(Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

I have been sharing the joy of playing guitar with others since 1983. I attended Guitar Institute of Technology from September 1984 to September 1985 and still hold the title as the youngest female graduate at the school to this day. I later earned a Masters degree in teaching and learning to enhance my skills as a teacher in music and in other areas of education; but I learned some very valuable skills in my graduate program that give me an edge over teachers without an advanced degree. While I may have formal training in teaching, my actual approach is very holistic. I like to get to know my students; I want to know about them- what kind of music they are interested in and how they learn best. Once I determine the type of learner that I am working with and what the student would like to achieve, I then use that to develop an individualized approach for that student. I believe that fundamentals are necessary and good, but I also believe that those fundamentals should be put to use in a manner that accommodates the student and their particular likes and musical goals as quickly as possible. What good are concepts without application? I want to see students playing with skill AND with joy because they are able to play what they love to listen to and even more....I like to see students create their own music with the skills that they acquire.

I have been tutoring for almost 5 years. During my lessons, I help with homework and add additional problems and examples in areas the student seem to be struggling in. I like to use visual representations as often as possible because I believe that the way one student learns, does not apply to all students! Thus, if the student isn't understanding, then it's not the student's fault but the teacher's. I believe that learning should be fun and I try to incorporate that into my lessons!

I believe in in-depth learning. In-depth learning helps my student build the foundation necessary to succeed in their future courses. To facilitate this type of learning, many of my lessons feature derivation of formulas. For the lessons that do not involve formulas, I present a few simple concepts from which we can derive and solve many other problems. My lessons also feature numerous questions to enhance student engagement and to improve student confidence of having them solve the problem on their own as much as possible. I then drill my students with practice problems and get them to explain until I'm fully convinced that my students truly understood the material.

Though I specialize in gifted students, I also have worked with students from all kinds of background. Most of my students are either high school or college students, but I also worked with younger students. I also helped some students implement organizational tips and develop study skills necessary to succeed in their future classes. Matthew is very knowledgeable of the game. He is easily approachable and has the ability to connect with students of all skill levels as well as multiple generations. My teenage son was comfortable with him immediately and he is not always receptive to learning if the setting feels awkward to him. As for my own experience I received valuable insight into my own games after reviewing score sheets from tournament games and isolating those ever present blunders that seem to lurking on every chess board just waiting to be discovered. Anyway I give a hearty two thumbs up to my millennial friend.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

Since I moved to sugar land , I have gone from Commonwealth elementary, to Fort Settlement, Clements high School and now to University of Houston. My major is Electrical Engineering on Drone Technology and also Im about to graduate from The Ocean Corporation as an underwater welder on February 2 2018. As for me i learn faster hands on, or visually because once you see something its not that hard to forget it. I love learning and think that there is always more knowledge out there to enhance your learning experience. I got an A in both Calculus 1 and 2 at UH and now im taking Calculus 3 this upcoming semester.
