I've created many cartoons in the context of illustration, comics and 2D animation. My specialty is in expressions, character designs and story-telling.

My recent (on-going) achievement with cartooning includes a graphic novel/webcomic I've been working on, "Dinnersaurus Rex," with hundreds of subscribers across all websites it's been hosted on. I've also created many 2D animations for clients in the past.

My mission is to spread this knowledge of cartooning and to help achieve the goals of students.

About Emily

I've been working professionally as an artist since 2009, making graphics and illustrations for clients and having worked for Disney Research for just over a year. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts in 2012. I'm currently a freelance artist, but I also love

Emily continues to be a great tutor for my daughter. She has incredible patience - especially since my daughter loves to chat - and has helped foster a strong passion for digital drawing in my daughter. Emily's skill with the tools makes it easy for my daughter to learn and experiment more on her own as well.

Help me understand my flaws in drawing, and show me many pointers on how to improve like body proportions, outlines and how to use software like Krita. Overall was a very good learning experience!!
Allie
My daughter very much enjoyed the class and working with Emily. She learned a lot and is very excited for her next lesson.

I’ve always struggled with math. It was no surprise that I had significant trouble with the GRE Quantitive section. I had tried one tutor before working with Daniel. I ended up getting the same score that I had on past tests and I felt that I was never going to get past the hurdle. I decided to find another tutor and after looking around a while and messaging several tutors on TakeLessons I connected with Daniel. Hands down he has the best methods for how I learn. He provides lesson plans, homework, and goes through every problem step by step to ensure that you are comprehending. He also tests your knowledge by having you basically teach him what you’ve learned. If you can’t explain it, then you don’t know it, is what he says. It has been awesome working with him and I enthusiastically recommend him to anyone that needs help with math at any level.

"First of all, Raymond was great. The drop-down for class type did not offer "Creative Writing" which is the class I took. I was very lucky to be Raymond's only student, so I learned so much and left with anticipation of my potential to be a writer. He gave great examples and offered time to practice. The class was 5 Hours! The time fly by for me as a student. I am a beginner so his patience was very much appreciated. After the class, I felt really inspired and have been practicing every day writing something for 20 minutes. I would definitely take another class from Raymond."

Private Cartooning Lessons Near You

Do you love reading the Sunday funnies or political cartoons published in magazines? If so, you might like to try cartooning out for yourself. A cartoonist draws still cartoons and creates text to go along with it. These cartoons are usually meant to be funny, but can also be used to provide social or political commentary in a highly effective manner.

Some of the most beloved comic strips were created by the most talented cartoonists of all time, like "Peanuts" by Charles Schultz, "The Far Side" by Gary Larson, and "Calvin and Hobbes" created by Bill Watterson. If you sign up for private cartooning classes, you could learn how to create amazing comic strips and stand-alone cartoons like these!

Why Sign Up for Cartooning Classes?

If you love to draw and write, then why not use those talents to highlight your superior sense of humor? In cartooning, these talents all come together. Cartoonists can work as freelancers, submitting cartoons to magazines and other publications independently. Others secure contracts and publish nationally in the funnies every Sunday. If you hold onto the rights of your comics, you'll also be able to make a living by licensing characters and drawings for all sorts of merchandise, like daily calendars, t-shirts, mugs, and everything in between.

As a cartoonist, you'll also have the ability to express yourself. Cartoonists also have a great platform for voicing their opinions. Most people love to laugh and appreciate clever ideas, so they're more open to reading about other opinions and points of view in a cartoon. Although not everyone will agree with your perspective, everyone can still laugh at your clever jokes.

The Best Way to Learn to Cartoon and What You'll Study in Lessons

Sure, you can find plenty of free cartooning lessons and tutorials online, but the best way to learn to cartoon is with a private teacher. In private lessons, you'll receive your teacher's undivided attention and the sort of personalized instruction that simply isn't available in a larger class setting or in online videos. With immediate feedback, you'll improve quickly, while focusing on the types of cartoons that interest you most.

Plus, every private lesson is different. Teachers completely customize each class to meet the student's needs, keeping in mind your preferred learning styles, interests, goals, and current skill level. For example, cartooning lessons for adults differ greatly in terms of content and teaching methods from cartoon classes for children. Your private cartooning tutor will keep you motivated and interested, while you learn at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Cartooning

If you have little or no previous experience cartooning, then beginner lessons are for you. In these classes, your cartooning teacher will introduce you to all the fundamentals of cartooning that you'll need to get started. In beginner lessons, your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Learn what's funny and what's not and how to navigate the fine line in between
  • Practice your illustration skills and learn additional drawing techniques
  • Work on writing simple dialogue and/or captions

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Cartooning

If you've already had some experience cartooning, but wish to improve your skills as an artist and writer, then intermediate classes are for you. In these lessons, your teacher will help you push your abilities and artwork to the next level. Your teacher might choose to cover some of the following topics:

  • Study different angles for humor (exaggeration, symbolism, labeling, irony, etc.)
  • Create cartoons that do more than joke around
  • Explore long-form cartooning

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Cartooning

If you're already a fairly experienced cartoonist but would like the opportunity to improve your work, then advanced lessons are for you. In these classes, you'll work with a professional to learn new techniques and to workshop your cartoons. Topics covered in advanced courses depend greatly on the student's interests and goals, but your teacher might choose to cover the following:

  • Work on character development
  • Fine-tune your funny bone
  • Explore different illustration techniques

How to Find a Cartooning Teacher Near You

If you're ready to start designing cartoons like a pro, working with a private cartooning tutor will give you a head-start. Luckily, finding TakeLessons makes it easy to find all kinds of private teachers. A quick search will direct you to a long list of teachers who offer lessons online and in-person to students of all ages and abilities. We recommend browsing several profiles and reading reviews left by other students before choosing a teacher.

The cost of cartooning classes varies, but TakeLessons teachers base their rates on the length and frequency of lessons. With so many teachers to choose from, you'll have no problem finding someone whose courses fit your budget and schedule. Plus, you'll find that investing in private lessons pays off fast, as both your drawing and writing skills improve with just a few lessons!
