About Joy
I am a graduate of UC San Diego (bachelor of arts, sociology) and UCLA (master of public policy). As a child of immigrant parents, I value diversity and love learning languages. I read, write and speak Spanish fluently, and have intermediate command of both Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese in reading, writing, and speech.

Photography has been one of my main areas of focus for over ten years. I am trained in both film and digital formats and specialize in demystifying the DSLR so that you gain a good understanding of manual settings and how to use each to improve your photos.

Caring, compassion, and understanding are essential for learning and I strive to do my best in these areas.

Joy is lovely and has been very flexible with my schedule. You can tell she loves photography and enjoys teaching. If I was more of an online learner I would have rated the session a 5. I am now realizing I am more of a hands on person it is personally challenging for me to learn using this method. In an ideal world we would be learning by shooting in real time.

About Paul
While attending the University of Southern California, where I received my M.F.A., I worked as a writing tutor in the USC Writing Center and also taught Classical Greek Mythology. After graduation, I taught Verbal, Writing and Literature SAT classes and worked as a private tutor in a variety of subjects.

I later taught for five years at the New York Film Academy in Universal City, CA, where I taught a variety of Critical Studies classes to various levels of students, some in certificate programs and others working towards their M.F.A.

As a former English and Spanish double major, I have always enjoyed teaching at various levels. Most of my other work these days involves the writing and editing of short stories, screenplays and novels.

You’ll find that I have the education, background and experience to be an excellent instruct
or for your needs.

Paul was my favorite teacher at the New York Film Academy.
Unlike most of the teachers, Mr. Paul put a lot of effort and creativity into planning his classes, which made them both stimulating and fun for us.
I also loved the fact that Mr. Paul always respected our opinions, and never made us feel stupid when we didn’t understand something. He was always very encouraging and willing to keep explaining until we got it.

I highly recommend him to anyone interested in extra lessons. He is definitely worth it!

Hilda has me learning the finer points first: pronunciation and the alphabet. It's certainly tricky for a 39 year old brain to learn a completely new language but Hilda makes it fun and I am really enjoying our lessons.

About Emily
Hello there! I'm Emily Carrier, an artist, illustrator, and all around nerd. I am a freelance Illustrator who works primarily on children's books and character designs. I have studied illustration for four years at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I have been drawing ever since I could hold a crayon. My love for art only grew with time. Now, my art style can be described as whimsical and quirky. I have worked with different clients and have even produced four children's books with more on the way!

I am here to help any beginner artist who wants to learn the fundamental basics of art, to the intermediate artist who may want to further their skills and experiment with new materials and techniques. Being a graduate of an art school, I have been emerged in an environment that pushed my own boundaries and creativity. I have lea
rned new techniques and ways to promote my art and spread my love around the world. I would love to mentor any student who wants to learn more about art, whether it is for their own personal projects or if they wish to pursue art as a career.

Art is one of the most important subjects that can be taught. It allows one to explore themselves and the world around them. You learn to harness your inner creativity which can help develop problem solving skills. You do not have to be Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, or Leonardo Da Vinci to express yourself through art. The point of art is to find your own inner happiness.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

About Kelsey
I've currently relocated from Brooklyn to LA, where I have a studio and maintain an active painting practice. In New York, as an art instructor I taught drawing, color theory, and painting as a guest lecturer at Pratt Institute, to professors looking to expand their knowledge base at NYU and Yale; former affiliates of The Cloisters; and small-scale private lessons at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and, of course, my favorite way to teach: one-on-one private lessons.

My current body of work is concerned with a female character that inhabits worlds populated by plant life. I was most recently represented by Christopher Stout Gallery New York (2015-17), and have exhibited in New York, Germany, Miami, Toronto, and Montreal. I was awarded residencies at the Centre Pompadour (France); Emerson Landing, Eastside International, Starry Night (USA
); and CanSerrat (Spain). Publications featuring my work include: Brooklyn Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, NYC-ARTS, Posture Magazine, Flavorwire, Lost at E-Minor, Lip Magazine, Tjen Folket, and the Globe and Mail. My next solo exhibition is in the Spring of 2018 in New York.
