The Guitar Scene in Riverside

By Taylor P. - Riverside Guitar Teacher

Learning to play and perform the guitar can be a fun and challenging experience. TakeLessons has qualified music instructors in the Riverside area who can assist students in their quest for musical growth. Whether you are interested in playing in the comfort of your home or performing on stage, teachers continue to help and inspire students to develop their talents from proper technique of the instrument to stage presence.

For the student who is interested in taking guitar lessons in Riverside with the performance aspect in mind, Riverside has many places and various hot spots for local musicians to get involved and become an active part of the music community. Local Coffee houses such as Jazz-n-Java, Back to the Grind and Borders host weekly open mic nights for musicians of all styles and skill levels to perform. Local restaurants and bars such as The Plum House, Lake Alice and Romano’s also host open mic nights and feature local bands on various nights.

Downtown Riverside hosts a monthly Art Walk on the first Thursday of every month. This event is open to the public and an excellent place to see and meet local musicians. The Riverside Plaza is another place to enjoy local music from genres ranging from Rock to Jazz, Blues and Swing. Schedules and lineups are available online as well as in the Inland Empire Weekly, a local paper specializing in the local music and art scene.

Riverside is also home to the historical Fox Performing Arts Center, which features performances by a wide variety of well known and respected music artists. Another favorite amongst guitarists is Wild West Guitars and the exclusive Voodoo Lounge. Featuring big names in the guitar community and a collection of prized instruments, these sites are a must see for any aspiring guitarist. The Fender Museum (just outside of Riverside) is also a fascinating place for a guitarist to visit as well as to see big names perform.

As a teacher and performer, I always stress the importance of attending concerts and seeing local artists play to my students who are taking guitar lessons in Riverside. It’s a way of learning through others, getting perspective, and becoming inspired. I enjoy hearing my students talk about how a certain musician inspired them after seeing a performance. Being involved in the music community is beneficial to all music students who are taking guitar lessons in Riverside. Networking and meeting with other musicians is how ideas can develop and grow.

About Frank
ABOUT MYSELF
I started late on the guitar in a family of musicians. I picked up the guitar when I was 18 years old when I found an old acoustic at my grandfather’s house. From then I was self taught listening to Punk Rock, New Wave, and learning from friends. My love for the instrument and music drove me to really apply myself to really learning how to play. I would sit and just be creative, writing my own songs and putting little back yard bands together with my cousin and friends. Then, it was time for college and had to make a decision on what to study. Music was my passion and I never really taken a lesson before. I prepared myself by studying with Stephan Ferrara-Grand in San Clemente,CA for a short time to audition into the music program. I passed! I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the San Diego State University School of M
usic and Dance in 1999, and I studied jazz guitar with international guitarist/violinist Art Johnson and theory with David Ward-Steinman. From the time I graduated, I have been playing professionally and recorded five releases of my own as well as made appearances on others and have toured the country several times playing my own original music. My bands have opened and/or toured with the likes of Dee Dee Ramone, Blink 182, Green Day, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Jimmy Eat World, Ten Foot Pole, Big Drill Car, and Leeland. I also play for Day 7 and Revival Christian Fellowship where I shared a stage with Greg Laurie, Franklin Graham, Raul Reis, and Jon Courson.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching music for over 10 years. I love my lessons to be laid back, light, yet focused. The lessons are tailored for the students needs/levels. For the beginning student we start from the basics. for example, tuning, vocabulary on the parts of the guitar, to basic chord shapes and strum patterns. Almost from the beginning, I introduce music theory to the student. I believe it is important to the musician, because music is a language that is spoken through the instrument and also read by the musician. Not just piano or band instruments, but guitar too! Guitarist always seem to get left behind in this. I teach it hand in hand with the guitar and it comes naturally while learning. Some students want to learn songs and/or to write songs. This is what I have been doing for many years and enjoy it! As the student progresses, I love to pull the creativity out of the students. Music is also art and a passage for the individual to express him/herself. It is a joy to see and help a musician to mature on the instrument!

About Richard
I have studied, performed and taught music for over 30 years. Accordion was my first instrument at age 7 which was a great introduction to the keyboard, melody and harmony. I have also performed at the Cape Cod Jazz Festival, The Bakersfield Jazz Festival and numerous club dates and private functions throughout New York, New England and California.

I've been teaching music for 15 yrs on guitar, piano, bass, cello and bass. My students have ranged from from 5yrs to 75yrs of age. I have seen many student go on to join orchestras, bands, broadway shows or simply continued their education to a university or college. Being able to read music profeciently has given me the opportunity to teach off many method books but like to use Alfred Method, Mel Bay and Frederick Noad Method books. I teach many styles ranging from classical, jazz & blues, rock, contemporary and pop. I do stress and recommend all my students to learn how to read music and usually by our second or third lesson they will playing simple songs. I am here to help you make music!

About OMAR
Knowing that you are looking for a instructor to teach you music puts a smile on my face. You see, music has been a part of my life since the age of 3. Some of my first memories are of me accompanying my father at home with his rehearsals or just singing together to have fun as a family. I believe music is a gift that unites people together bringing out our deepest emotions that words cannot express. At the age of 5 I received an organ and from that point on I embarked on a long life journey to indulge and learn more about music. In elementary, junior high and high school I was involved in any subject dealing with music. I joined school choirs, orchestras, bands, marching bands, jazz bands, musicals you name it. While enjoying all school music activities I was selected to join in honor county and state orchestras and choirs. In junior h
igh and high school I was selected to play for the Junior Pacific Symphony Orchestra, received scholarships to music summer camps, and was selected musician of the year. In college my quest continued with the Orange Coast College Orchestra, Praise Symphony Orchestra, Vanguard University Orchestra as well as guitar ensembles and college choir groups. I've also taken private lessons from Dr. Art David (Julliard graduate) in stand up bass as well as David Black (Pacific Symphony Orchestra) and classical guitar with Richard Glenn and David Murray. I've been teaching now for 15 years in guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, stand up bass, cello, piano and voice ranging from 5 yr old to 65 yr old. My styles of music range from classical, jazz, rock, blues and contemporary. At this point I'm enjoying playing and singing in my church choir and worship team as well as teaching my two kids the joys of music. I hope you truly enjoy the joy of learning music whether it be through me or another teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher I require all students to set time aside to practice. For without it, it is only wasting your time, your money and my time. I don't expect a total dedication to it but I do want to see some effort put into it. A little practice can go a long way and the more you do it, the faster you will progress and the more you will enjoy it. We will first start off with what you want out of music and the level you are at and go from there. Student can bring their own music either thru tabs, music sheet or just by ear but one thing I do expect is a student to learn how to read music notation. We will go thru the regular warm up exercises, material practiced during the week and any new music for the following week. Correct techniques in how to hold your instrument or voice procedures will be addressed. Music theory will also be part of the lesson as well as ear training. At the end of either 3 to 6 months you will have learned the basics of music and will be playing songs for you or someone else to enjoy. I will make it a total relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere but some dedication has to put on the students' part.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Dedicated music room, guitar both classical and electric, piano, cello, upright bass and electric bass guitar

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument. I can also provide music stand, small amplifier if needed and music material for the first few lesson until student provides for him/her self. Student must have own instrument.

*** Specialties ***
My way of teaching would have to be that they must learn how to read music while learning how to play an instrument.

Each lesson is designed on the level of the student's ability from beginner to advanced. Rock, R&B, funk, jazz, blues, POP and country music. I like to use song learning as a vehicle to sharpen your skills. Learning skills through songs is more fun for beginners. More advanced students will work on everything from theory, reading, harmony; and how you can use scales and arpeggios in a number of ways over several different styles of music.

About Stephen
I've teaching and performing professionally for 18 years.
I've studied with some of the top teachers in California:
- Jim Fagen (classical guitar)
- Erik Halbig (rock, jazz & country)

Emo has been an excellent teacher who taught me not only vocal techniques and exercises (which boosted the range and fullness of my voice), but also various aspects of music production and performance, such as mixing songs in Logic and using a vocal processor when performing. Picking up the acoustic guitar for the first time? Or pick up the acoustic guitar for the first time...in a long time? No problem, let's get you stringed up and back into the game. Each lesson is simple and effective, guaranteed to get your fingers in shape and able to reach those frets you had never reached before--sounds a little bit like the intro narrative to Star Trek...?

About Ben
EDUCATION

I graduated from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) with a B.A. in Public Administration (what does that have to do with the Flamenco guitar?); prior to that degree, I received an A.A. in Political Science (again, what does that have to do with Flamenco guitar?). Currently I am in the process of completing my M.P.A. at CSUF (again…?). The answer to the aforementioned question is that, I enjoy politics and government work—it’s my profession. Nonetheless, I enjoy Flamenco most of all, and I want you to enjoy it too! ¡Vamonos!

EXPERIENCE

The guitar is a wonderful instrument, which I began playing at the age of six. I began my studies with the classical guitar for the first 15 years of playing; and for these past 15 years I have studied the flamenco guitar—playing various concerts, events, and giving professional
instruction.

My experience as a guitarist in Southern California has led me to explore different genres of music, playing for various musical groups ranging from surf rock, concert band, and jazz. As a co-founding member of the band, Ballistico, we opened up for acts such as Dick Dale and the Del Tones, the Grandmothers of Invention (featuring members of Frank Zappa’s original band, “Mothers of Invention”), Avenged Sevenfold, and many others.

EXPERTISE

Having received first hand instruction from the some of the most sough-after professional Flamenco guitarists living and working in Spain (and touring internationally), I offer each of my students an unrivaled degree of authenticity in technique, tone, and style.

LEARNING MATERIALS

Each lesson includes tablature and audio recordings of the material that we will have gone over together. It is completely normal that only a day or two after a lesson—or even a few hours afterwards—the mind can (and will) quickly forget the material. Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. By having the accompanying written and audio material with you after each lesson, you will be well-prepared for a successful next lesson!
