a few lessons thanks to her guidance. Highly recommend!

"I am a 50-something-year-old business executive who began taking beginner piano lessons with Susan Merdinger almost 5 years ago.

Now, I am performing Chopin Nocturnes and Preludes and cherished works by Mozart and Beethoven to name just a few.

My Mom let me quit piano lessons in 1967 when I was growing up on the Southside of Chicago. I spent the next 45 years regretting it.

Now, as my piano teacher, Susan is inspiring me to make up for lost time.

At the end of each year, I am amazed at being able to play pieces I couldn’t have imagined performing 12 months earlier. This satisfying achievement comes only because of Susan’s character and competence as a teacher and her passion and enthusiasm to motivate me to practice 1 to 2 hours every day.

Susan is patient while maintaining very high standards with a commitment to excellence. She celebrates the progress of all her students to whom she is dedicated. While waiting for my lesson to begin, I have watched in amazement as she interacts with a full studio of very diverse students, young and old, boys and girls, beginners and advanced, even handicapped blind and autistic students. I’ve watched as she’s brought smiles to all her students after their recitals and audiences after her own concerts.

And Susan is one of the smartest persons I know who is expanding my horizons of the classical repertoire I play and appreciation of the classical music I listen to. There is a special pride to see your piano teacher perform solo or with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at historic venues in Chicago or New York City.

I am a busy executive, but my piano lesson is the highlight of the week, even if that entails a 90-minute battle in Chicagoland rush hour traffic to get to my lesson.

That’s because my life is richer with the music Susan imparts.

I can’t recommend her strongly enough."

"Awesome Teacher and Great Person!

We have been taking lessons with Lydia for about 8 years total now. My daughter took piano lessons for 5 years and my son for 4 years. Both kids started at about kindergarten age. Lydia also gave piano and harp lessons to my wife for about 2 years.

Lydia is very patient and flexible. For example, she is willing to let my son explore songs on the piano that he is interested in, even though these aren’t necessarily part of her original lesson plan. Also, Lydia uses the piano dollar approach, which really helps to motivate the kids to work hard.

We highly recommend Lydia for piano and harp lessons for kids of all ages and adults!"
