Art is fun at all ages and I have experience teaching four to fifty-year-olds! My high school art students have won awards at the local, regional, and national levels mostly for drawings and paintings. We even made a couple community murals before I moved away from Houston, TX. Please see my online portfolio and student artwork at www.shinestudioshouston.com.

Many people think they can't draw. I used to be one of them. Now, I know that everyone can draw, they just need to learn how to translate what they see into an image. We will start with contour, move into gesture, create the illusion of 3D form using value and color, composition and even create the illusion of space. We will use a variety of media including graphite, charcoal, pastels (oil and chalk) and even use paint. It's really lots of fun!

About John

Hello! My name is John and I can teach you to draw and paint. I am high energy, funnier than all get out, yet have a serious love of art. Let's explore not just the technical side of drawing/painting, but let's help you discover how to express your creative self!

Engaging one-on-one tutoring that doesn't waste any time getting into the content that will improve your photos. I use visuals aids (and a whole lotta hand talk, lol) to help make these lessons comfortable and easy to understand. Together we go over the foundation of each of the lesson concepts then discuss how to start applying those concepts for results today.

If you'd like to show me your work and discuss something specific that you're struggling with (blurry images, weird colors, crooked lines, etc ), be prepared to show me the "raw" (unedited) version of your picture and what your camera settings were.

Can't wait to meet you :)

I have been a professional calligrapher for 7 years and have been teaching calligraphy for 5 years. During that time, I have provided services for over 250 weddings and special events.
Not only will you build a strong foundation for your calligraphy skills through our lessons together, but we can also discuss how to start and grow your own calligraphy business in advanced lessons.
In the beginner lessons, will go over the very basics, including supplies, dipping the pen in ink, pressure and flow, and basic letter forms. We will keep things as simple as possible as you learn to hold and maneuver the calligraphy pen.
In continued and more advanced lessons, we will add to your existing knowledge and skill level by working on different calligraphy styles, mediums, and supplies together.
With every one on one session together, the lessons will be catered to your skill level and your specific area of interest as these will change as you continue to practice on your own. I'm excited to ...

About Betsy

After spending most of my childhood dreaming about becoming an artist, I grew up, went to school, got married, had babies, and became a...(drumroll)...nurse. While nursing was fulfilling in many ways, a part of me always felt that there was something else that I should be doing. The feeling that I'

I've been drawing all my life and still enjoy it. It's a great pastime and a creative way to express yourself. You'll need, pencils, large pad of paper and to keep a sketch book for this class. You'll learn different techniques and ways to see things on paper. If you want classes in the Manhattan Beach library, let me know, and give me some time, so I can schedule a room there in advance.

"My son is a beginner in drawing and is a bit apprehensive about his drawing skills. I really appreciated and liked Margarita's approach, setting music to create a relaxing atmosphere for drawing, explaining the steps, and the foundation for sketching. I think we approached drawing wrongly and after the lesson I changed our way. We play music now (which he likes) and he is drawing more often and is more relaxed."

"The first lesson went very well with my daughter. Belinda was methodical in her teaching and approached the lesson with my daughter’s interest in mind. During the lesson, Belinda was able to actively engage my daughter the whole time, and more importantly, her teaching revived my daughter’s interest in drawing. She has already devised future plans to have my daughter practice sketching noses, eyes, and ears so that my daughter may draw the human face later with more realistic details."

"I've known Emily for years and while I'm not an artist, I have observed her teaching children how to draw, particularly during summer classes at the College of Saint Rose in Albany. She always tries to make each activity fun and engaging and does her best to help everyone understand how to draw, paint, sketch, and even how to design good characters. She genuinely does care about art, and that passion shines into her lessons for sure.

I don't draw, but if I chose to, I'd definitely pick Emily as my teacher over anyone else."
