Hello!

I’m excited to work with your child to help improve and enjoy math! When I was in school, math was a struggle for me. I had to learn math in many different ways for it to make sense to me. I had to work hard, and I did!

Because of my growing up and learning how to learn, it has made me passionate to teach and help others. I have taught in pre-schools and been a music teacher for 15+ years.

I’m a strong advocate of learning math. Without having a strong math base, school will be more difficult for kids and less enjoyable. Let’s work together to help your child learn and enjoy math so that their school experience is happier and more productive!

Students are required, by me, to have a subscription to a math site called IXL in order to track student's progress. ixl.com

About Christy
I teach MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY, & MATH

MUSIC
I am an independent music instructor. I have trained students in opera, jazz, and contemporary.

I began my piano studies at age eight and began teaching in high school. I have a Bachelor of Arts minor in vocal performance from Brigham Young University.

I have taught hundreds students of various ages and abilities and have been involved in a number of musical groups and productions, such as Opera Scenes, Phoenix Rising, Women's Chorus, and the Cincinnati Women's Group.

My instruction emphasizes a relaxed learning environment with a focus on the student's needs.

I also encourage and teach my students how to take care of their voice and body to avoid strain or injury.

What Students Will Learn:
*Sound, rhythm, and beat
*Figuring out where the notes are on a page of music
*Dy
namics (such as loud and soft)
*Understanding high and low notes
*The importance of regular practice
*Following instructions
*Performing for a teacher (and an audience, in some cases)

Sources for Student Learning:
*Student books
*Handbells (for young children)
*Pictures of notes
*Flashcards
*Videos/songs that help students learn how to read notes

Performances:
*I encourage each student to find at least one opportunity to perform yearly. Whether performing for friends or family, regularly performing for an audience results in tremendous growth!

Student Books Used:
*Piano Adventures
*Suzuki
*Alfred Series

PHOTOGRAPHY
I earned my Visual Arts major in Photography from Brigham Young University.

I have run a photography business for 18 years.

I have taken pictures for weddings, engagements, senior pictures, landscapes, and family portraits.

I focus mostly on what students would like to learn.

How to manually operate a camera is a critical learning emphasis.

If applicable, we'll also talk about how to run a photography business.

MATH
With my kids, I have worked with one child who requires substantial help and another who is several levels above standard. Both have challenged me to research and learn many resources and methods to help them learn and perform math at a high level.

My goal with students is to assess their math proficiency and either help them find new ways to challenge themselves or help them learn how to be more comfortable with math and perform at an appropriate level.

I strongly believe math is critical for success in K-12 and college. My philosophy is if a student is comfortable with math, he or she will be happy at school!

About Mena H.

Orlando, FL
View Full Profile

My name is Mena. I have a strong background in math with a degree in Actuarial science and have been tutoring the SAT, ACT, Algebra 1&2, and Geometry for over four years. I have extensive knowledge of the testing strategies needed to make the exam fun and easy. I work with students to find areas that need strengthening then work patiently with them to hone their skills. Successful test preparation is largely about demystifying the test through time spent learning the correct approach which I have years of experience doing, with that confidence students can achieve any score they set their minds to.

About Mena
I have been tutoring Common Core Math, Algebra I & II, Geometry, SAT, ACT, and Grade school math since 2012; there is nothing I enjoy more than watching my students succeed.

I create a relaxed environment for my students in order to make the work stress free and enjoyable. My goal is to make the coursework fun for the student by finding an approach to learning that works best based on their unique characteristics. Being able to empathize with students in order to understand where their challenges lie and patient in helping them overcome those hurdles is where I excel. By exploring different approaches to difficult concepts I break them into manageable pieces that fit with each students prior experience which make learning approachable rather than overwhelming. Behind every concept we have yet to master there is a myth in our mind about
what it entails. Demystifying through creativity and humor allows my students to overcome a combination of fear, frustration and/or complacency that we all experience at some point while learning.

I have tutored dozens of students in the SAT and ACT and have helped them all increase their scores with most increasing their SAT score at least 100 points and some by over 400 points and on the ACT most by over 8 points and some by over 15 points. These are very difficult tests designed to be difficult to improve on. All of my students who gave themselves plenty of time to prepare and followed through on their promise to work on their own have seen significant score improvements.I have also worked with numerous students on developing study skills; helping them find the fun in school as well as helping with their organization skills and approach to homework.

We like Mena’s Style of teaching. He has a way to get my 16-yr-old son to study and do extra math work daily. He goes through the lessons to prep my son for the school work and also get him to do the SAT prep. He has a lot of knowledge and tricks on the SAT that are very helpful. We do a weekly class with Mena is the past 6 months and will continue through high school.

I want to help students gain understanding into the problems they solve: I do not want to teach them simply how to solve problems, but more fundamentally why problems can be solved in particular ways. In doing so, I want to enable students to become true problem solvers who think logically and creatively.

About Wes
I am trained in philosophy (B.A., University of North Texas, and M.A., Biola University) and have been teaching/tutoring for over five years in math, reading, writing, SAT/ACT, and critical thinking/problem solving. I have taught a wide range of ages, from elementary to graduate students, and in classrooms of 100+ students to one-on-one lessons. Ultimately, I love to learn and teach, and I have a passion for helping others achieve their goals.

My students can expect to learn to think well about the subject we study together. We will not simply pursue the knowledge of how to, for example, solve some math problem, but we will also seek to understand why we can solve it this or that way. So, we will pursue both knowledge and understanding. When students have understanding, they are much better prepared to apply what they have learned to oth
er similar problems. My students will learn to be creative, logical thinkers who can apply what they learn to their studies and beyond.

Math is hard. Almost every student will struggle with it at some point during their educational career, and there's absolutely no shame in getting help. I have been tutoring students for over a decade, so I have seen just about everything that students can struggle with and successfully helped them. My students leave our lessons with both a deeper understanding of the topics they were struggling with and a better approach for conquering challenging math topics in the future.

About Karl
I have always had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. As a high school student, I enjoyed discovering ways to game standardized exams and sharing these strategies with friends and family. Since then, I have amassed over a decade of experience tutoring several college admissions tests including the SAT, ACT, LSAT, AP Physics, AP Calculus, and SAT Math I, II, and Physics exams. I have also helped students with math of all levels, from kindergarten through differential equations. I love that moment when students “get it” and master material they previously struggled with. I have the content knowledge and educational experience to work with students of all skill levels and the passion to make sure that all of his students succeed.
