I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. Hello there! My name is Colin, and I have four years of experience tutoring math and science. I began tutoring on college campuses, but have most recently been tutoring students – ages 12 through 50+ – from all over the country through online video chat. I am a UC Berkeley biomedical engineering graduate, and as such, both math and science are a significant part of my daily life. In college, I excelled in mathematics up through differential equations, as well as in science classes such as physics, general and organic chemistry, general and molecular biology, and programming. As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress my students by showing them how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my foundation level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.

My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. I hope this brief explanation of my qualifications and teaching style has provided a clear image of what you can expect from me as your tutor. Colin's vast knowledge in so many subjects allows him to find unique approaches to teach and tutor. He knows the material so well that he is always able to find ways in which to break down the process of understanding the material. Colin will also breakaway from the point at hand if he feels that there might be some basic knowledge that I might not be aware of, but will contribute to my understanding. He also provided me with techniques that have helped me restructure the way I learn. Overall, a great instructor that has helped me come a long way in my ability to learn.

Jordan was very patient and personable with my son's lesson. It was his first time learning to play his beginner acoustic guitar. Jordan began with the basics, explaining frets, chords, how to pick and precisely tune listening to an online tuner.

The tuning homework exercise was just right for his introduction. He brought along his electric guitar and explained things for us in a way that was easy to understand and pick up. He is looking forward to his lessons.

While in college, I tutored students in various Math course ranging from Calculus to Linear Algebra. My students went on to get a deep understanding of the subject material and did very well in the classes I tutored them in. I believe for a student to learn, it takes effort on both the student's part and the teacher's. I take my time to fully understand what the student's weaknesses are and how to approach them while instilling confidence in the student.

I also tutored and was a Graduate Assistant in a few Electrical Engineering classes such as Circuits 1 and a few labs as well. As far as teaching baseball, I played for a Division 1 team in college. I also worked in one of the largest baseball camps in the Northeast, the New York Baseball Academy, throughout my entire collegiate career. I taught children the fundamentals of hitting and fielding in a way that was fun and easy to learn.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
