I have over 25 years of experience in studying violin and have been teaching for 10 years. I studied violin through the collegiate level with accomplished professionals, including a former concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic.
I work with students of all abilities, emphasizing both technical skills and musicality. For beginners, I combine Suzuki and traditional methods.
Before starting lessons, you will need a suitable instrument and some books. I am happy to help you obtain the necessary materials if you do not already have them.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Evan's a fantastic teacher and I can't recommend him enough. I was a professionally trained pianist who was also badly taught some violin on the side and although I've been out of practice for years, Evan has gotten me back up to speed with my musical abilities in such a short amount of time. I've cycled through a number of music instructors in the past and Evan is the most patient teacher I've ever had. I get easily frustrated and he helps me work through the areas I get stuck on regardless of how many tries it takes. It's very apparent through his teaching that appreciation of the music is a priority. He's also flexible about rescheduling and cancellations, and I've enjoyed my lessons so much that finding the personal motivation to stay on top of my progress is never an issue when something comes up and a class has to be cancelled or postponed. Evan is both a superb musician and instructor and given a lot of my bad experiences in the music sphere in the past, he's done an amazing job of helping restore my appreciation and love for the art.Show More
Evan is a very gifted teacher. Since I started beginner lessons with him a few months ago, he has been able to teach me the complex techniques required for proper playing quickly and effectively while advancing my knowledge of music theory with his calm and encouraging teaching methods. I highly recommend him to anyone interested in lessons!Show More
All-around wonderful violin teacher! Evan has always been encouraging (and patient!) and made every lesson an enjoyable experience. I've decided to pick up the violin after a very long hiatus and at almost 30 years old - Evan provided a great game plan for me to begin reading music again as well as valuable exercises to improve my form. I'm looking forward to keeping up my violin studies with Evan and know that I've enjoyed my time (and improved my playing ability!) because of his instruction and guidance. I'd highly recommend Evan to any player - young or old - looking to pick up violin for the first time or to further hone their musical abilities.Show More
I have played clarinet going up but fullfilling New Year’s resolution to learn how to play the violin. I have had two lessons so far and Evan is the perfect teacher. As a beginner, he is very patient and supportive. I feel inspired and want to continue. I appreciate Take Lessons for connecting me with Evan. Thanks!Show More
Great lessons! I am an adult beginning violin player. I have taken lessons for two years and have really enjoyed them. Instructor is very reliable, prepared, punctual, and encouraging. I really enjoy the lessons and learning a new skill. Highly recommended!Show More
I had never played a string instrument when I began lessons with Evan almost 9 years ago. Since I came to learn the violin late in life, have limited time and energy to devote to practice, Evan has patiently taught me how to maximize my practice time such that step by step, steady progress in my playing has been made! Evan is attentive to both technique and musicality, and continually challenges me to stretch in both aspects in an encouraging manner. I am glad Evan was my first violin teacher, and remains so!Show More
I had been playing the violin for years but had gone on a long hiatus before I began taking lessons with Evan. I decided I wanted to take up the violin again, for pleasure, and he went above and beyond to ensure that I really got everything out of my lessons as possible, while making sure I had fun. He retrained me on a lot of fundamental work I'd lost and/or resisted as a child/teenager (I never thought I'd actually like playing etudes!) and he also drilled other beginner- to advanced-level skills into my playing. I will forever appreciate how he did this with a positive approach (non-confrontational, while professional), because he really improved my skills beyond what they had been even when I was playing professionally and competitively, years ago. Evan developed a great curriculum that was very well-personalized; he made me look forward to lessons (and he actually made me enjoy practicing!); and, most of all, he helped me appreciate the violin in a much more profound sense than ever before. Also, let me mention that he is talented and skilled beyond comprehension, so he's about as highly qualified as they come. I encourage you to take a few lessons with Evan and see how quickly you'll develop in his capable hands.Show More
I have taken lessons with Evan for over a year now. He is a great teacher with very sharp ears. Likes to use to metaphor to explain otherwise abstract concept. Very nice in person and flexible in scheduling lessons.
Evan has transformed my life. As a concert pianist and a former student trainee of Opera Memphis, I have had innumerable music teachers throughout my life. However, I have never had a teacher like Evan. He took me from absolute beginner - starting with learning how to even hold a violin - to decently proficient in a relatively short amount of time. He tailors his instruction in such a way that each student can understand. He has enormously high standards but he inspires students to achieve them. Evan's lessons are incredibly convenient, located close to a metro and with flexible hours to accomodate a hectic work schedule.
I cannot overstate what a transformative impact meeting Evan has had on my life. It's made me a better musician in all of my instruments, because he instills a deeper understanding of theory and musicianship. Violin is a challenging instrument, if not the most challenging, but Evan skillfully guides students to mastery. Randomly deciding to buy a violin and doing a quick search for local teachers one day was the best decision I've ever made, and it's all because of Evan. I can't imagine life without my violin teacher!
