I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

*** Studio Equipment ***
A space for lessons with a large library of music/plays. An upright piano.

*** Specialties ***
I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. I have lots of open hours for teaching, though they are not reflected on my calendar, as my schedule tends to fluctuate.

He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.
Overall he is very involved in actually helping you developed yourself and your craft towards what ever direction you wish to take it. Highly recommend one of his lessons and experience as a mentor

I have studied under Strasberg expert, Marsha Haufrect for many years. I work with method techniques to help the student discover what is true and authentic in the character being portrayed.

About Amy
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, weather it be through singing, acting or writing. I share with my students tools to gain the ability and con
fidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those arena's for most of my adult life. I believe, it is the teachers job to respect each students individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, blues and cabaret artists and published writers.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents
-practice studio seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.

I have been teaching and coaching actors for 20 years. My students work professionally on stage, TV and film. Within the first few lessons, you will understand how to create a character. Soon, you will have the skills to book a role. I specialize in method acting, but draw upon my experience at The Second City (improvisation) in Chicago and other training I have had. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels; I can't wait to meet you!

About Jeremy
Are you working on a part for a play or film and need assistance? If you are new to acting, I can teach you what it takes to be an actor and how to bring a character to life. Do you need to prepare for an audition? Do you want to learn about the business of acting? Script analysis? I can help.

I can help with your audition for performing arts high schools in NYC. My students have gotten into the schools of their choice.

If you have training or are a working actor, I can help take you to the next level.

I am a working actor, published playwright and award winning filmmaker. I graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where I majored in drama. Currently, I am faculty member at Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York. I teach Method Acting, Acting for Camera, Improvi
sation as well as other classes. My students, both at the Institute and from private coaching, have appeared in independent stage and film productions, TV shows, commercials and Hollywood films.

Acting is the art of bringing a character to life. I use the Lee Strasberg Method, my original exercises and a fun and serious demeanor to help actors express themselves as artists and gain the confidence and skills they need in order to book acting jobs.

My book, "The Young Actor's Handbook", is published by Applause Theatre and Cinema Books. "The Young Actor's Handbook" ignites the beginning actor's creative soul with acting exercises, acting theory, writing exercises and insight into what it means to be an actor. This is a pragmatic manual that guides and informs the young actor, beginning actor, novice acting teacher or anyone who wants to understand acting.

"Jeremy Kruse's book, "The Young Actor’s Handbook", leads the young actor on the correct path. Jeremy is an experienced acting teacher who has broken down acting in an academic way while nurturing the soul of the actor. He understands the emotional aspects of good acting. I commend Jeremy and believe he has accomplished quite a feat in writing "The Young Actors Handbook." - Vincent D'Onofrio

I hid in the altos for years and she helped me find the wider range I was seeking. She includes great visualizations in her lessons which helps a visual learner like me. James Wagner is actually the best teacher of creative work I've ever had in any field, and as a writer/ filmmaker/ musician dude, I have had a lot! His teaching is rigorous, passionate, and results-driven, while remaining flexible and sensitive at the same time. His knowledge of acting and theatre theory is endless. He is always trying to expand the possibilities in his classes, bringing in guest speakers, and facilitating unexpected exercises. He is also an inspiring, warm hearted person. Kate and I started a theatre company with actors we all met in his classes, so that should tell you something. I honestly would not be the same person had I not encountered his generous vision of acting and theatre. You cannot go wrong by having him as a coach or teacher.

I met James when I took his class at Berkeley Rep (Eugene O'neill scene studies). I immediately knew he was the kind of Acting coach I'd want to train me, the level of professionalism and high standards is invaluable. During a short trip to LA, I met with James for a 3 hours coaching in which we created a 3 year plan to go from Student actor to working actor this was followed up with some online (Skype) sessions. Next I took another scene study with James at Berkeley Rep in which we workshopped Contemporary plays, James in a kind, professional way was able to push me to the level he knew and expected his students to be. And recently I took an Actor's retreat end of last year, again I left the retreat so inspired and motivated. I can tell you now that I have been in a few Theatre productions, I have and continue to meet the goals we set out for me sooner than what we had mapped out. I couldn't have done it without James vast knowledge of acting and motivation. I highly recommend you study with James!

I've studied with James in both a workshop context, and one-to-one on-line. Both were very valuable and enjoyable experiences. James is a very skilled actor, a very learned man, and an insightful teacher and director. Each element of his teaching is a different expression of a life that is clearly committed to his art as an actor. I found working with him to provide a deep new view of the playwright we studied (Albee in our case), and a very supportive guide to my personal work as an actor. I can highly recommend him.

Method acting depends on whether you are talking about the work of Constantin Stanislavski or of a later teacher, Lee Strasberg. I am a Stanislavski fan because I find that Strasberg's approach is too invasive of the actor's privacy. Stanislavski's system has stood the test of time, while Strasberg's overly emotional method is fast fading from the standard training of professional actors.

I am known for my ability to diagnose and solve an actor's problems quickly. I can see where an actor's talent lies and help to let it flourish using my logical and straightforward approach to instruction. My passion for acting is always present and contagious.

I have been teaching acting for thirty years privately as well as at acting schools and conservatories. I founded Acting Studio Chicago, headed the acting program at Louisiana State University, and recently retired as an Associate Professor of Acting at The Theatre School Conservatory at Depaul University in Chicago. About Jane
My passion is teaching acting!

My mission is to help actors learn and grow, especially those who weren't given lots of help. I myself had few financial advantages, and little help or encouragement from my family. I am not particularly good looking nor was I not able to attend one of the prestigious universities or acting schools.

However, At the age of 20, I began making my living as an actress and as a singer.I am now a long time member of AEA and SAG/AFTRA.

My success came from hard work, determination, and talent. My drive to work as an actress never included fame, I simply wanted to act anywhere and anytime.
I struggled for many years to find a teacher or a method that would help me develop my talent and finally found one in Michael Shurtleff, author of the book, Audition. I worked with Michael for two years and became
his assistant. He inspired me to become a teacher, and I stopped acting because it no longer was as exciting to me as teaching and directing.

Now I teach workshops all over the country, do lots of skype and facetime coaching, and guest teach at universities. My dream of reaching lots of actors has come true and for that I am grateful.

In July 2017 I attended Jane's Fresh Faces for Film group session and from the moment she began the class I was taken aback by the depth and realism she brings to the art of acting. I knew I had come across an incredibly important person in my life; akin to the handful of teacher's in my youth that left an indelible mark on me. You quickly realize the experience and knowledge that she has established over her long career are immensely engaging and enriching. If you are willing to give in, she will take you down a path whereby you will learn not only acting but also something new about yourself. I am the sponge to her rain and extraordinarily privileged that our path's have crossed. I look forward to our next session.

A couple years ago my son was cast as the Grinch in a school production. I found her thru Facebook. She gave him 2 lessons and then spent time with him on the phone. Mark is a great kid but he has autism so it can be a challenge. Patricia had experience working with special needs students and I must say she was impressive. Marky took to her right away, she didn't talk down to him, but was a cool friend as well as a teacher. She brought him out of that shell and gave him a lot of attention, was patient and understanding with him. I was proud when he did his thing at school. Highly recommend her especially good with kids. My only issue was scheduling. For the first lesson I was hoping she could come to us and we lived too far then I did have to wait a week or so to book another time but we did get in a couple lessons in time for his show.

It's a breath if fresh air to work with a coach that focuses on the truth and life of the character, the technical aspects of the work, and keeping in mind my vocal quality. I think she offers me a unique approach, that pulls from not just one particular school of thought. She's incredibly patient, and challenges me to keep digging deeper until I hit a choice that really resonates and fuels me to the point that feels real and strong. She works very hard to make sure my finished product looks spotless and is a vital asset to my success and I will be sure to use her on every project I book.
