About Andrew
Andrew is a dynamic educator with years of experience teaching students of all ages. He recently graduated from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he studied classical percussion, jazz, and Afro-Cuban music. A native to southern California, Andrew obtained his bachelors degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University Long Beach.

Andrew's love for teaching has been on display in private settings, as well as classrooms. He enjoys learning new techniques to inspire and challenge students to maximize their potential while also providing a fun environment.

Throughout his career, Andrew has performed both solo and ensemble music in numerous venues across the country, including the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and Carnegie Hall in New York. His performance career started
when he joined the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets as a snare drummer in 2003. During his membership, the corps won the Best Percussion Caption Award twice and the DCI Open Class World Championship in 2008. His passion and dedication as a marimba soloist were on display when he performed the world premier of Nathan Daughtrey's Halcyon Days with the CSULB Percussion Ensemble. Since beginning his studies at the Jacobs School of Music, Andrew has recorded and performed as the bongocero with seven time Grammy nominee Wayne Wallace in the IU Latin Jazz Ensemble.

To the extent of what I learned in my experience, Andrew is a great percussion teacher for students looking to join a band or marching band. He obviously had a great amount of knowledge and experience with the instrument itself but also the teaching of it. By the end of the first lesson we had already moved to patterns with 8 strikes on each hand and was presented with an arsenal of other exercises for afterwards to find a rate of improvement when given time. He is a very patient teacher and is sensitive to mistakes and which ones to focus on. I could safely recommend him to any of my friends who are also into percussion, and can speak from experience that any nervousness of getting a new teacher quickly dissolves after the first lesson. Great teacher.

My son was apprehensive about doing this online, but Ouray but him at ease and they had there first session. When a 16 yrs old boy that doesn't speak much to his parents says "It was good" (with a smile on his face), we have success!

Having previous experience with many different math tutors, Ouray is BY FAR the best. As an ASU business student, I have been required to excel in math and this would have been absolutely impossible without Ouray. He is the friendliest, most relatable and enjoyable tutor there is. He is also incredible flexible with dates, times, and meeting spots which has made my life so much easier! From pre-calc to statistics, Ouray was always prepared and helped me to understand the material in such a simple, approachable way, completely different from that of my professors. I am an MIT tutor specializing in math and science, and I have taught math anywhere between pre-algebra and calculus (including trigonometry) for 5 years. I believe in in-depth learning. In-depth learning helps my student build the foundation necessary to succeed in their future courses. To facilitate this type of learning, many of my lessons feature derivation of formulas. For the lessons that do not involve formulas, I present a few simple concepts from which we can derive and solve many other problems. My lessons also feature numerous questions to enhance student engagement and to improve student confidence of having them solve the problem on their own as much as possible. I then drill my students with practice problems and get them to explain until I'm fully convinced that my students truly understood the material.

Though I specialize in gifted students, I also have worked with students from all kinds of background. Most of my students are either high school or college students, but I also worked with younger students. I also helped some students implement organizational tips and develop study skills necessary to succeed in their future classes. I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
