Private Piano Teacher

Piano is my main instrument. As a music teacher and composer I realized early on the importance of piano skills. The "mother" of all instruments will help you gain musical knowledge and ability that stems into every aspect of music including music theory, composing, playing other instruments, etc.

About Daniel

In addition to teaching music, I have also worked as a special education assistant and wrestling/track coach at Lake Zurich Middle School South and an assistant Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor at Green Mountain Arts in Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois. Jazz piano, Voice, and Composition are my main areas of expertise. However, I have also been recording, and playing guitar almost my entire life. I fully believe in music education not only for entertainment and personal enjoyment, but for many other means.
Beyond its capacity for being used as entertainment, music aids in learning, helps develop advanced motor skills, increases memory function, and many other purposes for a well rounded education. It is my goal to help educate the next generation in traditional music practices as well as incorporate new techniques that are relevant to our

current day and age.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson plans vary from person to person. I always make it a point to get to know the student's existing musical knowledge, goals, and background before I create a personalized lesson plan. All important concepts are covered as they are needed so students can understand theoretical concepts based upon actual application and usage. In short, I teach in a way that students can "dig in" right away and play, create, improvise, sing and/or compose freely and naturally. I always encourage students or parents to contact me with their goals, previous musical training, etc., and discuss what they really want out of lessons so they can get the most out of taking me on as an instructor.

Daniel cancelled my son's first lesson with less than a one hour notice. He attended the second lesson, but again cancelled the third lesson with a 30 minute notice. He sent me a text message to notify me and I called him back and left a voicemail. 24 hours later and I still haven't gotten a call back. I want my money back. He has wasted my son's time. Poor professionalism.

Really enjoyed the first lesson. Daniel made it fun and im excited to learn more.

Daniel adapted throughout the course of the hour-long lesson to understand what I already knew and find appropriate ways to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. He also started me on the process of learning a new approach when looking at and learning to play new music pieces.

Susan is an outstanding pianist and teacher. She genuinely cares about the musical development of each of her students. I would highly recommend her to any serious student looking to work with a top rate teacher. It makes a difference!
December 23, 2015
I am a 50-something-year-old business executive who began taking beginner piano lessons with Susan Merdinger almost 5 years ago.

Now, I am performing Chopin Nocturnes and Preludes and cherished works by Mozart and Beethoven to name just a few.

My Mom let me quit piano lessons in 1967 when I was growing up on the Southside of Chicago. I spent the next 45 years regretting it.

Now, as my piano teacher, Susan is inspiring me to make up for lost time.

At the end of each year, I am amazed at being able to play pieces I couldn’t have imagined performing 12 months earlier. This satisfying achievement comes only because of Susan’s character and competence as a teacher and her passion and enthusiasm to motivate me to practice 1 to 2 hours every day.

Susan is patient while maintaining very high standards with a commitment to excellence. She celebrates the progress of all her students to whom she is dedicated. While waiting for my lesson to begin, I have watched in amazement as she interacts with a full studio of very diverse students, young and old, boys and girls, beginners and advanced, even handicapped blind and autistic students. I’ve watched as she’s brought smiles to all her students after their recitals and audiences after her own concerts.

And Susan is one of the smartest persons I know who is expanding my horizons of the classical repertoire I play and appreciation of the classical music I listen to. There is a special pride to see your piano teacher perform solo or with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at historic venues in Chicago or New York City.

I am a busy executive, but my piano lesson is the highlight of the week, even if that entails a 90-minute battle in Chicagoland rush hour traffic to get to my lesson.

That’s because my life is richer with the music Susan imparts.

I can’t recommend her strongly enough.

The first lesson with Susan was fantastic. My daughter is looking forward to working with her.

Private Piano Teacher

My lessons are geared toward the individual student. I spend the first lesson getting to know the student's strengths and weaknesses, history, hobbies, and general feelings about music. This helps me to better understand what the student (or parent) is hoping to gain from taking piano lessons. My lessons are meant to produce the best possible success, and most importantly, a great time and a permanent love of music.

About Grace

I started piano lessons at the age of 3 and continued through middle school. I played the flute in the high school band and continued to pursue my love of music in college where I joined the Piano Ensemble and received a degree in Music from DePaul University. I graduated in 2015 with high honors. I have been teaching music and piano for several years. I love, enjoy, and welcome students of all ages. I enjoy teaching all styles of piano music and I believe in catering teaching styles, methods, and pieces to the individual student. I strongly believe that music lessons can be happy, fun experiences. Learning an instrument provides academic, mental, physical, and emotional benefits and strength, but it can also be a truly enjoyable experience to anticipate each week! I look forward to meeting you!

The teacher seems like she’s always in a hurry. She leaves a few minutes before it ends. She’s friendly but doesn’t make real conversation with the parent to update about my child’s progress. Knowledgeable though coz my daughter learned fast. She. Would’ve been perfect if she had a great personality

Private Piano Teacher

I have worked with beginning and intermediate level piano students for the last 5 years. Several students have been with me from their first Alfred's book and continues on until they have almost graduated the entire program. When students are ready, I add Suzuki method to their lessons.

About Felicia

I graduated with a bachelors in music education at Western Illinois University in 2012. At the university I received talent grants to play in the symphony orchestra as a violinist, I also sang in the school of music top choir. After graduating I immediately was offered a position at a music studio in Geneva and have been successfully working for them for the last 5 years. For the last 3 years I have worked at a middle school in Elmhurst as a choir director and also was the vocal director for 3 musicals and head director for 2 plays. I have background with special education students from ages 5-13.

Although I am primarily a violinist and vocalist I also teach up to intermediate in piano, viola, cello, and acoustic guitar at the music studio. I believe that it is important for the student to be able to learn music theory at their skill l

evel, problem solving, and also enjoying what they play. Beginning lessons will give students a strong foundation of their instrument but adding on solo music.

June 26, 2019
She asked me what I wanted to learn and assisted me in a very patient way, and showed me the correct way of strumming and whatever else that was needed. A very good start.
June 18, 2018
Felicia is a great teacher! We work well together, she asks how I want to learn and she helps me to understand what I’m learning! As an adult learner, it helps that she can modify my lesson to suit my specific needs. I think this will be a great partnership!!
March 18, 2018
Felicia has truly helped me improve on the viola. From spotting my wrong bow hold to making sure that I am absolutely positive on where the fingerings are for the key, she has most definetly improved my playing over all and is helping me advance past most of my peers in my school orchestra.

Lexie L.

Bgcheck Background Checked

Private Piano Teacher

Greetings! I have 16 years of teaching experience as a faculty member of the fabled Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. I offer lessons in piano, voice, theory, songwriting, and transcription with a specialty in helping artists learn to accompany themselves on an instrument while singing. I am willing to work with anyone on just about anything! Lessons are tailored to fit. Note reading (or an interest in reading) is a plus but not required; traditional notation as well as standard "lead sheet" notation with chord symbols, as desired. I provide a collaborative experience in a safe, friendly, encouraging atmosphere for ages 6 and beyond. Whether you are advanced or a total beginner, every song has a lesson inside.

About Lexie

I stumbled into teaching by accident sixteen years ago and never left! That's the truth. In 1993, I moved to Chicago to pursue a Jazz Studies degree at DePaul, became a student of the late great vocal guru Ed Farran, and began my journey as a working musician. Several jobbing gigs and a handful of TV jingles later, I decided to form a band of my own to showcase the fruits of my passion for songwriting. I was asked to be a temporary substitute teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music in 2003, never imagining how transformative my experience there would be, and ended up staying on as a voice & piano faculty member for sixteen years and counting.

It turns out teaching is fulfilling, fun, and infectious.  My style in the classroom is informed largely by the exceptional teachers I've been fortunate enough to work with over the years, but

I believe I have learned the most about music from time spent with my students. Maintaining a collaborative and nurturing enviroment in our lessons is important to me for that reason.

Piano students of all ages can expect a well-rounded approach to learning their instrument in a way that is tailored to the student's personality and learning style. Sometimes we will follow a book, but often we won’t. There will be theory and technique elements to each lesson designed to enhance the student’s understanding of what they’re playing, but the focus will be on the joy of execution. A student’s willingness to learn to read music is immensely helpful but not an absolute requirement.

Voice students will practice a wide range of topics from the physical (healthy singing techniques) to the psychological (vocal inhibition issues) to the artistic (style; finding your own voice). Singers who are interested in taking their skill set a step further can learn how to get around a keyboard, understand key signatures, and write their own transcriptions.

My musical compass is always pointing lessons toward this idea: What can I do to help my students feel empowered and equipped to make music confidently when they go off to college/when they’re 45-years old/ when they’re retired? For more advanced or ambitious students the query goes further: How can I challenge and inspire my students to get the most out of their instrument and their relationship to music in general? My main goal in every lesson is to point the student toward a life-long love of self-propelled music appreciation.

Emily W.

Private Piano Teacher

I have been teaching children for 32 years, as an elementary school teacher and for the past 2 years as a personal tutor. While working as a tutor a number of parents asked me, "Do you teach piano too?" and while certainly I had worked with music as part of the curriculum, subbing for music teachers frequently, I hadn't taught piano since maternity leave, when I taught six students in my home. I have been really encouraged by how well and quickly my present students have learned and by how they respond to the solid background in theory I had, as a music student myself for many years, in Europe. Frequently parents told me the students were seeking a different approach from their previous teacher and in all cases the students have done well. Occasionally I found their previous teachers had them on books that were too advanced, that the students were not even reading the music and didn't know what or where the notes were. I prescribed a new book and worked carefully with them so ...

About Emily

Dear Student,
I am looking forward to meeting you and beginning piano lessons with you, whether you are a beginner, or have already been playing for a couple of years. I hope very much that you will find a lot of joy in playing as, week by week, you progress.
Music is a beautiful, bright and hopeful thing. As your playing improves you will gain confidence. You will also gain a very solid background in theory, keys, scales, major and minor, arpeggios, chord progressions. Perhaps alongside the piano you will learn or are learning another instrument, or you will join the school choir or the school band. There is just so much out there. I want your skills in piano to improve, but I also want you to take part in the world of music that is out there and for it to stay with you your whole life.
Living in Chicago you will have much opportu

nity to experience this world. So let's begin this Fall.
Your teacher,
Ms Emily.

Piano Reviews

"Paul is a very patient and persevering teacher, he is particularly adept with the reluctant or difficult child, he never stops being encouraging and is de
dicated to instilling knowledge to the child. I've had a very good experience with Paul and feel my child has gained some valuable musical knowledge at a young age which will become increasingly useful as time goes by."
"Lia has been a wonderful and nurturing teacher. She spent time getting to know my children and tailors lessons to keep them engaged and having fun!"
"I would like to say Steven was an amazing piano teacher for my 5 year old and he really was able to teach him a lot of the basics and some neat tunes. He
is great with kids and with my child being 5 and needing a lot of patience it was really a breeze for Steven to teach and keep his attention during the lesson. He is definitely a natural at what he does! I am very satisfied with Steven and his style of teaching. He is a well deserved five star rating and I can not wait till my son gets to start guitar lessons with him in the future."
"My son and I have been taking piano lessons from Corinne for almost a year. She is a lovely person, extremely patient and dedicated to teaching. She genui
nely cares about her students. Corinne is quite gifted working with young children as well as adults. I took piano lessons as a child, and she immediately assessed where to resume instruction. She took a totally different approach with my six year old son, who had no experience. Even though he had just started to read and write in school, she used a very understandable, age- appropriate method with him. He is now playing the piano while reading basic music at the same time. She knows exactly how much and how hard to gently push, in order to encourage improvement each week. Corinne is also very professional, dependable, punctual and takes the time you spend with her seriously. I highly recommend Corinne as a piano teacher. We enjoy our lessons immensely."
"Our 5 year-old just started lessons with Mr. Daniel. He is very patient with her, and she is excited to learn more!"
"Very good and thorough. Great first lesson. He listens and then gets right to it. Friendly and passionate about what he does."
"Laura is the best piano teacher i have ever met. I have taken 4 classes with her already. She is experienced, patient, kind and good at teaching. She expl
ains everything structurally and easily understand. She also proceed based on my capability. I can see my huge progress. I recommend her as your piano teacher also. Esp compared to some other piano teachers, she is a real great piano teacher .."

"Just had my first lesson and it went great! Janet is just the kind of teacher I was looking for. I am 67 and play the piano, but had not played in a long
time. I want to get back to it and also learn some music theory which I never had. She is super nice, and makes you feel really relaxed. It was a very positive experience and I am looking forward to my lessons!"
"Monica is fantastic!"
