My love of singing began in my freshman year of high school, when I joined the choir. It was a life-changing experience, and inspired me to make music my career. I participated in several musicals during high school, and also began taking private voice lessons. I became a voice teacher myself by 2005. Though I've always loved musical theater, it was during my first few years of college that I really started learning more about the genre. I attended every musical I could, listened to original cast recordings during my commute, and sang, studied, and accompanied many, many musical theater pieces. These days, I'm happy to get to sing pieces like Popular and This is the Moment with the Saint Louis Harmony Chorus, one of the top 25 women's barbershop choruses in the world. I am on the music faculty of the chorus, and am also the baritone section leader. I also sing in an award-winning barbershop quartet called Executive Sweets. We have a three-song set from Wicked in our current repertoire, and I couldn't be happier.

Vocal students are not required to purchase a curriculum for voice lessons, as lessons are based around the fundamentals of singing (breath support, head/chest voice, tone, and diction) and focused on each student's desired repertoire. For musical theater students, this includes pieces from musicals by anyone from Gilbert and Sullivan to Sondheim, Webber, or Schwartz. Pieces will be selected based on student's voice type, ability level, interest, and connection to the character, all with an eye toward creating a diverse pool of repertoire from which to pull for auditions and performances. Each lesson also includes warm-ups tailored to each student to develop technique and expand range, and a short theory or ear training session. Depending on student interest, these lessons may also include work on improvisation, composing, and musical dictation.

About Angela H.

Hi! My name is Angela, and I teach private piano, voice, and music theory. I've been teaching music for most of my life at this point, and have taught many ages (3 to 93) and ability levels. My favorite, though, is watching long-term students grow and mature as musicians over the course of several years. I believe it's a teacher's highest honor to be able to one day tell a student that it's time to spread their wings and take flight on their own, and nothing delights me more than when my students come to me with pieces they've learned on their own, because they had the desire and the confidence to try something new without me.

I am a dependable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic teacher - I love what I do, and it shows. I'm also flexible - whether a student is interested in performing, recording, competing, or just making music in their own home, I always tailor the lesson around a student's unique goals. I consider myself more a guide than a taskmaster - creating structure to help the student thrive, yes, but also working with them to overcome obstacles. I find that's the best way to promote lasting change and improvement.

I offer lessons for 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly sessions in my home studio or online. I do not offer bi-weekly lessons or lessons in the student's home.

Great first lesson. Eased my fear as an older student that has never played an instrument. She has a nice approach based on my goals. Looking forward to learning more!

She is a great teacher with a lot of patience for this woman who always wanted to learn how to sing! I'm sure it isn't easy teaching online because of this time in our life, but she makes it fun!

Angela is the most inspiring teacher I've ever had. Aside from having played the violin for a year prior, I was a complete adult beginner on piano. My passion is Baroque-era keyboard works, and Angela immediately got me started on Bach Prelude No. 2 from 12 Little Preludes. Within 12 lessons, I was able to play the entire piece with ease. Before starting with Angela, If you would have told me that in under 12 weeks I'd be playing Bach, I'd have called you crazy. Angela's strong suit is that she is confident that you can play any piece you put your mind to, regardless of experience, while inspiring and motivating you to do so.

Aside from technique, each lesson was equivalent to a college course in music theory. She understands that technique is only half of playing an instrument and the importance of knowing the reason each note falls where it does. This may sound overwhelming, but Angela never gives you more than you can handle, while challenging you to improve at a rapid pace. It was an extremely gratifying experience and I am thrilled at the progress that I made in under a year.

My husband and I have thoroughly enjoyed taking piano and voice lessons with Angela for a few years now and now our daughter is starting lessons so it's turning into a family affair.

Angela is a fantastic teacher. She is extremely knowledgeable and her enthusiasm and love for music is contagious. She is an incredible cheerleader and always has something good to say about a student's work and the use of their strengths. She builds on strengths very well. And she balances this with useful feedback and goals for improvement.

I cannot recommend her enough!

I am adding a review to override my original 4 star review to a 5 star review. My husband and I have been voice and piano students of Angela for well over a year now and she makes learning music interesting, fun, and challenging. It's intimidating to learn these skills (especially singing) as an adult but she is such a good teacher that we continue to look forward to our lessons and really enjoy learning these skills. She is encouraging and an excellent coach.

My daughter has been going to Angela for 4 years now. She started at 4 years of age, and is now 8 years old. My daughter started with voice lessons, and has since also picked up piano lessons. Now my younger daughter (5 years old) also began taking piano lessons with Angela. I can't imagine another music teacher for my girls. Angela is wonderful. She is professional and every moment of music lessons is complete quality time. I highly recommend Angela as a music teacher for anyone of any ability level!

Only one lesson in, but we made the right choice. Angela is very professional, very well organized, and had planned perfectly for our beginner piano lesson. She was very engaging, on just the right level, and our beginner related to her style and ease in an instant. Could not have been happier with this decision.

It's obvious from the beginning that Angela knows her subject thoroughly and knows how to teach it. She quickly assessed my level of ability and knew what I needed to work on. My singing and confidence improved greatly over just a few lessons. She had useful suggestions for practicing between lessons. My lesson was always fun and over too quickly -- 30 minutes is not enough. Next time I'll sign up for at least a 45-minute lesson.

She also has a great sense of humor. :)

Angela is awesome! She is super patient and doesn't get frustrated when I don't understand something. I am pretty shy and timid, and she can work with that. I also really like that she takes an interest in my life outside of piano lessons, but doesn't let it take over the whole lesson (I'm a talker, so I could definitely chat for 30 minutes unless stopped). Angela moves at a pretty good clip, which is fine with me. I appreciate that she is tailoring the lessons to suit my abilities, rather than a one-size-fits all approach. I feel like I am a part of making choices, when appropriate. At the same time, Angela is confident in respectfully voicing a different opinion, and explaining it. I'm also taking piano lessons with her and appreciate her finding occasions to combine voice and piano opportunities.

A great teacher!

I am probably Angela's oldest pupil (92) and I have seen many teachers, educators and lecturers in my lifetime, but none have equaled Angela for excellence. This young woman teaches the full time allotted to a lesson-a minimum of chit-chat. She is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each pupil and teaches each with these in mind. She is endlessly patient and encouraging, and her enthusiasm for music is contagious; it lifts the spirits of the pupils. She has a thorough academic background in music and this fund of knowledge is used actively in her teaching-pupils cannot get away with anything. Her corrective measures, however, are not harsh or punitive, but gentle and subtle.

I am very proud of Angela and what she has accomplished, and very pleased and lucky to have found her as my piano teacher.

Angela Hall Piano & Theory Lessons

Angela has a bottomless well of patience and understanding.
I've struggled with notation reading forever and can become easily overwhelmed when trying to read music. Also, playing in front of others isn't my strong suit.
That said, Angela has dealt with my issues systematically and mostly transparently. After just 6 months of lessons I'm really reading music and my ability to play in front of others has increased a great deal. Did I mention she does all that with a smile?
On top of being able to make huge improvements towards my real underlying player issues Angela's teaching methods are consistently increasing my musical knowledge and playing technique.
Also, because I have previous theory education, she's able to explain piano to me, not just in "players" terms, but, also from a theoretical view point as well.
The icing is her ability to constantly push me beyond my level of comfort, almost without me even noticing.
Ms. Hall is an all around excellent teacher.
After more than 6 months of lessons with her I have not had a single bad or questionable experience.

Knowledgeable and Fun

Working with Angela has been a very positive experience. She has a good balance of knowledge and out going personality, which makes for some very enjoyable vocal instruction lessons. In the time that she's been teaching me, she's helped to improve my knowledge of music theory, identify and break bad habits, and push my vocal limitations without risk of damaging my vocal chords.
