Piano lessons consist of technique, ear training, music reading, and music theory. NYSSMA preparation is available.
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.
I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.
I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.
Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.
For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.
My system of guitar training includes:
* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;
* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.
* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization
*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice; *Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.
NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.
Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.
*** Lesson Details *** My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.
After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.
Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.
NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.
The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.
The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.
For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.
*** Specialties *** Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!
The ultimate instrument: Learn the notes, how to read, and how to play the songs you want to play. For young students, a strong foundation comes first for unlimited capabilities in the future.
As a younger brother at the age of five, I began studying the piano because my older sister did. After my foundation in music strengthened I fell in love with the trumpet. At first, each note took time to develop and I enjoyed the challenge. The trumpet allowed me to travel all over the Southeast later in life and even to China with a 1940's Radio Show. I enjoyed many top-level bands the kindled my love and passion for good music. I want to share that kindling with my students in a nurturing and guiding situation, just like my teachers gave me. I used to go to lessons and become so motivated and inspired that I thought I could change the world. I always knew that I would want to give back exactly that. As my performance opportunities grew into venues like Churchill Grounds, The Rialto, and The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta
and Radio City Music Hall, 54 Below, The Jazz Standard, Bowery Ballroom, Shapeshifter and Flushing Town Hall in New York, my fire for wanting to develop my teaching did also. I was always thinking back to what my old teachers gave me, inspiration. I then understood that inspiration is the key to success in life.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons will be something the student looks forward to every week. We will work through common method books and learn material that the student has an interest in. For example, some students want to learn to play high notes, a popular song, improvise, or write their own songs. I am a laid back guy, but I do expect effort in the lessons and at home. I believe whatever you put into music is what you get out of it, and I will inspire and motivate the student to get as much out of the lessons as they can. Students will create, with my advisement, and update short term and long term goals every few months.

I have had several lessons so far with Gregory and as an experienced trumpet player can recommend him extremely highly.
I am getting back into the trumpet following a gap after playing for 10 years when I was at high school. Gregory has really helped getting my technique and sound going again, I have been really pleased with my improvement. He has a great demeanour and has been great fun to work with. He is also an excellent player, and is highly reliable and easy to schedule with.

The student must be self-motivated and consistent about his lessons by, self-motivated, I mean, that if it's a child, he should be learning because he wants to learn (not his parents,etc.} There is no one answer to this question (what can students expect from my lessons) because that would depend on the students interests. Ive studied clasical. pop. rock, classic rock, jazz and improvisation. If, for example, the student is an adult who is taking lessons because it's something he wanted to do all of his life, he'll pick a song that he likes and we can start working on it right away. If necessary, I'll transpose it to an easier key, but he won't leave my studio without knowing exactly what he needs to practice until his next lesson. I have been teaching piano for almost 40 years. I have a NY state music teachers license, a masters in music therapy from NYU, and a bachelors in Music Education and AFFA certification. I try to keep the student self-motivated by using music that the student likes, as well as covering the basics. I use props which can be internalized by the student and gradually removed. For example, using stick-on letter names for the notes for a beginner and then removing them one at a time when the student feels ready. I am friendly and very easy going; I'm not a disciplinarian. If a student doesn't practice for some reason, we practice together at the next lesson. If a student doesn't want to practice at all, I can be very creative in motivating them. I don't believe in parents forcing their children to practice, because this tends to turn the child
off. Even though I tell parents that if your child doesn't want to play, please don't force it; I tend to keep students for many years (maybe it's because the student's self-motivation is so important to me and to their success). I also have a lot of experience teaching handicapped individuals as a certified music therapist. The music therapy has enabled me to be a better teacher in general because the therapeutic aspect comes up in all lessons, in one way or another. Music educators focus on the educational goals of music, while music therapists focus more on the therapeutic goals . A therapeutic goal might be increasing concentration span or self-confidence. These issues often need to be addressed in all lessons, and can only help the learning process.
*** Lesson Details *** I am a very easy-going teacher and aim to motivate you. As a music therapist, I have much experience in making each lesson a positive learning experience for you. Most of my professional experience is in teaching piano. Music intrigued me as a child because I saw learning to play as a great challenge. Because learning to play an instrument can be overwhelming to a student, I have learned through years of teaching to make it understandable - to break it down into steps that will leave you feeling a sense of accomplishment and thinking "I can do this". Korg Pa3X keyboard workstation, Yamaha 88 key digital keyboard with Yamaha hammer action (meaning it feels and plays like a real piano - not mushy and easy to press like most keyboards; thereby allowing finger muscle development), Kustom amp, Yamaha 6 string guitar, Ibanez electric guitar, clarinet and a flute. I also have an enormous music library.
*** Travel Equipment *** I play for various events with the Korg Pa3x, where a one person band is required. I also play the acoustic grand pianos in several independent livings centers in Westchester County as an entertainer or to accompany sing-a-longs.

*** Lesson Details *** In my lessons I take a step by step approach on learn how to move and how to understand the instrument at hand. I require all of my students to learn how to read sheet music and how to translate onto their instrument. This one allows the student to follow a professional path on the future, or maybe go into a music college.
