Josh is always easy to be around and is able to form any lesson around what I wanted to do, as well as teach me loads of new ideas if I hadn’t planned anything. He has greatly helped improve my own production and give me insight into what professional producers do to set themselves apart. He’s great to work with and always in an uplifting mood.

Josh is an awesome teacher. He is patient and supportive and always comes up with ways to connect me to the concept he’s teaching. I asked to learn drums “the right way” so we spend a ton of time on fundamental exercises that i suspect are boring for him but he never shows it. He is always upbeat and positive and I enjoy our lessons a lot. Could not recommend him more highly.

I can teach how to read, listen, interpret, improvise and evolve many musical skills.

Gregg was my musical instructor during the early 1980ties. What I learned in a few lessons with him was more that I could have expected. I was primarily focused on percussion, of which his vast knowledge was highly dynamic. I learned about poly-rhythms, Indian ti-hies, and complex time signatures. He had available much reference material that he provided me. And over the years his musical insights have not only supplemented my inquiries, but made me a better musician and person. I hope you have a chance to study with Gregg, as you will be introduced to a new and better way of musicianship!

My first priority is to inspire and motive. Find out the students wants and needs, then tackle them head on. Exploring proper voice techniques and how to use the voice. Proper breathing technique. Learn music theory fundamentals and understanding the language of music so it can be applied to the voice. Phrasing, intonation and song building.

Private study of music theory with me is highly individualized. For beginners, we will start with the basics of tonality, intervallic relationships, rhythm, and ear training. We will then progress into a study of harmony, musical modes, mixed meter, etc. Lessons can be done in conjunction with piano instruction if possible. I always like to use audio recordings and sheet music of recognizable compositions, both contemporary and classical, to augment a student's understanding of concepts.

Since I first stepped foot in Los Angeles seven years ago, I've devoted myself to pursuing a career of musical passion and excellence. Have you hit a roadblock in your trumpet playing? Is your child not seeing progress from playing in their school band? Need help with your All-State audition? Picking up a hobby for the quarantine? Look no further!

My approach to the trumpet is one that starts with the sound of the music playing in my head. Once I can get you to hear beautiful trumpet sounds playing in your own head, you will find that playing the trumpet is as easy as blowing spit wads through a straw!

My students get a weekly dose of fundamentals that include long tones, flexibility, and articulation. Once those are in place, we can apply those skills learned to a musical etude. You can expect to cover as much material (or as little) as you want in a given week; I will pace your lessons according to your ability level and desire. But with the right amount of deliberate practice, I can help you become a truly great trumpeter.

Let's get this fired up!

About Ruben

Ruben has been teaching private lessons since 2014 and is currently available to teach lessons at your home, at his studio, and online. His students have gone on to audition into honor bands, and play solos for competitions and festivals. Ruben received his training at Western Oregon University

Ruben is a very passionate trumpet player who’s plays and teaches from the heart. He’s a very patient and enthusiastic teacher who believes in his students. I was impressed with his philosophy that each student has a “trumpet voice” within them that he can help them find. It made a lot of sense to me and has inspired me. Thanks for all you do Ruben!
Hayden H.
Hayden really enjoyed his first lesson with Ruben. Ruben was skilled at making it work in an online format. My son is a bit shy, but Ruben is friendly and very encouraging.

There is more to a performance than just singing well. It is important to engage your audience by adding real emotion to your songs as well as knowing what to do with your body and how to move with confidence and control. Performing means knowing how to work the crowd and leave them wanting more.
