Learning or perfecting skills can often feel intimidating and challenging at times. In each personalized lesson, it is my goal that you feel encouraged and appreciated for the unique singer or learner you are. I will give you the tools you need to become a confident and composed performer and to reach your goals as a student. I will provide fun and interactive exercises that help you master the basics of breath, posture, tone, diction, and the foundations of musicianship. Students will learn how to prepare a song and how to present a song in dramatic and interpretive form. Students will learn how to prepare for auditions and competitions (choral, solo, theatre role, etc.), and how to overcome stage fright and other challenges that are unique to live performance. I use a variety of teaching tools such as physical movement, imagery, and visual aids. I specialize in classical singing, musical theatre, and the jazz/blues sound. My goal is for you to enjoy singing and to meet your goals, whether you want to just sing at home for your family or land a leading role in a musical!

Kindness and understanding are the foundations of a successful student-teacher relationship. I believe in building students up so they can see how innately gifted they truly are; there is no such thing as a person who “can't sing.” I teach students of all ages and with all kinds of musical backgrounds. My studio is a place for patient, supportive growth: you should expect to work hard and have fun at the same time. If you choose to take voice lessons with me, we will spend your first lesson exploring your skill level as a singer, determining your musical interests, and reviewing or learning the basics of vocal technique. My goal is to help you grow as a musician by giving you the tools you need to sing music from any genre with confidence. As we continue our work together, you will develop or refine excellent breath control, consistent, beautiful sound production throughout registers, and an understanding of what healthy vocal technique is and why it matters. We will also spend lesson time practicing ear-training, sight-reading and music theory as they apply to the songs we are working on together. In addition to regular voice lessons, I offer coaching for singers who have upcoming competitions, auditions or other performances. Vocalists who work with me as they prepare for these events often go on to land their preferred roles and win their competitions. Whether you need guidance in repertoire selection, diction, or help with a few tricky passages, I am available to assist you as you prepare for your singing event. *2022 Update*: In order to give students/performers the best chance of success, I require a minimum of three booked sessions over a period of at least three weeks before the audition or competition is set to take place. My open-communication policy as an educator enables me to answer questions and provide additional resources, including customized warm-ups, outside of regular lesson time. I also maintain flexible scheduling for all of my students: studying singing is a fun challenge, but lessons should never be a source of stress. I am always happy to work with you to accommodate your schedule. Background: I am a classically-trained lyric soprano with over seventeen years of vocal education. I studied with PhD and MA professors of voice at universities in Kansas and Washington State. I also have many years of experience as a performer at a variety of venues across the country: my background includes solo concert work, lead and supporting roles in opera and theater productions, and event performances and competitions. I taught voice and beginning piano lessons, often on a volunteer basis, to students part-time from 2006 to 2012. I now teach voice lessons and provide coaching full-time. Students can study with me online or in-person at my studio.

My only job is to help you find your own voice! And to have a lot of fun along the way! We record you all the time in a recording studio environment. Then you will benefit from getting used to that voice that only you can hear. This is like having your own producer! I am no throat specialist, but, I have accompanied singers for decades and may have some suggestions to help you. From breathing to posture to intonation, to energy, enunciation and more, there is a lot to cover. I will accompany your singing at the keyboard all the time. I will also encourage your recording with karaoke tracks as well. Listening to yourself is exciting and helpful. Get over that insecurity. Come sing with confidence! An integrated approach: Music almost always involves several skills. Below are some of the complementary skills that I can help you with. In my Semper Method, we always address several of them at every session. For example, we record, sing and play all the time. To sing you should be able to pick out intervals at the piano, or better yet, accompany yourself and everyone needs some music theory. So it really is all one thing. Singing in Birmingham, AL

By Mark M. - Birmingham Singing Teacher

If you are interested in using your voice and sharing your talents for singing, then Birmingham, AL offers a multitude of venues and opportunities. You'll find plenty of opportunities to show off what you're learning from your singing lessons in Birmingham because not only are there numerous churches with choirs and music of every variety, there are also venues that encourage singing, performance and professional development.

First, remember that your voice is an instrument. Vocal performance is exercising this instrument so practicing and utilizing a vocal coach are both of great benefit. A vocal coach can help you learn how to practice and exercise properly while developing the strength of your voice. Whether you utilize a coach or teacher online or in person, both can be helpful as you discover the expression of your love for music and for singing. When it comes to the appreciation and expression of vocal music, Birmingham, AL has many outlets and opportunities. Here are just a few:

  1. The Magic City Choral Society of Birmingham is a choral, arts, education and performance organization that encourages people interested in choral and ensemble performance. Their website is www.magiccitychoralsociety.org. (Birmingham was dubbed the "Magic City" during the steel mill boom of the early 1900's when the city grew from a poor small town to a major city like "magic".)

Some of the special yearly events of the MCCS include the annual Masquerade Ball, Sing Out! Open Mic nights, and the spectacular Christmas Chorale events. The MCCS also provides additional opportunities for the advanced musician through the Women’s and Men’s Choruses. Those with advanced vocal skills can audition for these specialty groups. The MCCS chorus is open to all interested persons who are 18 or over.

  1. There are dozens of music venues in Birmingham that encourage local artists. The downtown area, covering over 10 square miles, including Uptown, 5 Points, Southside and Lakeview, all have venues for artists to display their talents from karaoke to professional gigs and performances. Uptown is the newest addition to the downtown scene with everything from burgers to fine dining Mexican cuisine. The rooftop bars at several of the restaurants offer a skyline view of downtown while providing unique entertainment.

Lakeview is the one stop location in the city for fun, food, entertainment and late night clubbing. Some of the most popular music events as well as options for audience participation happen in Lakeview. I will admit, there are several places in Birmingham that play host to great musical events and talent and opportunity, but the most varied collection of this opportunity, located within two city blocks, can be found in the Lakeview area.

  1. The musical arts are one of the largest growing interests in Birmingham. From children's theater, performances at Railroad Park, museums, art festivals and community gatherings are all continuously gaining popularity and variety. You can see more of all of these events and the calendar of specifics at www.birmingham365.org

Get out on the town, experience the culture and food, and put those singing lessons in Birmingham to the test!
