I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

the mid-70s. I became an assistant to composer and author of "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization" copyrighted by George Russell. I also leaned music theory traditionally. Students can learn all definable chord types, intervals and rhythms etc. I am a composer, guitarist and percussionist, who has the ability to share this information with my students !

Gregg was my musical instructor during the early 1980ties. What I learned in a few lessons with him was more that I could have expected. I was primarily focused on percussion, of which his vast knowledge was highly dynamic. I learned about poly-rhythms, Indian ti-hies, and complex time signatures. He had available much reference material that he provided me. And over the years his musical insights have not only supplemented my inquiries, but made me a better musician and person. A thorough understanding of music theory can be of tremendous help to any musician, regardless of the instrument. As a guitar teacher, I usually teach music theory as it relates to the guitar. If the guitar is not your main instrument, I will explain certain concepts via piano/keyboard.

Depending on your background, we can start with basic music notation or jump straight into modal harmony or other topics.

My music theory lessons cover a lot of the material that is taught at Berklee's harmony courses. I would give you weekly assignments, so you can get some hands-on experience and deepen your understanding of the material. In essence, you can get a Berklee-like music theory education for a fraction of the cost at your own speed.

If you are looking for an instructor who is patient, willing to go at your pace, and answer all your questions, then, Andy is the instructor for you. I have been taking online lessons with him for over a year and have learned a lot. I always believed that you needed a skill to be able to play an instrument but I have come to learn that it takes passion, practice, and a very good teacher. I highly recommend Andy.

No better guitar teacher than Andy. I began with him when I was 10, and was able to progressive extremely because of his knowledge and methods of teaching. I am now 21 living in Paris, playing gigs and still remember and have all those sheets of scales he gave me years ago!

The beginning student of Music Theory will be expected to read music, or be swiftly taught to do so. We will explore what all of the notations on a piece of music mean, and the basics of harmony and melody.

The intermediate student of Music Theory will begin working with the rules of functional harmony and explore these via composition and exercises. Ear training will also be incorporated into this lessons. We will analyze and listen to the great classical pieces to understand these principles of functional harmony.

The advanced student of Music Theory will learn when to break from the rules and how to do so coherently. We will touch on Music History to see how past composers have done so, and continue work with composition and analysis.

My daughter just took her first lesson with Tegan. Tegan was very professional, friendly, patient and put my daughter at ease right from the start. Born in Minneapolis, MN, Victor Mooney began playing cello at the age of 7. While in Minneapolis he studied with Tom Austin, former member of the Minnesota Opera. Victor completed a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Iowa State University, where he studied with George Work. Upon graduation he was awarded the Outstanding Senior in Music award, the highest honor the Music Department at Iowa State gives. While in undergrad he also received a scholarship for excellence in performance. In the fall of 2015, Victor pursued a Master's of Music degree in Cello Performance at The Boston Conservatory, where he studied with Andrew Mark. He has participated in master classes with Anthony Ross, Tanya Remenikova, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Hong Wang, Bruce Uchimura, Wes Baldwin, Theodore Buckholz, and Joshua Koestenbaum. From 2013 to 2015 he played regularly with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. While at Iowa State University he had the opportunity to sit Principle Cello in both the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra and the Iowa State University Chamber Orchestra. Along with teaching privately in his Boston Studio, Victor also teaches for the Brookline Adult and Community Education Center. As a 40 year old beginner I was a little nervous about the whole online experience as well as starting a new instrument. Victor makes the online teaching experience seamless. Victor is calm, thoughtful and patient. He always finds a way to explain something in a way that relates to me specifically. To do this someone must be able to listen as well as teach. This is quality I have not found in all of my teachers/instructors/coaches throught the years. Victor is also easily the most flexible of any teacher I have had. He always finds a way to accommodate my schedule and works around any issues that arise. I have really enjoyed my learning experience thus far and look forward to each lesson. I would not hesitate to recommend Victor to anyone looking to learn the cello.

I was a pianist and oboist in my early life, and now in my 40s decided that I'd love to learn to play the cello. Victor is a really wonderful teacher. He's very patient, very calm, and very responsive. Whenever I would message him, he'd respond within a few hours, and often he'd respond right away. He was very flexible when schedules changed. Whenever I would run into problems or issues with a new technique, he would find resources, such as videos, to help describe it more fully. I've had many music teachers over the years and Victor is absolutely one of the best.

I am a young professional flute and piccolo player from Argentina where I received my Bachelors of Music in Flute Performance from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo.
My passion for music took me to Europe where I completed my post graduate studies with a Masters in Flute Performance (2012-2014) and a Masters in Flute Pedagogy (2014-2017) both from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Zurich University of the Arts), in Switzerland.
I started teaching flute in 2009 in a national program inspired in "El Sistema" which provides music lessons for kids all over the country. Since then I have taught privately in Spanish, English and German to people of all ages, levels and from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
As a musician I take part in orchestral and chamber music projects in Argentina, Switzerland and since last summer in Boston as well.
Besides the importance of learning the technique to play the flute, what I enjoy the most is the unique opportunity to communicate with others through the instrument, through the music and without words, regardless of your level. I am looking forward to share this passion with you!

I am a composer and a singer, studying for my masters at the Longy School of Music. Music theory helps in providing a grounding for which much of western music is developed on. An understanding of music theory can help with realizing why the composer wrote the piece the way they wrote it, giving you a better insight into how to perform it. Music theory can also help you learn how to compose your own music. It is also a subject you’re expected to study should you wish to study music in higher academia.

For my beginner students, we’re going to start from the absolute beginning. I’m going to teach you how to read music, show how the music on the page represents what’s played on a piano or your instrument, teach you fundamentals of scales, keys, and chords. Further into the course, we’ll be writing our own simple melodies and I’ll be teaching you counterpoint (writing two melodies to be played together) and 4-part choir harmony.

I am a soprano, composer, and visual artist. I have a bachelors degree in composition with voice as my main instrument and I'm currently pursuing my Masters degree in Voice and Composition at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge.

For voice students, I focus on helping students explore their own unique sound, see what they can do with that sound and develop it fully. Other things I incorporate into my lessons are acting techniques, stage presence, ear training, and breathing techniques. Some genres I teach are contemporary classical, musical theater, cabaret, opera, baroque, and common-practice repertoire. Note: I will not take voice students under 12. These are the only lessons I teach with an age limit.

For composition students, I help them discover what their creative mind has to offer fo them. For beginner students, I'll give

I am a professional songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and recording artist. I graduated from Wesleyan University with a Bachelors of Music, specifically Jazz and Music Production.

Music Theory students can expect to work each week on understanding core music theory concepts. I teach beginner and intermediate piano students. I've been playing piano for 10+ years with a concentration in contemporary keyboard and musical theater. Depending on the needs of the student, we can work on sight reading and classical technique, or learning how to read chord sheets and tabs online in order to play contemporary songs.

As a professional touring and recording artist, I like to work songwriting into all of my lesson plans. For any student particularly interested in songwriting, I can make that a much larger portion of the lessons. Songwriting is a uniquely intimate art. Rather than tell a student how I think they should write songs, I strive to empower the student to be able to make the artistic decisions that they want. By making conscious decisions based on their musical knowledge, the student can grow his or her's own unique songwriting voice.

My personal passion is contemporary songwriting, but my own musical journey included many genres like Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Theater, and more.
