I also teach beginning piano for children and adults, either seperately, or in tandem with voice lessons. If you are looking to advance your musicality while studying voice, or to introduce your child to both beginning piano and voice, I highly recommend this approach. I customize lessons to accommodate the age and ability of the student, and teach the basics of piano technique, reading music and other aspects of beginning music theory.

About Wendy P.

I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003, and opened my own studio in 2008. I love helping people find their true, authentic voice, which I feel is essential not only for singers but many other people as well! Singing is a great joy, and the voice is one of our primary modes of expression. Vocal work with the right guide can be a fulfilling and healing experience.
My background is as a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singers to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, as well as other venues. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater, and many more.

*** Lesson Details ***
Originally trained as a classical singer, I have since done a number of other studies to enhance the scope of my instruction. My training in training in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method, has enriched my understanding of the mechanics and health of the voice, as well as applications of technique to CCM or contemporary musical styles of singing. I am excellent at diagnosing vocal troubles and imbalances as well as bringing out the best in singers with grounded technique. We will address all aspects of singing technique, from breath management to improving tone, range, flexibility and resonance and power.
My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

Before my first lesson, I was nervous having no singing experience and not knowing what to expect from lessons.

Wendy, helped me relax and move forward in the process of learning to sing. I also appreciated how she kept me on topic and focused on the task at hand.

My first impression is that she is an intelligent professional and I look forward to my next lesson.

Working with Wendy was an immense pleasure. I've had various voice instructors and music teachers over the years and she was the first who was able to explain things in a way that I could understand. I had a lot of personal breakthroughs regarding registers and my vocal habits, and I found some new favorite warmups! My voice felt the most versatile it ever has whilst under her instruction. She was also very helpful and willing to work with me and my wacky schedule. In addition she's just very kind and lot of fun to work with. I would not hesitate to work with her again.

I met Wendy Parman when she was the lead in a musical comedy, and I had a small supporting role. I began taking lessons with Wendy at the end of the play's run. I greatly appreciate how Wendy individualizes lessons to meet my needs. She is able to hone in on my specific vocal challenges, and has given me strategies and exercises to work on at home. In addition she has helped me choose audition songs and prepare me for those auditions. Her Singer's Salon provides a safe and nurturing space in which to perform in front of an audience comprised of aspiring singers of all ages and experience levels. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Wendy is a talented performer who understands what it takes to audition, play a role, and entertain a live audience or in front of the camera.

Wendy has been giving voice lessons to my 12-year-old daughter for 6 months, so I asked her what kind of review she should get. The answer was quick: "Five stars!" Why? "Because she's fun, and she has helped me identify and work on the skills I need, and helped me improve where I'm okay, but could be better."

From my point of view, Wendy has done all those things. My daughter loves to sing, and Wendy is increasing her skills and her confidence. She looks forward to her weekly lessons; never a complaint. Five stars.

Professional, Effective, and Challenging Lessons

Wendy is probably the most professional and talented voice teacher I have worked with in my time singing. She was able to quickly diagnose and help me begin to address difficulties I was having, but was also very proactive in helping me find repetoire that I enjoyed and that meshed well with my voice and my musical interests. She is extremely knowledgeable about the mechanics of singing, as well as the interpretation of song, and really challenged me to think through my singing in a way I hadn't before. Thanks!

I strongly recommend Ms. Parman for those looking to enjoy the process while making real gains.

Having taken both group and private lessons with Wendy Parman, I believe that Ms. Parman is an invaluable voice coach to casual and professional singers alike. She knows how to bring out the talent in her clients, and will helps bring out the best in each student through very personalized instruction. Along with a degree in music and vast performing experience, she brings sensitivity towards her clients as she individuates each lesson.

Through the lessons and workshops with Ms. Parman, I have seen a great improvement in my singing voice, the deepening of greater stage presence with ease, and I have grown in my confidence as a singer. She quickly got to know my vocal range and ability and handpicked songs and exercises that helped me develop. I got expert advice on expanding my vocal range and left each lesson with solid techniques I could use to practice on my own. She challenged me to push through what was in my way and I got results.

As her student, I have performing opportunities as she organized two events per month in a casual, supportive yet professional setting. (Singer’s Salon & Singer’s Spotlight) How else can you practice before a live audience and stretch in this area?!

I found her to be flexible with days and times for our lessons, as my schedule changes from month to month. And thankfully, she was willing to travel to my house or at other times we met in her studio.

I strongly recommend Ms. Parman for those looking to enjoy the process while making real gains!!

Teacher with great humor teaches technique and interpretation.

After a long hiatus from singing, I began taking lessons with Wendy. I thank my lucky stars that this occurred. Wendy is not only a consummate professional, uber-talented and a thoroughly knowledgeable and dynamic teacher; she is also compassionate and caring, with a keen understanding of the many issues surrounding study of the arts and performance.

Wendy is a teacher who invokes trust from a student as she, 'knows the score;' the musical score, and life's score, both big contributors to the development of the voice itself. Wendy is a gifted individual who works with students to improve, enhance, and enjoy artistic abilities already in place, and those yet to be discovered!

Excellent teacher

I'm a professional singer and I know the importance of maintaining my "instrument" I take lessons with Wendy to help keep my voice healthy and to get honest feedback on performance skills. She is excellent in communicating technical information and is always spot on in in recognizing issues and problem areas. She has a way of identifying and correcting things in a kind and supportive way.
I take private lessons and I also enjoy her student workshops. Wendy provides a safe and open environment for singers to work on material, performance ability and vocal skills. I always have fun, learn something new, make new friends and all at a reasonable price! Whether you are a beginner or a professional you will enjoy the time spent with Wendy and you will walk out the door a better singer and performer than when you walked in!

You will improve and you'll have a great time doing it

I've been both a voice student and musical colleague of Wendy's for four years. Throughout our mutual experiences and projects, her warmth and integrity have led me to trust her without reservations.

As a student, she quickly identified root-cause problem areas with my singing and prescribed easy exercises that showed results in very short order. Her teaching style is holistic, addressing both physical and psychological aspects of singing and performance.

As a colleague in a band and numerous musical projects, I've found her to be consistently reliable and caring, as well as a supremely talented performer and songwriter.

If you care about improving your vocal and performance abilities, and want to work with someone who appreciates your unique nature as a person and singer, Wendy is the vocal instructor for you.

Private Company

This is a group I started to help singers move from classes and workshops to actual performance. We meet for workshops to improve singing and performance, and perform once monthly in a supportive but professional setting to work out nerves and other performance issues. I created a singer's spotlight to showcase more advanced singers once a month as well. It's great fun, and we learn bunches!
