Guitar Lessons in Glendale

Becky S. - Guitar Teacher in Glendale

Burgeoning guitar players in Glendale can find inspiration in every direction. From the array of diverse small venues in Glendale, to the classic Los Angeles hotspots in nearby neighborhoods, there are tons of things to inspire you and your guitar playing.

Amoeba Amoeba in Hollywood is the music store to fulfill any audiophile's fantasy. This giant music store lures fans with its city block wide music selection and frequent in-store events. Get lost in the aisles of unexpected and familiar genres around the store and treat yourself to an unusual CD from the dollar bin - a perfectly fun option for music students who are just getting started with guitar lessons in Glendale. Their annual Mardi Gras "parade" particularly embodies the store's fun and silliness and should not be missed.

If you're in the mood to browse for music but aren't in the mood for an Amoeba-level wandering, Atomic Records in Burbank is a smaller, but just as mighty music shop even closer to Glendale.

For large scale tours and big name bands, The Hollywood Bowl, L.A. Live, The Wiltern, and The Greek (to name a few) are just a skip away. These power houses are must-stop venues for most North American tours. What’s a better way to get inspired after a few guitar lessons in Glendale then to watch the professionals take the stage?

Amphitheaters like The Hollywood Bowl and The Greek let you wave your (figurative) California flag high as you enjoy music in the open air.

If you're just in the mood for drooling over some truly beautiful guitars, Imperial Vintage Guitars in Burbank and Sherman Oaks offers plenty of eye candy. They also boast a repair shop, should you find yourself in need. Grayson's Tune Town is a guitar shop right in Glendale that does repairs and offers rental options if you are just getting to know the type of guitars you enjoy playing.

In Glendale, live music venues are everywhere. Watching local artists in small venues can really connect you in to your local musician network, as well as inspire you to keep practicing.

Left Coast Wine Bar & Gallery offers a cozy upstairs loft where intimate acts compliment the relaxed lounge. On Sundays, they have an open mic night, where you can get up on stage yourself. Open mic nights are a perfect way to show off that you have been taking guitar lessons in Glendale and keeping up with your practicing.

Complex is Glendale's finest gritty bar venue. This is the type of place where garage bands pay their dues and have a good time doing it.

Jax Bar & Grill is a must for local jazz lovers. Steamy acts are served up seven nights a week.

Though Glendale's local music venues lean in the direction of bars, a short trip to North Hollywood's Republic of Pie offers a classic coffee shop venue for music lovers of all ages. Here, all sorts of acts perform, and all go great with a cup of coffee or a slice of pie. Squashy couches and chairs make this a very comfortable place to enjoy music.

Now you know where to go, get out there and enjoy! The more you listen to and explore the things you love about music, the more proud you can be of all the steps you are taking to be a part of the music community! So what are you waiting for? Sign up for guitar lessons in Glendale now!

See you around town!

About Omar
My passion is sharing music with people.

I love to answer questions and learn things I don't know, I know a good amount about guitar repair, improvised instrument building, how to buy a good instrument and not spend to much, and I have a vast knowledge of obscure instruments, and audio production as well. Feel free to ask me questions, and expect informative non-judgmental answers.

I have spent a lot of time developing as a vocalist, songwriter, composer and producer, which helps me in all aspects of my music and teaching, I'm always looking to learn more. I have played in heavy metal bands, but have also done solo acoustic singer/songwriting stuff, I have produced raw hip-hop but also love old soul and ska tunes. Being well rounded musically and drawing from lots of influences is what makes me a good teacher and shapes me as a m
usician.

As an artist I have been featured on MTV, Rollingstone, BBC, NBC, VOA, ARY, Alt Press, LA times, documentaries and more. I have been playing guitar and recording music since childhood and am a classically trained sitar player and Indian classical vocalist.

I am a great teacher for someone who wants to write songs, or is into Indie, rock, pop, reggae, metal, hip-hop, and electronica.

I am trained in piano, but never had any guitar or ukulele experience prior to meeting Omar. Omar figured out my aspirations and skill level in no time and got me strumming songs in less than 4 weeks. Now I lull my kids to sleep with my ukulele and they sing along.

I teach all popular style..rock, jazz, blues, country, R&B, funk,, etc. I also teach beginning classical.

I can teach reading, theory and technique.

I have taught these subjects full time for 15 years.

I am very patient and adjust areas of study to fit my students goals.

About Kimberly
I started playing music around the Kansas City area twenty five years ago. I graduated from The University of Southern California with a degree in studio/jazz guitar (cum laude). While at USC, I received a merit scholarship and an award for professional leadership and service within her department. I also graduated with honors from Musicians Institute (GIT), of Hollywood, CA.

I have toured the U.S. and Canada playing venues such as The Portland Rose Festival, The Playboy Jazz Festival, The Santa Monica Twilight Concert Series, Irvine Lake Blues Festival,The Burnaby British Columbia Blues Festival and the Long Beach Blues Festival. The headliners at these events included Robben Ford, The Neville Brothers, and Johnny Winter.

I have released two solo CD's that have received first-rate reviews, as well as international airplay. Af
ter the second CD, I was biographied for AMG (All Music Guide) the internet's first source for music information. Here are excerpts from the AMG bio:

... there are also elements of Jimi Hendrix (arguably the first true heavy metal/hard rock artist), Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan in her playing, and she clearly has a strong appreciation of jazz--not only jazz-rock fusion improvisers like John Scofield, Larry Coryell and Mahavishnu Orchestra founder John McLaughlin, but also, straight-ahead bop favorites such as Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass.......eclectic outlook is one of her strong points; her ability to move from a tough, aggressive blues-rock groove to a more cerebral, fusion-minded approach to the occasional soul-jazz/hard bop number has made for some very unpredictable albums.

I have been teaching full-time for the past 15years. I have taught all ages and popular styles. In 2008, my blues guitar method was published and distributed through Amazon.

I incorporate a tailored curriculum to help people achieve their personal goals. Learning music is not a "one-size fits all" proposition. I can show you the songs that you want to play. I can also teach you music theory, technique, improvisation, reading and more. I adjust your course of study according to your areas of interest. If you are dying to learn a Led Zeppelin tune, or are planning on auditioning for a college level jazz guitar program, I can help you achieve these goals. I have taught hundreds of beginners along side more advanced students. My students have gone one to study music at GIT, Fullerton College, Pasadena City College, Berklee, Cal State LA, and USC.

Most of all, I am extremely patient. The ability to playing a musical instrument is measure on a calendar, not on a watch. I often work at a slow, systematic pace. I am generally very laid-back. On the other hand, if you learn very quickly, I can readily show you the skills you need to meet your goal. I have fast-tracked many individuals that were seeking admittance to an academic program.

My teaching studio is computer equipped. This allows me to incorporate computer software that enhances learning. One such program, Band in a Box, generates accompaniment for students so that they can work on their soloing skills. Another program can slow recorded music down so that the student can practice slowly with it. Also, I often give out play-along practice CDs for improved learning.

The aspect of performance is often not addressed by many. I am able to work with my guitar students while accompanying by performing live bass or drum parts, or work with bass students while playing the guitar or drum parts. This allows the student to understand his or her roll in an live band.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Dedicated music room room w/ guitars, bass, drum set, pa system, and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I teach all popular guitar and bass styles.
I am a expert in Jazz, Blues, and R&B. (degree in Studio/Jazz guitar)
Great with theory, technique and reading.
Have given recording lessons with CUBASE.

Brian has been teaching guitar to students of all ages in the Los Angeles area for more than 20 years. With a broad range of musical skills and performing experience that include Rock, Jazz, Blues and Folk music, Brian brings his boundless enthusiasm and love of the guitar into the studio with each of his students, who learn an approach to learning music that includes technique, music theory, performance as well the skill to sing and play. Students of all ages are welcome!

Brian's teaching philosophy, in his own words:

MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

* the uniqueness of each student;
* the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
* the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
* the development of musicianship through performance.

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply ...

About Brian
Brian discovered his talent and passion for teaching while still in college, and has been teaching guitar and piano in Southern California for over 20 years. Gifted at teaching students of all ages and abilities, he combines patience, creativity, imagination and boundless enthusiasm with solid professional training and experience. Brian also has over 10 years experience teaching piano and guitar to blind and autistic students.

A lifelong musician, Brian received his first musical training at the age of 4 and 5 years when his actor/singer Dad and musically talented Grandma taught him to sing and play the mandolin. He began piano lessons at age 5, and formal guitar instruction at the age of 10 years.

By the time he was a 14-year-old high school student, Brian was performing as lead guitarist in rock bands around Southern California
, developing mastery of rock guitar and blues performance and improvisation. Brian went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.

Passionate about all kinds of music, Brian's studies include choral music and conducting, Gregorian chant (at the Monastery of St. Pierre de Solesmes, France), and Master Classes with Andrés Segovia and Christopher Parkening. In 1984, he participated as a member of the Honor Choir for the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which included recording of original music by Philip Glass for the Olympic Games under the direction of David L. Wolper and Mr. Glass.

As a jazz guitarist, Brian continues to grow musically in association with his colleagues of the Naomi Jazz Group, and other close musical friends who include students of the late, great Ted Greene.

MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

• the uniqueness of each student;
• the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
• the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
• the development of musicianship through performance.

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply appropriate teaching techniques to maximize their potential. I gear my lesson plans to the individual and strive to optimize the learning potential of the student.

ENJOYMENT MAXIMIZES LEARNING:
In a lesson with me you can expect to never be bored, to laugh a lot, learn a lot, be positively engaged emotionally and challenged intellectually. I believe that learning is maximized when the student is enjoying the experience, and is faced with challenges appropriate to their skill level. I aim to make learning music fun, choosing musical selections to learn in the style and genre that relate to the student's interests and aspiration.

TECHNIQUE & UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC THEORY TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE:
When my students perform in concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recording sessions or simply for friends and family, they have self-confidence because they know precisely the "how" and "why" of everything required to perform well. My goal with students is to build a solid foundation in instrumental technique and thorough understanding of Music Theory at their appropriate level.

PERFORMANCE:
On a monthly basis, all my students practice performing pieces they are working on during the lesson time, with family/friends as an audience if desired and appropriate, and/or using digital recording to help the student develop a critical ear for their own playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stands, guitar/s and guitar stands, Dynarelle cushion, footrests, Korg 88 fully--weighted digital keyboard, Zoom H4 digital recorder.

As well, I have guitars and equipment both for teaching and performance of various styles, as below. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, play and become familiar with any of these instruments/equipment according to their interests and skill levels.

GUITARS:

CLASSICAL: Ramirez Model 1A Classical (professional concert level instrument)
Cordoba (teaching/practice instrument)
Hohner Acoustic (electric)

ROCK: Fender Stratocaster (pre-CBS)
Shechter Omen6
Shechter Elite Series C1

FOLK: Martin (steel string)
Dobro

JAZZ: Oscar Schmidt by Washburn (hollow body electric)
Gibson SG (electric)

OTHER EQUIPMENT:

AMPS: Fender Twin reverb
Pevey practice amp
Rock amp

Boss GT8 Effects Pedal

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar stands, guitar/s, Zoom H4 digital recorder. Generally I do not transport my Korg 88 keyboard to the student's home for lessons, but I can if necessary. However, I do require that piano students have their own piano/keyboard or at least reliable access to one for practice between lessons.

Guitar students should also have their own guitar. I can advise on appropriate instruments and can help students find a suitable guitar for their learning level and price range.

I have approximately taken ten or twelve lessons. I started from scratch, and Brian's input and guidance has helped me to move along pretty fast in my learning. My ear is becoming more selective. My fingers are more and more flexible. My idea of learning piano was to do so, in order to play for me and maybe one or two more people. I've learned with Brian that even if that is the case, I must still handle myself, as if I am going to be part of a band. This is teaching me the importance of counting and keeping the rhythm for me and for others. It basically helps me to have a structure. Thank you Brian

Depending on what YOU, the student, want to learn and explore with the guitar..

About Daniel
Daniel is more than just a guitar teacher, his intimate kowledge of an array of instruments, makes his approach to teaching Guitar more immersive to the student without confusing them. Daniel’s passion for teaching as well as learning instruments allows him to connect to the student and get them excited to learn. Daniel’s background in various musical groups and organizations allows him to understand how students may feel the first day of teaching and how to relate the music to their age and goals. Daniel also understand the importance of breaks and stretching between practicing and lessons. Daniel not only teaches students how to play their pieces but how to properly relax hands and take mental breaks th
roughout the lessons and during practice. Daniel’s motto isn’t just to teach Guitar but to really involve the student in all aspects of learning guitar, getting the student to engage in the pieces, teaching them how to properly warm up before and after pieces, and how to stretch and approach difficult pieces by allowing mental breaks and keeping the environment light and fun.

About Anja
About me:
Based out of LA, I'm a professional guitarist with a dynamic sound. I balance work as a session guitarist, solo artist, and teacher. I can teach you whatever you'd like to learn on acoustic or electric guitar! Jazz, rock, blues, soul, pop, latin, and more.

About my teaching background:
I've been teaching for almost a decade and I love helping my students learn. In addition to years of study on the guitar, I have studied different methods and approaches to music education. These include but are not limited to the Kodály Method, the Orff-Schulwerk approach, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and Gordon Music Learning Theory.

About my musical background:
My earliest influences were blues and rock guitarists such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Jimi Hendrix. Later, I fell in love with jazz as well - though I am just as into things like f
olk music and heavy metal! I studied guitar in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Mark Koch (Pat Martino) and R.J. Zimmerman (Aaron Shearer). I am an avid performer as well as an educator.

What our lessons will be like:
I am passionate about teaching. We'll work on reaching YOUR goals and playing the music YOU want to play. I'll help you build a strong foundation for all things musical - theory, technique, song repertoire, etc. But we'll do it in a way that's tied to actually making music and experiencing music. We'll learn by doing, and we'll play as much as we talk - if not more!

She not only cares about their growth as technical musicians, but their growth in all facets of music education/leadership. She acts as a mentor and guide for her students as they find their passion.

We were lucky enough to have Anja teach my son electric guitar and piano for about two years. During that time, she inspired him to love both instruments. Her attention to technical detail is excellent; she spent a lot of time making sure that his finger positions were correct so that he learned how to play right the first time. S

he introduced him to some great music and also gave him the leeway to work on music that he gravitated towards. The results were amazing. He became very proficient very quickly, and most importantly, started to love playing music.

Anja is very personable and is great at motivating kids. My son loved working with her and we did too!

My daughter started ukulele lessons with Anja when she was 6, then moved to guitar at 8. Anja motivated my daughter and inspired her to want to play and practice. She gave her a confidence from the very beginning. When I ask my daughter why she liked Anja so much, she says it's because Anja is "nice, funny and a really good guitar player." We couldn't have asked for a better instructor.

I have a huge passion for teaching and playing guitar. I also teach you a wide variety of music such as rock, metal, blues, etc. This helps you not get stuck with one style of playing. I can teach all ages. I'm very patient and I'll always work at your level, so I won't go too fast for you. I'm dependable and always on time. After studying with me you will have a good understanding of music theory, a complete understanding of the instrument, how to write your own music, and how to play multiple different genres of music.

About Phoenix
