The Guitar Scene in Riverside

By Taylor P. - Riverside Guitar Teacher

Learning to play and perform the guitar can be a fun and challenging experience. TakeLessons has qualified music instructors in the Riverside area who can assist students in their quest for musical growth. Whether you are interested in playing in the comfort of your home or performing on stage, teachers continue to help and inspire students to develop their talents from proper technique of the instrument to stage presence.

For the student who is interested in taking guitar lessons in Riverside with the performance aspect in mind, Riverside has many places and various hot spots for local musicians to get involved and become an active part of the music community. Local Coffee houses such as Jazz-n-Java, Back to the Grind and Borders host weekly open mic nights for musicians of all styles and skill levels to perform. Local restaurants and bars such as The Plum House, Lake Alice and Romano’s also host open mic nights and feature local bands on various nights.

Downtown Riverside hosts a monthly Art Walk on the first Thursday of every month. This event is open to the public and an excellent place to see and meet local musicians. The Riverside Plaza is another place to enjoy local music from genres ranging from Rock to Jazz, Blues and Swing. Schedules and lineups are available online as well as in the Inland Empire Weekly, a local paper specializing in the local music and art scene.

Riverside is also home to the historical Fox Performing Arts Center, which features performances by a wide variety of well known and respected music artists. Another favorite amongst guitarists is Wild West Guitars and the exclusive Voodoo Lounge. Featuring big names in the guitar community and a collection of prized instruments, these sites are a must see for any aspiring guitarist. The Fender Museum (just outside of Riverside) is also a fascinating place for a guitarist to visit as well as to see big names perform.

As a teacher and performer, I always stress the importance of attending concerts and seeing local artists play to my students who are taking guitar lessons in Riverside. It’s a way of learning through others, getting perspective, and becoming inspired. I enjoy hearing my students talk about how a certain musician inspired them after seeing a performance. Being involved in the music community is beneficial to all music students who are taking guitar lessons in Riverside. Networking and meeting with other musicians is how ideas can develop and grow.

I've been teaching guitar for over four years. I've previously been a part of two bands during my formative years and recently have been a session guitar player for four upcoming indie rock, alternative, and R&B/Soul albums.
For children and beginners, I use the Mel Bay publication Children's Guitar Chord Book as well as Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series. I also apply basic music theory that includes learning the Circle of Fifths and basic reading of sheet music.

For intermediate guitar players, I utilize the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series to teach Power Chord Formation and Delivery, Fingerpicking, Pentatonic Scales, Reading Tabulature, and tackling some of classic rock and jazz's favorite tunes.

For guitar lessons at my studio, I leverage Guitar Pro to project and display tabs and play-alongs with ease. For in-home lessons, I use the software for select lessons as we begin song selection and play-alongs.

I can't wait to rock out with you as you find your inner ...

About Milton
Hey there, everyone!

My name is Milton Carl Jackson II and I teach vocal, guitar, piano, and musical theatre lessons in the Inland Empire area.

I help those young, middle-aged, and not-as-young tap into their own soul through music so that they may help others find theirs as well. I believe that in order to entertain others with your voice or your instrument, one must first be able to entertain oneself - all the while having fun doing it! As a recent graduate of the University of California, Davis with a double major in Music History & Ethnomusicology and African-American & African Studies; a former co-host of the popular hip-hop radio show ATF Radio: All Things Fresh on KDVS 90.3 FM; a former Music Director of The Afterglow of UC Davis; and a recent graduate of American University with a Master's of Education in Business Education
, I have come in contact and learned from a vast amount of different musicians and educators. A classically-trained bass-baritone with roots in R&B, Soul, Rock, Pop, and Jazz, I have aspirations to help each and every student realize their full musical potential.

If you're looking for a teacher who will motivate and inspire you not only to learn your instrument of choice, but also how to perform it (whether on the big stage or in your living room for the family) and record it as well, I'm the perfect teacher for you. Learning to sing, play, and act beautifully doesn't have to be difficult -- we'll work on finding your voice or your style, all while having fun along the way!

I teach in-studio, in-home, and online lessons, so we can be flexible with the lesson type and schedule!

This is a perfect chance for you or your child who can't stop singing around the house or has dreams of shredding on the guitar or twinkling on the ivories to learn the fundamentals of music, start something new that keeps them or you focused, and have fun while doing it!

Feel free to contact me at show contact info for any questions and check out my student reviews and qualifications.

I look forward to meeting you and accompanying you or your child on your musical journey!!

About Richard
I have studied, performed and taught music for over 30 years. Accordion was my first instrument at age 7 which was a great introduction to the keyboard, melody and harmony. That was followed by guitar and other stringed instruments (Banjo, Ukulele) as well as drums. I studied with great teachers in the past as well as at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I have also performed at the Cape Cod Jazz Festival, The Bakersfield Jazz Festival and numerous club dates and private functions throughout New York, New England and California.

The guitar is a popular musical instrument classified as a string instrument with anywhere from 4 to 18 strings, usually having 6. The sound is projected either acoustically or through electrical amplification (for an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, respectively). It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the right hand while fretting (or pressing against the fret) the strings with the left hand. The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either gut, nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.

There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar.

About George
I am so glad you’re here!

The music lessons for young children are full of fun, interactive activities with iPads apps and traditional methods that not only help develop a strong musical foundation and build essential life skills, but offer a unique bonding experience for you and your child.

Discover for yourself why families love my innovative music lessons for kids.

YES! Music Matters!

The curriculum is built on research that proves MUSIC MATTERS. Music affects virtually every aspect of development and when young children are consistently engaged by music during the “musical window” they benefit at many levels.

What about private lessons?

Do I believe in private lessons? You bet! But I know from experience that private lessons are most valuable for older kids who have the ability to concentrate in a one-to-one setti
ng.

With this Private setting you will have a solid foundation in keyboard skills and music theory and typically excel quickly in their continued music education and when learning other instruments. The education and experiences a child has in my music program sets them up for success with private instruction.

Music Program

Builds spatial-temporal reasoning skills critical for greater success in math and science studies.

Music students out-perform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math.

Music students receive more academic honors and awards than non-music students.

Develops social and emotional skills including the ability to relate to others and better express ideas, and less likely to have behavior/discipline problems.

I offer up to 2 recitals a year so that you can perform everything you know.

Feel free to reach out and let's setup some lessons.

Thank you, George F.

George, was very patient, kind, and seem very knowledgeable. He seems to understand the pedagogy of teaching to kids and realize they all learn differently. I personally think he went above and beyond for my Son first class and for our first introduction. He offered a more modern approach method of teaching music and Piano to my son who so far seem more receptive in learning and practicing. Will se where that take us but I am very please so far.

Each lesson is designed on the level of the student's ability from beginner to advanced. Rock, R&B, funk, jazz, blues, POP and country music. I like to use song learning as a vehicle to sharpen your skills. Learning skills through songs is more fun for beginners. More advanced students will work on everything from theory, reading, harmony; and how you can use scales and arpeggios in a number of ways over several different styles of music.

About Stephen
~ Customized Lesson Plan for You. ~

Learning the guitar is a fun, yet, challenging experience. Having an instructor guide you through the process makes learning easier and more efficient. The internet provides a wealth of information but can not interact with you and help your specific needs. Many guitar players get frustrated and give up. Getting the encouragement and expertise of an instructor who has been there before greatly enhances chances of success.

My style of teaching is founded on fun with the instrument and guiding students to real music situations. Many students come to me with an incomplete set of skills. These (self taught) players have several basic fundamental holes in their playing.

It is also important to me that students have a basic knowledge of music theory. This way, they can enjoy the guitar for th
e rest of their life. If you just learn to put your hands in a certain place to play a certain song, you are missing out. If you learn what it is your actually doing, you can apply it. This may be the most important benefit of a private instructor.

What You Will Learn:

Beginning Students:
In my experience, over several years, I find most beginners are surprised the guitar is so hard to play. Having an instructor to help you past that frustration will lead to a lifelong enjoyment of your guitar in the songs you love.
- Learning the basic chords.
- How to move from chord to chord smoothly.
- Using these chords to play your favorite songs.
- Understanding guitar notation (tabs, chord grids, song books, standard notation).
This way, the skills you learn will last a life time!

Intermediate/ Advanced Students:
This is for the hungry players. You will be given the direction to achieve a high level of musicianship. You will be challenged to reach your full potential.
- Technique drills
- Scale knowledge
- Advanced chords
- Improvisation tips
- Chop Building
- Theory
- Reading
- Composition

Experience & Background:

I've teaching and performing professionally for 23 years.
- One year OCHSA jazz combo.
- 15 years performing music clubs, casuals as a solo performer and in a jazz trio.
- 23 years teaching individuals and groups.
- 11 years as Irvine and Laguna YAMAHA Music school instructor.

I've studied with some of the top teachers in California:
- Jim Fagen (classical guitar)
- Erik Halbig (rock, jazz & country)
- Jim Witzel (head of jazz guitar at CSUSF)
- Ron Eshcete (jazz guitar)
- Carl Verheyen (everything).

Stephen is a brilliant and experienced guitar instructor. My wife signed me up the electric guitar lesson with Stephen after my retirement about a year ago. I told him that I had no music background and just wanted to be able to play the 70’s songs I like. The lesson plan is based on my level and my goal. I started the fundamentals and now I can play most my favorite 70’s songs. I enjoy every lesson with him. What I learn in one hour class can fill out the rest of the week. Thank you for making my retired life so meaningful. “It’s never too old to play guitar! “ I would highly recommend Stephen to anyone who wants to learn to play the guitar!

I picked up the guitar very shortly after I began learning drums. Originally self-taught, I reached a level of proficiency in high school which allowed me to successfully audition for the Jazz Ensemble, and subsequently perform in the Jazz Big Band at Cal Poly Pomona.

My understanding of theory and songwriting will help us get to a place where you not only know which chords/notes to play, but also know why those chords may have been chosen by the songwriter in the first place!

Both acoustic and electric guitar interests can be accommodated!

About Brayden
I began my musical journey at the age of 7, when I received my first drum kit and was enrolled in drum lessons by my parents. Though they themselves were not musicians, they were supportive of my interest and eventual obsession with music from the very beginning, which is something I will always be thankful for.

As you may have guessed, I continued to make music and even went on to learn more instruments, including the guitar, bass, piano, and vocals. I didn't know it at the time, but learning all these instruments and understanding how they interact with one another in a band setting was ultimately setting me up to become a proficient musical arranger and songwriter.

During my college years, I was frontman for a band called 'The Skariginals,' which was a family-friendly ska band that ended up being the outlet for a lot of my son
gwriting efforts. In 2014, we were lucky enough to make it on the Vans Warped Tour and play for crowds of thousands of people.

In 2016, I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a B.A. in Music Industry Studies, a program which not only emphasized an understanding of recording technology and the music business, but also focused highly on promoting musicianship and music theory comprehension.

Following graduation, I have continued to work in live audio, namely as Audio Visual Coordinator of Associated Students Inc. at Cal Poly Pomona. In this position, I supervise a team of 6 student audio visual technicians, which has allowed me to realize my potential as a mentor and educator as I help to develop my student's skills in audio and visual technology.

I am looking forward to prospect of dedicating more of my time toward helping others begin or continue their own musical journeys. I can proficiently teach drums, guitar, and bass (though we may use the piano to discuss music theory).
I have all the necessary gear to teach these instruments in my home, so in some cases you may not even need to bring anything to your lesson! I am also open to commuting to your own home if this is more comfortable for you or your child.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my profile, and I hope you will consider taking your next drum, guitar, or bass lesson with me!
