I have been thrilled with my lessons with Ashley! She is exceptionally skilled and makes me feel comfortable and encouraged. Acting can make one feel very vulnerable, so I appreciate that studying with Ashley has given me a safe space to grow and experiment with my craft.

I am a seasoned language teacher, of both adults and children. Making languages come alive through interesting anecdotes, songs, and stories, is my specialty. My schooling, from age four to 14, was 100% in French. Boy, did those nuns drill us in grammar!

About Bettina

I grew up in Sweden, speaking Swedish at home, but going to French school. At age four, I was immersed in a French environment, and had to sink or swim. I swam! In my late teens, my family moved to Israel, so I became fluent in Hebrew as well. I understand a lot about the language acquisition proces

Bettina is very kind and patient. I only take one class a week and my memory is not always great but she takes the time to remind me what I have learned in past lessons. She is great!

My native language is English. The decision for me to invest in a tutor was so that I could better tune my self-taught Hebrew, specifically pronunciation of words. My current focus is on Biblical Hebrew, but I would like to one day be able to converse in the language. I chose Bettina for her well-rounded background and experience with the Hebrew language. (And her profile said she was patient :-) Since the start of our sessions, Bettina has provided just what I needed: clearly identifying the parts of my pronunciation that need tuning. We take turns reading the text, so I can both hear and practice verbal skills. When I mispronounce a word - Bettina stops me, clearly instructs the correct way to pronounce, and I repeat the text until correct. She has also shown great patience as I ask my many questions ranging from the language and Biblical-modern Hebrew differences to history and aspects of the culture. This engagement has helped my understanding of the language and (of course) created more curiosity and inspiration to learn more. I am blessed to have the pleasure of learning from Bettina and look forward to her next instruction.

Roula is a one of a kind instructor! It also doesn't hurt that she is funny and makes you laugh. She is detail oriented and able to adapt to your way of learning.

I appreciate that she proactively checks in to make sure her style of teaching is working for you and adjusts accordingly.

It was very difficult for me to find an instructor who is certified to teach AND who also specializes in teaching Arabic spoken in the Levant and Lebanon. If you are also looking for this particular specialty, Roula is the instructor you need.

Thank you Roula!

Being born and raised in Geneva, the French-speaking part of Switzerland, French is my mother tongue. With a Swiss degree of pediatric nursing and teaching, I worked more than 15 years with children, families and adult learners. Finding the best way to learn depending on who you are and what goals you have is one of my specialties. I like to provide a dynamic and a fun learning environment to high schoolers and adults.
Having learnt multiple second languages, such as English, Italian, Spanish and German, I’m very aware of the process of learning a new language.
I can provide vocabulary, grammar, verbs, conversation as well as cultural aspects from different French speaking countries, as I was working with people from France and I spent 3 years in Montreal, Quebec.
I moved to Richmond four years ago, bringing many French books and ressources that could be used during lessons.

Working with Johnathan has been a joy.

It was my purpose setting out to study music in general, not just to study an instrument but to use the instrument as a means of approaching music in the abstract. I set out to study music’s mechanics and theoretical foundations.

Jonathan is very knowledgeable and very meticulous. He has a precise and analytical sort of mind, and very strong foundations in his classical training.

To have a wealth of knowledge in one's subject is not enough, one also has to know how to teach (which is a whole skillset of its own). It is clear Jonathan is an experienced teacher. I have never felt rushed with Jonathan, he is very generous with his time. He provides ample resources for study outside of our sessions, and is quick to respond to emails. He has lent me books, sent me links to videos, and provided me with plenty of homework.

Jonathan has also been very accommodating in allowing me to have some authority in planning lessons and exploring my own interests. Particularly I wanted to study modal music and found a folk song in the Locrian Mode. We took a break from the Suzuki work we had been doing and he helped me transcribe the song and practice.

I could not recommend Jonathan enough, I am switching focus from violin to piano for the time being and will be employing him as my piano tutor, and I’m very much considering taking spanish lessons under his tutelage as well.
Ian S.
Ian Really enjoyed his lesson. Jonathan is very knowledgeable and helped Ian with his basic skills and gave him great pointers. He also gave him an outline and daily practice requirements.
Jordan
Jordan really enjoyed his first lesson. Jonathan validated for him that the daily work he is putting in is helpful and gave him small steps to go forward with.

I'd easily rank Philippe among the best I've had, as he readily adjusted to my pace of learning and desired learning objectives, pushed me to improve but didn't force his own agenda, and maintained a great, positive, and motivating attitude throughout our experience.
