Fiddle is another name for the bowed string musical instrument more often called a violin, and is the term for the instrument used by players in all genres, including classical music. Fiddle playing, or fiddling, refers to various styles of music. Fiddle is also a common term among musicians who play folk music on the violin. Lessons would start with the basics: Tuning, hand/bow technique, placement, ear training, notes, reading, songs, scales, theory and learning how to take a solo.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

I have a classical background in addition to playing Texas style fiddle music. This experience allows me to teach my students how to read music and basic music theory in addition to how to learn to play a song by ear. I am very flexible as far as scheduling and I am dependable. My goal has always been to share the freedom and fun that self expression through music can provide. Therefore, if there are times when various life events take precedents over your practice time, I will not condemn or lecture you.

About Shawna

I have been playing classical music since I was 4 years old and I was introduced to fiddling when I was 6 and I am now 42. My interaction with various teachers over the years has given me the opportunity to experience different styles of teaching and develop my own style based on what worked for m

I love teaching students what THEY want to learn, while providing them with a solid foundation on their instrument. I will cater the lesson to the needs of the student and make it fun, because music is meant to be fun. I can help students learn music of their choice, or I can come up with some music to get them started. If they want to to learn music by ear, read music, improvise, or learn new tunes, I love teaching all of those things!

About Alani

I am a fiddle, mandolin, and guitar player with a passion for bluegrass and old time music. I love to perform and have had the opportunity to share the stage with many of my hero's. Over my years of learning and playing this music, I have been taught and mentored by many amazing musicians, which

Alani is very personable and easy to communicate with. She quickly assessed my strengths and weaknesses and gave me immediate feedback to improve on my concerns. Very positive and encouraging. She is also able and willing to work on what I’m interested in but also points out things she thinks I need to improve on. On my first lesson she started me on some embellishments for a tune I had started teaching myself (Whiskey Before Breakfast) a made a recording for me. 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻

"What a wonderful and enthusiastic teacher! My daughter has had fiddle lessons for 2 years in person, and to finally cut down on our two-hour commute I suggested on-line lessons. The computer had a few connection issues on our end that we will definitely iron out before our next session. Lucky for us, Kathleen worked patiently through the connectivity bumps and gave a very upbeat, challenging lesson with all the backup sheet music, recording, and plenty of thumbs up to keep my daughter motivated and practising. We are very happy we "found" Kathleen and highly recommend her as an instructor!!"

What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
