Textures--using salt, layering, sponges, scratching, lifting, etc. Considering your light source. Loosening up. Taking care of brushes. Paper selection. Painting outdoors in the open air, from photographs, or from still lifes. Using your phone to help you edit your painting. All levels--from beginner to advanced. Demonstrations on creating watercolors in the style of famous watercolorists.

Subject matter can include landscapes, seascapes, florals, abstracts, still life, color grids, and more.

About Jane M.

I LOVE teaching. I'm an award-winning artist and I've taught watercolor for 25+ years. I've taught students of all ages from the US & Italy. I've taught at Cleveland Botanical Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, Illinois Central College, in churches, libraries, home schools, & at Harvard University Extension School, Cambridge, MA. We will paint what appeals to YOU...from oceans to flowers to abstracts to landscapes to seascapes, etc. Or we can focus on one technique that interests you. Or, cover "the basics."

Some of my students are now professional artists & some have become art teachers. The materials can be simple. For watercolor painting, we'll use a couple of good quality brushes, about 6 paint colors, watercolor paper, water and a palette.

Ta-Da! You’re ready to go. (I’ll provide a detailed supply list for enrolled students.)

This was my first lesson with this website. I really enjoyed Jane's laid back style and friendly going personality. She was easy to connect with and talk to. Extremely helpful. I like how she focused on exactly what I was asking for help with and didn't waste my time with unnecessary help.

Jane helped me through some self doubting/negative thinking places. She was sensitive to where I am and acknowledged that. Then we moved on to paint more from there, continuing to learn and grow. I am rejuvinated! Thank you, Jane.

We painted together. I found that very helpful. We also focused on watercolor
basics, ex. how to use brush for different effects, mixing colors to get the one
I want. She answers my questions. Thank you, Jane.

Jane explains things very well. She is a good listener and attentive to questions. She brings so much talent to the session from years of experience. Even though she has so much talent and experience, Jane has the gift of breaking down concepts to the student's level. I look forward to more sessions with her!!!

I'm a beginner, so I was very cautious in choosing an instructor. I wanted to find someone who is an experienced artist, but also able to understand and explain things on my beginning level. Jane is able to do just that. Not only is she a wonderful artist, but she exudes such joy in what she does that it is contagious. She's a good listener and very intuitive, so her advice was just what I needed. I highly recommend her. I also highly recommend the online classes if the teacher is not in your area because Takelessons.com has perfected the system and makes it so easy.

Jane was amazing--Patient, encouraging and very knowledgeable! Her instructional language and modeling were explicit, which helped us learn new techniques and concepts. For example, when we were painting cone flowers, she helped us step by step to understand the flower structure. Also, the three of us taking the lesson were at different experience levels and she was able to differentiate her instructions so we all were successful! We were having so much fun because Jane was having fun teaching us! What a relaxing and creative experience!

On several occasions I have taken lessons from Jane over the past two years. She is an accomplished artist and has a way in which she is able to take someone who has never painted before and bring them into that world of watercolor painting. She takes you step-by-step and makes it so much fun and enjoyable. I would recommend her to anyone who would like to learn more about drawing and painting.

Creating videos on "how to watercolor." Creating step-by-step online free lessons while I create a painting. Our film crew traveled with me to California, Minnesota, Missouri and more to film several segments of our series. So many unexpected things happen while I'm painting. From wind, and bees, to dogs, and quick changes of weather. Being an artist requires thinking on your feet. :)

Blog at Art in the Center (of Everyone's life)

We think everyone would benefit from more art in their life. Art gives people a voice. It allows us to flow to a contemplative space to unwind, recharge, and to be attentive with the intuitive, "free-styling" part of our thinking. art allows us to bridge differences; to understand other cultures and ways of mental processing. Individual blog posts take on various forms of art from music to silhouette cutting to watercolor and drawing. Sometimes we consider materials and techniques. In one way or another it all circles back to teaching about art -- our core mission.
